- This is a collection of historical Roller Derby photos from the 1960, 1970 and 1980 series. Many of the photos are from the San Francisco Bay Area Bombers featuring Charlie Oconnell, Joan Weston, Carol Meyer, Tony Roman, Cliff Butler, Delores Tucker, Francine Cochu and Larry Smith. While the Bay Bombers held games at Kezar Pavilion with skaters such as the Fiery Unpredictable Ann Calvello, Sandy Dunn, Jan Vallow, Rosetta Saunders, Pete Boyd, Cathy Read, Mike Gammon, Judy Mcquire, Ken Monte, Bill Groll, Bob Woodberry, Ronnie Robinson, Gil Orazco, Lydia Clay, Jay Jay Burton, Margie Laszlo, Jerry Cattell, Bob Hein Nick Scopas, Lou Donovan and others they sure sold out many national arenas as well.
Thank you. Brings back lots of memories. My wife even tried out for the Bombers and she make it but decided at the last moment not to suit up. At mid '30s she was looking for a career change and went into IT. I always wanted a Derby Queen so I got mine. I called her the Thrilla from Manila. Every Friday night was date nite at the games in Oakland, Richmond, San Jose and Kezar Pavilion. At least she got to training camp and got into the penalty box and flipped the bird. She could have been skating with Weston (38), Meyers (37) and actually knew Doris Tucker (34) as day-time co-workers and worst "just joking" Anne Cavello. Still have some photos of Jensen and Gammon when he was a kid..
Joan Weston and Charlie O'Connell and peanuts Meyer and Tony roman were the best players in roller derby
Great Job!!!!! Thank You for the Memories!!
I used to work at the Broadway Department Store in Los Angeles, and on my first day I met Margie Laszlo, who by then had long ago hung up her skates and was working in the furniture department. What a thrill!!
used to love the skate battle between Mike Gammon and Tony Roman..battle of the best on the track..didnt care for roller games..loved the roller derby..really cool to see this..
Make that 2 of us. While Games had many talented Skaters didn't like their circus like performance. Wasn't needed with that type of talent which was wasted on a soap opera WWE type of show! At least Roller Derby has some semblance to a sport!
Two of the Best
Maybe you remember my mother Gladys sneath 27 cheifs 1950 Cuba 1952champs. She's 92,and doing very well.im her caretaker .I never knew anything about her career in roller derby till recently. It is awesome to explore..Goodnight
I go back to the days of Ronnie Robinson, Joan Weston and my favorite short, fat guy, Gill Orosco
RONNIE ROBINSON was Sugar Ray's son. Thumper Woodberry, The bald eagle , Bob Hein. Pro wrestling on skates.
Yes that is my Aunt Valerie Blackard number 31 at 6:24! What a great pic! Thanks for sharing. Sorry it took so long for me to respond.
Thanks for sharing!
Haha!@RollerDerbyStars I did see my Aunt Valerie. She's about 6:19 #31 but I didn't see her yearbook pic. I love that picture. I have to find a print of that so I can frame it for her. Thanks for sharing!
did the LA t-birds ever skate against the LA Bombers??
Yes, but they were in different leagues. The LA T BIrds were in the International Skating League and the Bombers were in the National Skating League. Two different leagues owned by 2 different entities. The National League was owned by Jerry Seltzer. I don't know who owned the ISL as I lived in the SF Bay Area and was a fan of the Bombers.
anyone got their game posted on youtube?, i'd love to see the Bombers vs the T-birds, also Margie Lazlo, Ann Calvello & Joan Weston was hell on wheels
Never heard of the LA Bombers. LA Braves perhaps. San Francisco Bay Bombers of the Seltzer era International Roller Derby League. Los Angeles Thunderbirds of the Roller Games National Skating Derby or often referred to as "National Roller League" as well.
Jennifer, the only interleague game that there is film of is Pioneers vs. Riley's Renegades. That's on RUclips.
Growing up in the late 60's, first "celebrity" crush....Joanie Weston.
Mine Ann Calvello
Charlie was the best
Mike Gammon and Judi McGuire????
Little Richard Brown was my Favorite
Does anybody by chance have a tape of the Midwest Pioneers game at Comisky Park in October 1972 against the Los Angeles thunderbirds
Unless home produced the game you are referring to was never televised other then a few clips for promotion.
Unfortunately nobody filmed it. All there are is a couple of pictures.
Do you have any photos of the Texas Outlaws during 1969 and 1970. I skated with them in Los Angeles, Ca and I can not find my pictures. I skated under Cheryl Chapman. Thank you for any help you can give me
Joseph Chiapella, I know this is years after you're request but I just saw it. There is a site..LA Thunderbird Team History. It has pics of all the Tbird teams over the years and other team photos too. You might find something there. Go to www.latbirds.net or Google the name above.
How about Mike Gammon?
Gammon became a Bomber in the '80s. Always love Gammon even before he was a Bomber.
