Thank you! Scored me 2 sapote trees because of your channel, and they really do cope well here in Auckland NZ. Never heard of them until I saw your channel - very informative and inspiring!
I'm happy to inspire and help! Enjoy!
I'm from Sabah, Malaysia And I have almost all of you exotic fruit collection..
Lucky you! It's a real struggle to grow them in my colder climate.
@@RealLifeFruitopia only for giant black sapote... It's so hard to grow it here... No one knows about the black sapote.. btw thanks for ur explanation on ur video
love your garden.....great variety of sapotes + fruit trees that I also grow.
Thanks for visiting
Beautiful tree's.. 👍 👌 ♥
Thank you!
Great run through of all of your sapote type plants thanks George, a great collection now 🤩
Thanks Brett 👍 A long wait still ahead on the more sensitive ones.
Amazing👍🌱
Thanks for visiting
Beautiful garden!
Thank you!
Fantastic selection & vid as usual. Approximately how far apart do you plant your trees I'd love to set up my small garden like yours to maximize the space.

@@RealLifeFruitopia oh Gosh thank you thank you
You forget to mention Abiu because it's a Sapote & you have it in your green house, maybe Star-Apple also related to Abiu & Sapote . thank for sharing this content.
Good point!
The scales are carried up the tree by ants. I got a sticky tap from the gardening section and tied it around my citrus tree and picked out as much scales as I can. Problem solved! Thank u for ur inspiring videos
Thanks for the info!
Great tour 👏 my Mamey is growing extremely well in Sydney too! I think they are a lot more cold tolerant than we think!
Yes they are!
Nice sapote tour George
I have at least 6 white sapote now and planning to see how one goes this year outside and rest the year after. I’m sure I’ll still need to frost protect for first couple of winters just like I would have to for ay citrus here
Well worth growing, they are the best tasting tropical fruit that doesn't mind the cold. Good luck Neil.
Speaking on the Mamey Sapote, I planted a seed back in June in the Bay Area, CA and I have it growing right now in winter. I have been leaving it out in my backyard in its 1 gallon pot for all of winter (except 1 day where it went down to 31 degrees F) and it is shockingly my only tropical seedling without any sort of cold damage. I was told it is extremely sensitive, but it has been regularly been facing temps around 36-40 degrees at night with no damage, and pushing growth. My litchi, jackfruit, mango, and Ross Sapote seedlings are showing some cold stress, but not this guy. I’m really shocked.
I'm surprised about Mamey too, almost want to plant it out but not worth the risk. I have two small seedlings that I will experiment with when they get larger.
The cold sensitivity affects the fruit the most I believe, since it takes so long for the fruit to mature it increases the odds you’ll have cold enough weather to causa the fruit to drop.
Great video. Would be interesting if you could also make a video on when did you start growing tropical fruit, what motivated you & what was the very first tropical tree you planted.
Thank you 👍🌺
Great suggestion. I have talked about this in a past video, but I'll be happy to redo it.
Cool video! I was looking for a video on chico sapote and bob's your uncle. Which sapote's flavor do you like best? I would like to see a review on which Annona grows or tastes best. I'm wanting something kids will like the taste. I'm looking at annona, sapote, or maybe longan. I have recently planted a younghans white sapote. Thanks for the video.
Being a fruit lover, I like them all! Sapodilla and custard apple are my favourites from all that you mentioned.
@@RealLifeFruitopia Awesome! Thank you for sharing your preference! I think preferences can change depending on the fruit quality the tree wants to produce. Sometimes when I have a perfectly ripe fruit of no particular kind I sometimes think its the best until I taste another perfectly ripe fruit. I can relate to your sentiments. Cheers!
I would like to request a full avocado 🥑 update 😀🥑😋
Great video. Really makes me want a sapodilla
Noted!
Lovely collection of Sapote!
Thanks!
great video. Did you get many black sapote to harvest the last few years?
Only one fruit. The oldest tree shown in the video was set back by 3 years when it died then resprouted.
Great video. I thought that canistel would be more cold hardy than Rollinia. I’m surprised! I may just give mine one more year in the greenhouse then! Agree, sapodilla is painfully slow. I’m really looking forward to getting a green sapote when by they are available again. I have planted a seed but hasn’t germinated yet.
They are close in cold tolerance, safer to protect either way. If I had left the frost cloth on another month the canistel would be alive today. Lots to learn.
Great 👍👍👍
Thanks for the visit
Thanks for sharing! I have two black sapote trees inspired by your channel! How many black sapote do you get from your bigger trees typically? I'm trying to figure out the production so I know how many trees I'll need. Thanks!
Only one fruit. The oldest tree shown in the video was set back by 3 years when it died then resprouted. It seems this year will be productive, at least I hope so. For personal consumption, I would aim for 2 or 3 trees. I'm also looking at different varieties for taste and size.
@@RealLifeFruitopia thanks for the reply. I hope you have a productive crop this year. These are tasty fruits, so maybe I'll have to go with 3 trees to also have a mix variety. Love the videos!
We moved to the yucatan mexico two years ago. Never heard of sapotes. There is an abandoned lot across from us with a 60ft tall mamey and a big Chico. Two of the best tasting fruits I've ever had in my life. If u can grow these, grow them!
Lucky you!
You should replace the dead canistel with another one, if it made it through 4 months of winter as a young tree, it could definitely grow and fruit in Melbourne with some protection in it’s early years. Yes you’re right, you pulled the frost cover very early for a non established tree. the tree was very stressed and the cold spring we had this season didn’t help either.
I'm not risking my two young grafted canistel in ground, instead I'm waiting for 2 seedlings to put on growth for a try next year.
Lady bugs will eat the black/brown scale.
You will need to place diatomaceous earth(after mixing with water) as a paint, on the trunk, to stop the ants though.
Regarding the insect on the leaves: Those are farmed by ants. If you get rid of the ants those will disappear. The best option would be to wrap the trunk in a protective duct tape in order to put a ring of sticky tanglefoot. This will stop ants from farming those pests on the leaves. Cheers.
Thanks for the heads up!
I got a grafted white sapote too. Its 15cm high and got flowers =D
But even in Germany it somehow always get scales but not as huge as the Australian variety at 1:30.
Bravo for growing WS in Germany!
Maybe you should buy a greenhouse heater. It might prevent any of your trees winter sensitive from dying. Just a thought.
I have a low powered heater in one of the greenhouses, where I keep the most sensitive trees in winter.
Great trees.
Those black scale are farmed by snts I believe.
The ants protect the scale in return for sugary nectar that the scale excretes!
I've heard putting vaseline on the trunk or a water ring around the base of the trunk stops the ants from climbing and then other insects can eat the scale
Vaseline might damage the bark. I tried spraying eco oil but they return, so I'm counting on natures way.
My canistel has been in ground (Adelaide) for two years. Wasn't doing well for two years but finally picking up.
Well done!
Thanks George great content!
My pleasure!
They all look great! What's your favorite tasting one?
My favourite sapote is sapodilla which is yet to fruit.
Those black bugs are scale you should remove it can damage or kill your tree
If you have any ilama trees, you can include them in your "sapote" collection. I need ilama, black and green.
Unfortunately I don't!
Any updates on the Chupa Chupa?
Went to heaven
:(
my white sapote survived -5c (23f). oh it wasn't happy about it, but it's bounced back and is super bushey
Good to hear
Those “black spots” are called scale 👍
Thanks, I often have brain farts when filming :)
You probably already know but sapoti in Spanish means soft fruit
Yes
Which is your favourite
Sapodilla
