How did the boots with the half soles hold up? I just picked up a pair of 1000miles on sale at a local store for $140 ! I don't see how the leather sole will last even a hundred miles as I have put significant wear on it in just 2 days (I'm half way through to the welt at the toe already). Im debating getting a half sole put on, just wearing them as is and getting them resoled in 6months or getting them resoled right now with vibram mini lugs as I got the boots for such a good deal.

Agreed based on longevity. I found a pair of 1,000 mile at a Nordstrom rack, and although the boot might have been a factory second (most likely), the sole had a rubber addition that started to come loose not long after breaking them in. Red Wings tend to last longer, and the lower price makes a huge difference when buying new.
Hey, thank you so much for the indepth review. Love both those boots , I probably would have picked the Blacksmith too for the same reason you chose them over the 1000 miles. I appreciate your opinion and definitely would take your opinion seriously if I was to buy another pair of boots. Cheers

But, especially after Rose Anvil cut them both in half, it is really disappointing to see how much lower quality materials they use, and i also have seen a lot more photos of the 1000 Mile boots after some time, and it doesnt look like they age as gracefully, partly due to the leather clicking at the factory (hope you like wrinkly, loose fiber leather). I like some wrinkles, but the 1000 Mile boots just look a bit too wrinkly for my taste. I love my Iron Rangers a lot, and i honestly can't wait for the sole to wear out so i can replace it and have a cobbler at an actual full leather midsole.
I have them both and love them both. The 1000s are better for casual office work wear, and the Blacksmiths are better for weekend wear. Just MHO. Cheers.
One of the first things I did with my Wolverine 1000 miles was put on some rubber half soles for the extra grip....problem solved and it also serves to protect the original leather sole from needing a replacement.
Another really good video...!!! Very similar boots but the sole better on the Red Wing, which makes that boot more versatile...! Love the 1000 mile but you are right on about the comparison! GG...IN
Why does everyone forget about the 1000 Mile Evans? Better than than the Red Wing, not sure why anyone even buys the full leather sole 1000 Miles at all when the Evans is only $15 more and way, way better.
Nice review. Here's a question that I don't know if you will be able to address in the future... Being that you prefer the RW over the 1K due strictly to the sole, what about the 1K Evans or the 1K Cap Toe? I have the RW Blacksmith 3340 (Briar Oil Slick Leather) and the 1K Cap Toe. I am very hard pressed which I prefer.
Hi there, I really enjoy your videos. I have a question and it may be a long shot but do you happen to know if the colour on the Wolverine 1000 mile brown boots (which is brown with a bit of a red hue) is basically the same as the Red Wing Blacksmith boots #3340? I have the wolverine 1000 mile in brown and oxblood already, was thinking of getting the Red Wing blacksmith 3340 but won't bother if the colour is 90%+the same as the wolverine 1000 in brown
First off, thank you so much for watching and subscribing---I really appreciate it. As for your question: are you talking about the Cordovan #8 color I'm showing in my video, or the standard Wolverine 1000 mile color? If you're tlaking about the color in my video, the 1000 mile is MUCH more red than the Blacksmith 3340. I love it. Hope that helps, but let me know if you're talkin about another boot
@@BootSpy Hello again, I have both pair/colours of the Wolverine 1000 mile, brown and cordovan (I believe it was called oxblood at the time I bought them approx 5-8 years ago) and I was wondering if you knew if the red wing blacksmith 3340 colour was closer to Wolverine brown or cordovan. It sounds like it may be closer to the brown but not sure. I'm looking to buy a pair of the blacksmith 3340 but can always tell colour shade on internet videos.
I hear you, but I gotta get what looks good in my wardrobe. You know how it goes---you gotta be stylin'! Thank you so much for watching---I really appreciate it.
Bought some blacksmiths in rough and tough leather for work but they are so pretty and fit so nice after break in that I'm having a hard time trashing them around. Full size down here some boot expander on left foot a few times the first two or three weeks and ready to go. Iron rangers will take the beating.
I prefer leather soles on the 1000 mile for 2 reasons. 1, leather soles are always far more comfortable than rubber soles. You get a thicker leather footbed with a leather sole. 2nd, with a leather sole, you simply have your cobbler put on sole savers for $30 and this will prove more superior longevity wise than a rubber sole. Let me explain; sole savers last about 2 years. When they wear out, for $30 you replace them. No wear whatsoever on your 1000 mile sole and no damage to the welt. Thus, a leather sole with sole savers will enable you to never have to resolve your boots and costs nearly nothing to have done every couple of years. Now, take a vibram sole or any rubber sole. It wears down within that same period to where the lugs no longer exist and so, you have to have them resolved. At your same 2 year cycle you’re replacing sole savers on your 1000 miles for $30, you’re spending $100 plus on your rubber soled Red Wings to resole. Additionally, every time you resole a Goodyear welt you’re shortening the life of the boot. You only have so many resoles and as you get into your 3rd or more resoles you’re likely replacing the welt which costs even more. I have several Iron Rangers and Wolverine BLVD boots with rubber soles and love them. There’s a place for rubber soles. But for me, I love the thicker leather footbed of the 1000 mile boots and the unlimited life of the leather soles with sole savers vs the much shorter life of a rubber sole on all of the Red Wings. $35 every two years with unlimited boot life vs $100 + with short boot life. My advice if you prefer Red Wings is to upon that first resole of your rubber soles, choose a leather sole with vibram sole savers. You’ll thank me and you’ll greatly then extend the life of your boots and you’ll get to enjoy a little boot strange transformation of them after wearing them for a couple of years with rubber soles.
@@matttherrien9608 I’ve had good luck with them walking on icy slick conditions in Denver. I’m using them as a casual dress boot so I’m not working hard labor in them but I do walk in them a couple or miles per day going from the bus to the office and back on work days and have been really pleased with them. Mine haven’t worn down enough to replace yet but when they do, I can simply have another set of sole savers applied and get another year or two of wear.
I love the sound logic behind your opinion. With the amount of where I put on my Iron Rangers this might be the only way to go! It won't mess with the silhouette too badly and it makes better financial sense.
To me the Blacksmith is a superior boot to the 1000 Mile. I've owned both and although I loved my 1000 Mile boots? You can tell the Blacksmiths are higher quality. And at a cheaper price to boot! Plus I love the bump toe of the Blacksmith. But the insides are where the Blacksmith sets it's self apart from the 1000 Mile. Not to mention I've always had loose grain issues with my 1000 Mile boots.
I would have to apologies to my cobbler when it comes to resoling the Wolverine. Those heals really suck from what I've been told and on top of that the build/quality control is really poor. The quality of Red Wing is just superior. That's just my take...
The thousand mile doesn't feel as good on my feet after wereing them after 12 hours as does the black smiths I wear the black smiths and iron rangers over 12 hours a day for work as a electrican
The more I look at them side by side, the more I like the more compact design of the Blacksmith. To be fair, I haven't had any QC issues with the Wolverine like I've heard of with other folks. Still, I agree with you
The sole is such a significant difference to me it renders the comparison pointless. I’d never buy a leather soled boot so it’s game over for the Wolverine from the get go.
I have em both for years and wear them a lot, in all kind of environment. The lether quality of the red wings is definitly better then the other. Wolverines get really wet in muddy or wet environment, you can see it, it's weird somehow. Looks just like bad quality. Also if the Wolverines are 1000 miles than Red Wings are at least 3000. But the Wolverines are more elegant, whereas the Red Wings are for the bad ass man and they're cheaper. I would not buy the Wolverines again, Red Wings - everytime. And not to forget - Red Wings break in nicer.
Late to the party I bought a pair of blacksmiths in briar oil I stand on concrete for 10-12 hours a day And despite what everyone says, my break in was ..brutal And very long Not blisters and blood, but pinching and getting extremely uncomfortable after my foot started to swell And I gotta be honest it took ...5-5 1/2 months But eventually it fully broke in. Like gloves for my feet as the old saying goes I really feel I earned these boots and this break in. But I absolutely adore them now
I find it amusing people with out callous on their hands with a manicure. Buy clothes and boots to look like a tradesman kinda sort of. Like the jeans bought with a hole in the knee. Or boots that are no longer practical for work because of the improvements made to these type of boots over the past 100 years. For the price of these they are driven by fad. There is nothing special about them. They are inferior in many ways to the comfert and durability of the more modern work boot.
Glad to see someone comapare the right boot with the 1000 mile instead of the Iron Ranger. Great job!
You got it! Thank you! (but we do have one comparing the blacksmith to the Iron Ranger if you're interested ;) )

Thank you for the information. Will certainly consider. As a cold-blooded Canadian, the Vibram grip is necessary. How are the Sole Savers grip?
Not to mention I've always had loose grain issues with my 1000 Mile boots.
nice jacket where did you get it?
this one's from Frank And Oak, though I think they discontinued the model last I looked
Hope your aware you can get a vibram sole on 1k miles
True that, but I just wanted to go with the classics. Thank you so much for watching---I really appreciate it.
Yes!! I love my blacksmith boots!!!
nice, me too!
The sole was the decider for me too.
Wolverine for me. I look at the leather sole as a PLUS for style reasons. Rubber soles are less classy.
I would have to apologies to my cobbler when it comes to resoling the Wolverine. Those heals really suck from what I've been told and on top of that the build/quality control is really poor. The quality of Red Wing is just superior. That's just my take...
I disagreed with the sole because redwing also have a rubber sole
My 1000 mile have the same sole as the redwings.
so, just the sole-wise, 1000mile with lug soles will win the competition.
I'd say I even prefer the Black Prairie but that's just me
Shank ??
Regarding leather, wolverine will crease very quickly and badly. I think red wing leather is better.
The thousand mile doesn't feel as good on my feet after wereing them after 12 hours as does the black smiths I wear the black smiths and iron rangers over 12 hours a day for work as a electrican
Red Wing all the way, the Wolverines look awesome but the quality is inferior compared to RW.
The more I look at them side by side, the more I like the more compact design of the Blacksmith. To be fair, I haven't had any QC issues with the Wolverine like I've heard of with other folks. Still, I agree with you
Redwings site has been down for purchases for a while, they must be losing so much money! D:
I know, I'm surprised it's been down for so long. I hope they're able to get it back up soon
The sole is such a significant difference to me it renders the comparison pointless. I’d never buy a leather soled boot so it’s game over for the Wolverine from the get go.
I like the aesthetic of Wolverine 1000. It has lower profile
But in term of durability, Red wing stands out
Totally fair! I feel the same
I have em both for years and wear them a lot, in all kind of environment.
Can you donate a pair of these beautiful boots
Wolverine 1000 mile with full vibram
Nice choice -- I was torn and thinking about getting that version, but ultimately went with the OG
Redwing Blacksmith 100%
Late to the party
I bought a pair of blacksmiths in briar oil
I stand on concrete for 10-12 hours a day
And despite what everyone says, my break in was ..brutal
And very long
Not blisters and blood, but pinching and getting extremely uncomfortable after my foot started to swell
And I gotta be honest it took ...5-5 1/2 months
But eventually it fully broke in. Like gloves for my feet as the old saying goes
I really feel I earned these boots and this break in. But I absolutely adore them now

Not sure why my comment went here ...but yeah lol
@@ryansmith7570 80 days on my Rangers and no longer any doubts about sizing. Buy them tight as hell and suck it up!
Work boots for guys who do not do any work.
Light work 😂
RW 🤟✌👍
Redwings are better made by far
Your room is dark. You need more lighting.
You look like Beto O’Rourke talks.
You definitely don't get invited to parties 😂😂
