I am definitely going to try this. I am in the market for a vigil lamp, which is a candle whose flame is ideally supposed to burn continually (religious applications - churches, chapels, to illuminate icons etc). Thank you for this!
Sorry to be so ignorant, but I'm trying to make this and it just burns up the wick so quickly, like within a minute the quick is burned up and I have to try to pull out more with a pin to keep it burning. I'm sure I musty be doing something wrong, any advice would be appreciated.
Call me stupid, but, apart from it being illegal to deface currency here in the UK ;) - I'm pretty sure a clean metal washer would be less hassle than drilling a hole in a coin? Most of us have random washers lying around our 'spare stuff' jars. Also I don't have clamps or a drill that would do that. so I'm going to try with a washer.
I've tried so many of these types of olive oil lamps but they've never worked for me using any kind of cotton 'wick' the only way I get them to work well is with cotton wool as a wick, seems to be the only type of wick the thick oil will travel up and burn. All the other types of wick just don't seem to be able to draw the oil up fast enough and burn down.
i've been trying to make one of these by making the wick myself. i twist cotton fluff into a thread and then twist it together into cord. but the problem i'm having is that the wick itself seems to be burning, so it doesn't last long. how can i fix this? what's wrong with the wick?
i use a jar with a lid, drill a hole through the lid and push the cotton wool through. No need to twist, the cotton wool works better when it's not twisted and compacted. When you drill through the lid leave any jagged edges alone as these will keep the wick in place
to be honest, there's not much if any smell to it while it's burning. Running bacon grease in it works well too and gives your house a faint faint faint hint o' bacon.
You could, though my aim was to have a very snug fitting wick so as not to risk burning the corks. If you had maybe a big fender washer with a small hole it should work just the same
Yeah I think it would, I was very focused though on a tight fit of wick through hole so that the flame is unlikely to burn down thru the hole and burn the cork. A fat fender washer w/ a small hole would work just dandy.
You gotta think more ghetto than that! Don't use a penny, flatten out a bottle cap with a hammer and punch a hole through with a nail. I make something similar, but I use a slightly larger piece of cork, and staples from a staple gun.
+Matt Cooper indeed you did! I had to make a version that was a bit more searchable as well as palatable to the non pork eating population of the world, also it's the thing I was initially trying to invent when I stumbled upon the bacon grease idea. Your keen attention to detail is commendable! I'm glad to have you as a viewer :)
im looking at so many videos of olive oil lamps because i want to make some here for when it gets to hot to use the oil lamps i got. thing is i cant find one modern olive oil lamp that you wont get oil on your hands adjusting it. therefore i might just make the old 3000 year old lamps from clay hmm.
According to federal laws, it's illegal to deface or tamper with any United States or foreign currency used in the United States. If the coin will never be used as currency again, then no fraudulent charges will be pressed and the coin will become worthless. For this reason, do not punch a hole through valuable coins.
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things Quran
This is by far the most practical video I've seen for a vigil lamp DIY. Thank you for sharing this with us!
Currently on day 3 of no power in Texas... This has been so helpful thank you!!
why use a penny when you can just use a washer?
Thank you, I have been searching for that hack since a long time
I am definitely going to try this. I am in the market for a vigil lamp, which is a candle whose flame is ideally supposed to burn continually (religious applications - churches, chapels, to illuminate icons etc). Thank you for this!
My pleasure Chris, It runs a long time on not much oil.
Thank you so much for showing folks how to drill through the penny safely.
Finally someone who understands that olive oil will only wick up a very short distance.
That was great! I'm getting into the survival mode....well, or if the power goes out.
This was so helpful, thank you. I am hoping to one day have traditional oil lamps that run on olive oil not kerosene
Could turn that into a little heater, with some terra-cotta pots over it.🌱
Does it have to be a penny or could it be a washer of some sorts?
That is a very elegant solution. Thank you!
thank you very much, it's something I've been trying to nail down for a long time
Thanks brilliant
Nice but why cork? And copper penny's are not really copper. Can a metal washer work or would it melt from the long heat?😮😊
The cork will catch fire after a while when the oil gets into it and it gets really hot. This doesn't work for long.
Seems I could wrap the cork float in a bit of used/leftover aluminum foil, saving the penny and the work to make it a holy penny. :-D
Thanks, really enjoyed
I believe that I know you. 🕯️
Thanks Cora!
Thank you. What a need lamp.
Does that estimated $.08 include the penny?
+Mark Maxwell shoot, I knew I forgot to account for something. I'll re-assess the total to be $.09.
+Zack Of All Trades Even still, hard to go wrong in the $.07 ~ $.09 range.
Off the grid idea. Thank you
Can you use Bacardi 151 instead?
thanks Zack- great idea
is there a benefit to the copper in the penny? or would a nickel/quarter work just as well?
What a centsable tutorial!
Thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoyed it 😁
"I believe you have my stapler."
😆
So funny. My nephew calls himself Zack of all trades lol
Very good yet what if one does not have a drill like me :( Great video :)
Sorry to be so ignorant, but I'm trying to make this and it just burns up the wick so quickly, like within a minute the quick is burned up and I have to try to pull out more with a pin to keep it burning. I'm sure I musty be doing something wrong, any advice would be appreciated.
olive oil can be very thick and doesn't travel well up many types of wick. The only type I have got to work is cotton wool
Did u notice that the glass will break if it floats too close to 1 side?
I thought this was gallagher by the thumbnail =p neat video
amazing trick, thx you from belgium mate

oh also, I have some cork dinner mats and cork coasters, so I think I can just cut some of that up instead of having to cut and staple a cork.
lol, yep I suppose you're right. As long as you had one with a small enough inside diameter.
yeah as long as you're no longer using those mats or coasters. The point of using wine corks is that they're essentially rubbish anyway.
Could you get this to work in a lantern because mine keeps going out?
Very clever!
Can I just use a washer instead of a penny? ?
Thank you so much, I did it and it is perfect.
Glad to hear it!

Also use olive oil, I've tried vegetable oils and they all seem to smoke
i've been trying to make one of these by making the wick myself. i twist cotton fluff into a thread and then twist it together into cord. but the problem i'm having is that the wick itself seems to be burning, so it doesn't last long. how can i fix this? what's wrong with the wick?
Ive seen cotton balls wrapped around toothpick or wooden kebab stick which seems to work. Ive not tried it myself though

Muy bueno el vídeo
My fire doesn’t last longer than 3 minutes tho. I like the. Design.
and it wont pollute your home like petroleum candles
i bet that candle smells very nice when burning
to be honest, there's not much if any smell to it while it's burning. Running bacon grease in it works well too and gives your house a faint faint faint hint o' bacon.
Cool
Couldn't you use a washer instead of drilling through a penny?

Thank you I am on it :)
Bravooo super👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
10/10!
Wuld a washer work just as well

great
Thank You!
Or just use a washer instead of messing with drilling a penny
Handsome
Use a roofing torch works faster 🤣👍
hmm I think I saw this recently. mmmm bacon.

Modern take on a Betty lamp....I like it.
Did the Vikings use this?
+Grassy20 you know, it's funny you mention it. If I were using fish oil or seal blubber it'd be really close to what they did use.

that old tech worked for a loooooong time :)
Isn't it illegal to destroy a penny?
yes t is i think this video is very immiture because it is infact illegal to destroy any type of money currency
According to federal laws, it's illegal to deface or tamper with any United States or foreign currency used in the United States. If the coin will never be used as currency again, then no fraudulent charges will be pressed and the coin will become worthless. For this reason, do not punch a hole through valuable coins.
To destroy a money piece is illegal.
Not when the money is worth less anyway!
