Making an Ice Barrel

  • So its time to think about cold water therapy for all those aches and pains from training, so I bought an old whisky/Wine Barrel to convert to an Ice Barrel for dipping.
    Anyone else do similar?

      @@colinoneil5050 I got mine from a reclamation yard in the Aberbeeg area, but there are loads of places that do them, I have found that in this recent heat wave has created gaps in the wood slats, so I will probably have to get some pool lining for the inside

      @@gingeral I think mine will live in the shade at the bottom of the garden (the only place the girlfriend will sign off on it living 😵‍💫)

      I used a jet washer to clean the inside

    Looks amazing, how often to you change the water?

      As it happens I changed it this weekend for the first time, haven't used it for 2 months though because of covid - I emptied out half and refilled it and added some chlorine tablets.
      Probably do it as a minimum once every two weeks but maybe more often if the water looks like it needs it 🤔

      Nothing special, wood paint for outdoors and metal paint

    Looks great! Two questions. All you did to clean it out was just power wash? Also, you didn’t seal the inside so it doesn’t leak?

      Yep just power wash but I also use chlorine tabs, and only small leaks

      @@bidders77 no, the pressure seals it. Small leaks on filling but not when full

    How did it hold up, would you recommend using the oak barrel or would there be less maintenance with plastic?

      It’s going strong, I even have a plastic portable one but much prefer the barrel, as long as you look after it and clean it every so often, it should last a while

      Yes, I use pool clean tablets

    How did you put the tap on? I've never done that before and was hoping for instructions :)

      I drilled a hole (10mm I think) and then simply screwed the tap in, you could seal it with mastic if the seal isn't great, but mine was fine and didn't need any

      I usually change it once every two weeks, I add in pool cleaning tablets I got online, Amazon I think the manufacturer is called Tukon, but I’m sure there are loads that do the same job

    Hi, only had mine a couple of weeks and emptied water once a week, but last 2 days the water has smelt of rotten eggs, do you use chlorine tablets and a dispenser?
    I’ve been adding ice to try and keep it under 20 degrees in this heat, but have read several comments on different chats having the same smell problems 😕
    Sorry for long questions, any help would be appreciated, thanks

      I use chlorine tabs, drop 7 initially then 3 every week, although when the hot weather came I have emptied it to landscape garden and haven’t refilled, gonna refill next week now the garden is done

    Hi. Do you still have the ice barrel? Does the barrel change the water color? I’ve cleaned mine, fit a filter but the water still changes color and still smells of whiskey. I’m thinking of painting the inside with something.

      Yeah still smells after several water changes, but I add chlorine tabs so I know it’s clean

    I’ve just bought the same barrel at it stinks inside I’ve given it a good scrub at jet wash, and it still stink. Did you use any cleaning products?

      I jet washed the inside, filled it up and added chlorine tablets, emptied it after a day then refilled and added mor chlorine tablets, that done the trick

      Drilled a 10mm hole (I think it was) then screwed the tap in, if it leaks you can use mastic

      @@gingeral Thank you for your reply, the barrel I bought has a thickness of 30mm and then I am planning on putting a pond liner inside as its been charcoaled and I don't want this flaking into the water, would you recommend using the same method you did? and was there a tap long enough to fit through to the other side, if so which one did you use, if you remember? sorry for all the questions, just want to get it right.

      I used a normal outside tap fitting with the neck around 20mm long, not sure what I would have used if I had pond liner 🤷‍♂️ maybe some pipe with some snap fitting or solder, not really sure to be honest 🤔

      I got it from looking online and a reclamation yard around the abertilery area was were I got it
