I get a lot of questions about how to set up wickets, so hopefully this video helps. If you want to increase your sprinting speed, work on stride length & frequency, and improve your sprinting posture, you should try some wicket sprints! Wickets are a great exercise for speed development, and one of the few speed drills that can actually transfer to performance.

Superb video. Not overcomplicated and very effective. I shall be sharing this with my young team. Thanks

Your technique is excellent, but can you please explain your rationale for using wickets? Some coaches say that it forces an unnatural stride pattern.

I've found it works well for 50% of athletes, OK for 25% of athletes, and terribly for 25% of athletes. Some people get freaked and all they can focus on is not hitting the hurdles, in which case they run terribly and its a waste of time. For those who can do it well, it helps promote proper posture, aggressive ground strike, and can help with teaching someone to emphasize frontside mechanics. As with any tool, it is not required but can help in certain instances.

I’m new to sprinting but finding the spacing to be rather short, even on grass, are these simply guidelines? I’d prefer to increase the distance between wickets.

What kind of hurdles are these called?

How many lead in steps do you take and how do you figure out that spacing?

+Bernardo's Training Gym I usually aim for a 10-15m run in, and set up a few cones prior to the wickets which allow for me to sync up where my steps should be so that I can end up in the middle of the wicket zones.

I actually used the settings from here for the xcell zone and your spacing for the wickets... if anybody is interested.... www.championshipproductions.com/files/tc-02012/Anderson-Max-Velocity-Drill-Spacing-Progression-Sprints.pdf

Why is there a man and woman spacing. I would think a 5' 10" woman, like myself, would have a similar stride as a 5' 10' man. What if I'm running them with a 5' 7" man? I just don't get the him/her spacing, that's a head scratcher for me.

height doesn't equal stride length, stride length is determined by power put into ground. Usually males have stronger power output.
