Solar panels are awesome - we were homeless for a couple off months and it meant we had internet in the tent! scores! Isn't there a USB dynamo for cycling though?
+Daniel Díaz hello, it is a alfine 8 speed hub, i was going to opt for a rolhoff hub but the gear shifters are not comfy for me so im now looking for a genesis 11 speed alfine with versa shifters. ruclips.net/video/1qGx_zRjYOg/видео.html
Daniel Díaz yeah its missing one middle range and one high range gear so an 11 speed should do perfectly, thanks buddy cheers for the support, feel free to link your videos/photos in the comments ;)
Brilliant set up HS! Clearly, you've put a lot of thought into this.. As always, top notch! Never thought of the Solar idea ... will defo be looking into that!
That was a great tip with the sliced peaches! Let me exchange my favourite cycling touring tip back: When you're cycling in some serious heat - put a sock around your water bottle and stick that in some water- any water. It'll feel like it came straight from the fridge rather than the kettle. When it all evaporates - repeat!
I got them from maplin which is a electronics shop in the uk. I shall be doing a full video of how I charge my equipment very soon with full details ;)
im not too sure about a link buddy as i got it in store but im sure ebay has cheaper ones, they are both 12vault and are meant for car battery's but i converted them with a 24v-5v usb plug-in. i have a video in my 'how to' playlist of how to wire it up, sorry havnt got a link but hope this helps ;) im in suffolk btw
I want to plan/do a cross country ride but I am torn on pad brakes vs disk brakes. One is simpler to fix but disc brakes are better but harder to fix when in the middle of nowhere. Your thoughts?
+kevin O good question ;) i have been thinking of converting to disc breaks myself but as you say we know how to fix normal lever brakes, in europe or america i recon disks are the way to go but although i say that i will be sticking to my lever brakes as is much cheaper and does a good job for me even when loaded up, thanks for reminding me mine need a tighten ;)
+jones a+jones I'm doing a review on bar bags tomorrow my friend, I got it from eBay for about £7. It does not have a brand that I can find, I can't find the sale receipt but is ruffly a 8L capacity and works great. There are only small 3L capacity bags now on eBay that I can find but I am sure amazon might have them, peace
hippyswift thanks man! So what did you search for on eBay to find the 3L bags? I got a city bike which might get one of those ☺ looking forward to your video.
hippyswift nice one thanks - Check out my channel too! Kind of biking and camping combined - but just not together, hence... The next step! Bikepacking/ touring! All the best dude 👍
HS scond one I,ve watched and its another good one. I love the way you've personalised your bike and its well thought out. What's also great is that like most of us you clearly have to budget everything like most of us and you prove that even without a big fat bank account you can get out there and do it. At 65 I,m an old boy but not too old to learn as I never realised about those solar panels. Thanks again for posting the video.
no worrys thanks for the great feedback :) yes my budget is basicly nothing ive worked and saved very hard for 5 years to have what ive got and never looked back, ive met people who at 70+ moved to peak district just to start cycling, bit crazy i thought but good on them, peace
Hey hippy stumbling upon this one. It's kind of ironic because today I went pricing bicycles and it looks like I'm going to get a surly Long Haul disc so I'm looking forward to that I think I'm going to be ordering it this week possibly Friday so we'll see looking forward to it so anyway I was looking on RUclips for the gadgets to outfit a Touring bike cuz that's what I'm going to eventually do is go on road tour so I'm looking forward to that and lo and behold I stumbled video as I mentioned before I really enjoy your videos peace and God bless
kool nice one surly are great bikes, never ridden one myself but lots of my touring friends have them so cant be bad, thanks for the support i am glad my video was a help for you ;) all the best
great video I haven't been out there since the smartphone changed everything cool setup with the solar panels I'd like to cross a continent again soon? cheers from Southern California
Dude...i came across your videos just a few minutes ago... just going through them randomly. Nice job! I love you bags and pouches. You say they are waterproof? Can you give some links or hints where can I get some of these? Much appreciated! Sorry, i did not read comments too far back.. probably others asked this before...
+Radu Clapa thanks dude I work hard on my videos ;) Yeah no problem, yes all my pouches are very handy for spreading weight properly. The pouches are desert DPM pouches and I reccomend the water bottle pouches as nice and large. My main bags are outeredge 100% waterproof from eBay, peace
hippyswift i searched a bit online but I could not find the big bag you have on your handlebar. the one where you keep your dslr. And sorry to ask for so many details, but are they waterproof? the pouches and the camera bag. the ones I found online so far are not waterproof. yours look awesome (the ones you have on your handlebar facing you)
Radu Clapa yeah the pouches are DPM but hard to get cheap, you find them mostly at carboot sales and surplus stores but a few on eBay, the bag with my DSLR is a camo camera bag if you look them up on eBay should be £5-9 mine is the 8L one, not a problem
hippyswift thanks for taking the time to give me these details! I will look them.over. Unfortunately I am.not in UK so I might not be able to find them. But I will search :) thanks!
+Radu Clapa it is fine my friend, try looking g them up on google images then click the photo to take you to their shop or sometimes it leads to a blog about them with more links to sellers, peace
+DROFHAPPINESS thank you ;) peace be with you my brother. i dont go by top of the line stuff, instead i think to myself 'will it do the job?', thats how you save money, most of my equipment wears out far quicker than gets a leak or breaks anyway so middle range gear is best, but then again i tried a co-motion bike aswell as rohloff hub and belt drive which was what i was going to get next but its not justified in the price, like you say buddy no need for top of the line here ;)
Hose clamps, plastic and stainless steel zipties, old inner tube rubber, electrical tape, and you can usually strap anything to a bike, bending up your own cages and braces then attaching them to your bike can be very rewarding
Ultimate? Nah. Sorry but the "ultimate" tour bike is fully suspended to start with. At one time a suspension was more of a liability than a benefit for long distance riding. That's no longer the case. The Ultimate Tour Bike (UTB) also carries all the gear fully suspended too, front and rear. Any bolted on rack is exactly that, a bolted on rack. Sufficient maybe but not ultimate. Rohloff Speed-Hub, dynamo front hub, blindingly bright light. disc brakes, fenders, mirrors. The UTB is able to carry 4 panniers (20 lbs. per), bar bag (5 to 10 lbs.), have a center stand and pull a trailer capable of pulling an additional 90 lbs. of food, water, toys, luxuries, necessities and more important options. The UTB will allow you to use whatever gear is best for the terrain and environment you are in at the time. I will always put up a hammock when I can but when that's not a possibility, and the weather is dry, having a pop-tent is fast and easy. If you are in the Olympic National Forrest pretty much anytime a Cuben Fiber Trail-Star will keep you happy and dry. The weight limits of the UTB allow a rider to live comfortably pretty much indefinitely when carrying the proper gear. It's not necessary to ride in dirty stinking clothes or to stand 1/2 naked in some laundrette in Boring Oregon. You can do more than reconstitute, boil, and fry while riding. I made a big stir-fry behind a families vegetable stand on the side of a road once. The lady ate with me and then gave all my money back. We sat and talked and I made tea until her kids came home from school. To me touring means more about where you are then where you are going or how fast you can do it. I have a friend that doesn't like to get off the bike, doesn't like to camp. doesn't like to chit-chat. He likes to rack up miles and is good at it. AAaaaaah, what does he know? He's a dick. But the UTB will do that kind of riding too. The UTB should let you ride the way you want, with what you want, and let you arrive fresh and relaxed and that means a motor. The UTB has a 750w center drive motor so that it complies with American laws allowing it to ride anywhere in North America with no license or registration. The UTB has to be able to pedal like a standard tour bike when desired. And to the chagrin of many a lycra clad speedster, the UTB can follow the gaggle up and down hills while drinking coffee and listening to a Fugoo XL blue-tooth speaker, or an MTB on single track. thanks for the extra long comment brian ;) at the start of the video i say it is not about the bike, it is about how you use the gear and how mentally prepared you are, thanks
Yepp this was indeed the first popular video I had buddy. No matter what I title videos I find I still only get a few thousand views. It's a good number of people watching but nowhere near pewdiepie haha
Great video Hippyswift! I like how you use solar power on your tours. Love the canned peaches idea too!
+Will Bryan thanks will ;) i needed my peaches in scotland so well worth 70p.
Solar panels are awesome - we were homeless for a couple off months and it meant we had internet in the tent! scores!
Isn't there a USB dynamo for cycling though?
JETJOOBOY
yes there are usb converters for hubs, i made one myself for $1, video on that subject coming soon ,
peace
+hippyswift Scores! !
Glad to have found your video!
Can you tell what sleeping pad you use? I need to buy a new one for my cycle touring.
The mat is an Oex reverse Imx, around £45 from go outdoors 👍 I've used it for years works great
thanks!@@hippyswift
No true tourist will ever leave his or her teddy bear at home. Really nice to know exactly where you put things
haha thanks bob ;)
yeah i thought this info could help you, ride safe
Old school, time tested and practical setup.
Could you please send a link to these pouches, ideally for a seller in North America?
Yes this setup done me very well indeed 🙂 I'm not sure where to buy the pouches, I got them from an army surplus store years ago. All the best
I’m doing a solo bicycle trip at the end of this year I already have all the accessories I need to pack
Nice job! Good luck on your adventures my friend
Please let me know what type of times did you use? 700x32?
Yes 700x32mm 👍
Do u think that 700x22 is enough for all kinds of road ?
Yes 32mm tires are what I have always ridden while loaded touring, they done all the roads Ive been on and cope good with dirt tracks
Thanks so much for your kindly sharing!
No worries 👍
what are your thoughts on using flatbars on touring bikes? a lot of tourers use flatbars.
flats are too wide for myself although i have seen nice bikes with then,
Is that a Rolhoff hub you have?
+Daniel Díaz hello, it is a alfine 8 speed hub, i was going to opt for a rolhoff hub but the gear shifters are not comfy for me so im now looking for a genesis 11 speed alfine with versa shifters.
ruclips.net/video/1qGx_zRjYOg/видео.html
Nice. That should provide you with a wider range on your gears. Cool setup, by the way!
Daniel Díaz
yeah its missing one middle range and one high range gear so an 11 speed should do perfectly, thanks buddy cheers for the support, feel free to link your videos/photos in the comments ;)
+donald walter :) kool
+donald walter i seem to collect bikes aswell ;) checkout what i have here >>> ruclips.net/video/NlTmfjWlPvs/видео.html
What do you carry in your first aid kit?
Just a few of the normal range of kit plus some saline solution to clean deep wounds.
When it all evaporates - repeat!
kool thanks for the tip I shall try that :) glad you liked the video. peace
Where did you get that solar panel from? Not been able to find one that size for so cheap
I got them from maplin which is a electronics shop in the uk. I shall be doing a full video of how I charge my equipment very soon with full details ;)
Do you have a link to the item? I'm in the UK too
im not too sure about a link buddy as i got it in store but im sure ebay has cheaper ones, they are both 12vault and are meant for car battery's but i converted them with a 24v-5v usb plug-in. i have a video in my 'how to' playlist of how to wire it up, sorry havnt got a link but hope this helps ;) im in suffolk btw
How is the bag you use as a handlebar bag held on, I have a similar bag.
the secret art of cable tyes my friend ;)
i shall be going through my bike in detail in a few video's time. peace
How about the cover of your bags when the rain down and there is no place for shelter?
These bags are fully waterproof 👍
I want to plan/do a cross country ride but I am torn on pad brakes vs disk brakes. One is simpler to fix but disc brakes are better but harder to fix when in the middle of nowhere. Your thoughts?

what do you have in your panniers on a touring ride?
+world traveler this is my 2014 gear ruclips.net/video/U4rSTahaNbQ/видео.html
I've just ordered a solar panel for less than £8 off ebay. Great advice and I really enjoy your videos.
Thanks Michael 👍 glad you found a cheap one as they can get expensive
How long does your (tiny) solar panel needs to charge a phone or usual sized battery pack? Thank you.
A 2500mah battery takes about 4-6 hours to charge, I don't charge direct in case of an overload
Like the vids, can I ask what pannier bags and sizes you have front and back?
yes the are outer edge bags, the rear are 25L each ad front are 16L each. thanks glad you enjoy them ;) peace
Hey hippy. I am searching for exactly sth like your camera bag. Can you tell me the name of it or where you found it? Cheers mate!
+jones a+jones I'm doing a review on bar bags tomorrow my friend, I got it from eBay for about £7. what do you meen buddy?
hippyswift I mean as a touring bike do you know about the bullet larry vs harry
Dude...i came across your videos just a few minutes ago... just going through them randomly. Nice job!

+Clay Guinard nope no idea buddy
hippyswift Google it
hippyswift actually you tube it
Nice intro video. Like me, you show that to tour, you don't need the top of the line equipment to be 'happy'. Keep up the good work.
+DROFHAPPINESS thank you ;) peace be with you my brother.
i dont go by top of the line stuff, instead i think to myself
'will it do the job?', thats how you save money,

The most vital component: Basil Brush. =)
Nice set up you have there.

Instead of a tin of peaches put a water bottle full of peaches in the water bottle cage!
Great idea 😎
Peace to you too, keep it simple,if it works well use it,no need for the latest "Carlos Fandango Gucci Gear"
+Tom Keir no argument there buddy ;)
I'm not trying to be a d*ck or anything, lad. But erm.... Have someone in your life ever told you that you kinda sounds like dough from thor ragnarok?
Yes a few on the internet, not a clue though haha 😁
no need for the language- My kids !
Sorry dude this is years ago before I knew kids watched me. Thanks for watching
toooo much "stuff"
lots of pockets allow me to leave my front panniers at home on occations
that seems to be the way it works out I've found. And then on longer trips I can add the front panniers for more food.
🌵Patrick's Bushcraft🐍
exactly ;) got to have lots of food to keep you warm and half sane haha ;)
DOOD!

thanks for the extra long comment brian ;) at the start of the video i say it is not about the bike, it is about how you use the gear and how mentally prepared you are, thanks
And it seems it's "about" neither the best of gear or bike.
It's about using the gear you have efficiently. No need for expensive stuff just get out and go
Seems more like it's about making a vid to try and be noticed over showing quality gear. I can suggest other titles if you want.
Yepp this was indeed the first popular video I had buddy. No matter what I title videos I find I still only get a few thousand views. It's a good number of people watching but nowhere near pewdiepie haha
One thing you forgot...proper English
