Just seeing your story now. Coming to the USA it all depends on who is hosting you. I have been here for the past 20 years and I can not regret a day of me being here. For 2 reasons, my heart breaks reading this comment.
      1. We just lost a Nigerian music legend, Sound Sultan who sang a song by this title. One of the most heartfelt songs to ever come out of Nigeria.
      2. I just watched the story of "Immaculate" whose people turned against themselves and started taking lives. - The, Rwanda genocide. I left thinking.... Is there really no place like home?

You forgot: Don't come to America thinking it's the promise land. 2. Racism is real. 3. Don't hate on your own people. 5. Research the laws; research the economics; research the societal norms before coming to America, make sure to have solid connections while still in Africa. 6. Most of all, ask God if it is His will for you to come in the first place. 7. Stop worshipping white people as if they are gods. There is good & bad among all people 8. Ask for help when you need it. 9. Stop judging the African Americans (descendants of Africa's children), because we are always told we are black & non human in the eyes of the Colonizers. These too are the lessons in her life story.

Great story Sister. This is your west African brother from Minnesota and you're so right. The racism is still here even after we protested so hard for George Floyd's victory its even getting worse now. I also think its time for us Africans to build the motherlsnd for our selves snd love, protect each other. Even with a higher degree I am still treated like crap in America whiles a white person who does not have a degree for thesame job is respected, and control you the qualified black person at the job. There are blacks and other minorities here who suppurt this racism and help make it possible due other opportunities and also because they are scared.

Western countries no doubt have advanced infrastructures and a somewhat better standard of living, but there is also poverty, mental illness, depression and loneliness. So sometimes it's better to stay where you are and work hard and take small steps to make your life better. I wish this amazing woman the very best for the future..

Am from The Bahamas and in my early sixties. This young lady's story reminds me of when I was in my early twenties and went to Switzerland to work at the head office of the bank I was employed at in my small country for the first time. It was there I was called a nigger for the first time. I almost got kidnapped through some scheme thinking it was for real modeling. If I didn't have family and friends praying for me, her story could have been mine. I just hope and pray that more people research, before they travel to any "first world" country because there are a lot of fake and evil people in this world. God must have a great purpose for her life because she could have been trafficked. I know she will do well because of her genuine happy spirit. Keep striving, my friend.

And that is why I am sad when I see African women advocating that our mothers should leave like western women. African women are some of the most hardworking on earth. They are strong. They are the backbone of our society. In most of our towns and villages in Yorubaland, the women form thrift cooperative societies where they contribute money and support each other's businesses. I saw a 2018 Brooking Institution report that indicated an average working adult in the US will have to borrow if they have a $400 emergency. But I can tell you an average market woman in Mile 12, Lagos Nigeria or Bodija, Ibadan (also in Nigeria) can COMFORTABLY afford that.
Let's learn to be original and appreciate our heritage.

Thank you Mercy for being candid. I truly empathize with your adverse experience in the US.
For dreamers, my advice is first to find a mature relative or friend who lives in the diaspora before you get there. These will provide the needed mentoring for the young scholar. And when you get here, listen, focus and be resilient.
What I have observed over the years living in the US, is that students who come here as freshmen, find it harder to adjust compared to those that come here to pursue graduate education. I think it is because graduate students are more likely to be experienced, mature and wiser. What is more, graduate students are more likely to get a scholarship or job as teaching/research assistants (TAs/RAs) at the universities. Therefore, unless you have resources to finance your education as a freshman in North America or Europe, my counsel is that you should postpone your coming until you have earned a baccalaureate in your country of origin. When you get here, find where your people are, and link with them; Don’t isolate yourself. You will do better that way.
Mercy, we serve a personal God who hears our prayers. When we speak with a believing heart, he hears; And before we call, he answers. Sometimes, God uses adversity to strengthen us. I know things will get better for you. Please keep the faith!

She is under 30 and had already gone through all these in life, so her major problem was traveling to America at a tender age, many that went there at a young age also ended up like this because they were so young and had no one to care for them and direct them towards the right direction, and many men will see it as an opportunity to take advantage of them, but thanks be to God that she is alive and when there is life, there is always hope.
This is a big lesson to you parents that want to send your young one to America to go and study, allow your kids to finish university in Africa and then they can go abroad to do their Masters Degree when they are already matured and cannot be easily deceived by anyone that wants to lead them towards a wrong direction.

Just my two cents after watching Mercy's experience:
    - For those who would love to relocate- It is important for one to do a lot of RESEARCH before you relocate abroad.
    - Second to this: KEEP THE MAIN THING THE MAIN THING. You can pursue everything else you want after you have fullfiled your visa conditions. Otherwise, you will be in breach real quick.
Even international students who have had to bypass the law to pay the outrageous fees...stay in school at all costs - well, most of them at least.
    - Thirdly it is important to CHECK YOUR EXPECTATIONS. It is important to take full accountability for yourself. Act as if everyone who can support you is dead and work with that mindset, because even people of goodwill will only go so far with the help.
    - ESTABLISH YOURSELF FIRST, settle or stabilize before you can extend help to those back at home. Eg during a plane emergency, you will need to wear an oxygen mask first, before you can help your own child or others.
People back at home have survived thus far, a little while longer will not mean their demise. Make it clear and put boundaries- otherwise you may end up stressed, have mental health issues or be pulled in so many different directions to sustain these demands.
    - KEEP YOUR FRIENSHIP CIRLES CLOSE as well. Too many acquaintances can lead you down different paths. Align yourself with people who will help you cross the bridge and build yourself first.
    - GROW SLOW AND STEADY- people who have what you want or are where you want to be, have travelled a long way before you; you have just met them in their season of success and abundance.
    - WHEN YOU MAKE MISTAKES, LEARN THE LESSON QUICKLY AND RECALCULATE. When your abroad, going back to the same thing may not only cost you time and resources, it can affect your status too.
    - Always TAKE OWNERSHIP of your role in every decision, circumstance or action that involves you...this is the only way to learn and know how or what to do better.
    - Finally, ATTITUDE is key. Just like Kenny Rogers says; you got to know when to hold up, know when to walk away and know when to run. You will face hardships, micro- aggressions, overt racism among many other things but not always. That said, you need to use a lot of discretionary wisdom to not always respond or get into the habit of reactionary responses. Always remember, you will never have the comfort of being above the law or leniency extended to residents or citizens. Therefore keep your wits about you.
All the best Mercy in your new journey

I am a child of a Luo-Abasuba polygamous family - also SDA like Mercy - and I can see her life happening just like a movie. I am lucky to be the child of the first wife who went to school and so all my full siblings are college-educated - the hard way coz we come from a poor family, but we all have a college education. The children of my second mum - who is also my mum's cousin on the maternal side - all dropped out of primary school and ran away to get married young. The neglect of my half-siblings by my dad is just too painful to watch. The third wife only has one child who is older than my mom's children - she also dropped out of primary school to get married.
I remember my mom one time angrily saying if it were not for her, we would not have gotten educated, and I now see the truth. I now hear my dad - who is now retired - trotting around the village with pride that he educated his children, that he is now a respected village elder, and I shudder. Coz my memory of my childhood is just pure chaos and C-PTSD to the extent that now at 40yrsold, I realize that I need serious therapy - my life could have ended up being like this girls. It still has the potential to, if I don't take care and keep myself grounded.
My 20s and 30s were chaotic - when you don't have stability at home and have parents who are not keen on holding your hand as you navigate young adulthood, then you can land into serious chaos. This world is not kind. When polygamous husbands and their wives are only concerned about their jealousy, warfare and internal competition, all they do is destroy their own children, and this girl's story is a good example. Other people you meet on the way can also smell your childhood neglect from a km away and only God can keep you safe under His arms otherwise you end up a high-end prostitute, and people do end up that way.
Polygamy is not for everyone, and this girl is the poster child for the mess that is polygamy. And the poster child for Daddy Issues. Daddy Neglect.
You can imagine that when she was getting the letter to go to the States - as a naive 18yr teenager from Alego who had never gone to Nairobi - her father was still alive. We don't hear of the father even advising or holding her hand to go to the immigration, get a passport, etc. She didn't even know what to do or what papers she needed in order to travel. She had to fundraise her own transport to Nairobi, imagine. Where was the dad???
Her father didn't even help her with the initial research - even though he is old, he knows people in the village who have gone to the USA, who could have helped her and held her hand through the process. There are many Luos from Siaya and Kisumu who have gone to the States for Academics/Work etc, and if the father had done his duty to his teenage girl, her story would have been so different. She might not have gone to that SDA school in the first place. Parental support is very important to young adults, and in polygamous families, it's often just chaos and chaos and non-ending competition. It's the way I hear Akuku Danger the comedian joking about his family's woes that just makes me sigh. Men. Men, Men! How many times did I call you??? Stop marrying many women and getting children you cannot support.
