Unfortunately I've been dealing with some art theft issues in the past month. While this is by no means the first time it happened, it definitely was a reminder to be aware of the types of thieves out there and do what you can to protect your work.

If you having a problem trying to prove your work is yours, metadata is a solution. Every photo has a metadata attached to the photo that has the description of the file, the origin of the file, and etc. You can use the date when the file is made and when the stealer posted the work as evidence. You can also use an official distributor that attaches ISRC or UPC metadata codes(Discokid,Tunecore, etc.) to your work if its a video. Just put a distinct audio sound file made by you into the video(like a jingle or something) add the ISRC code(if personalized) and that should work. Its not guaranteed but its something.

Artists will need to go back to watermarking or putting protection on their artwork files so it won’t get stolen. This sucks AI is really ruining the value of art to non artists. They think they can generate good art when it’s a skill that is learned.

Especially considering all of the AI stuff going on right now, I think this would be a good time for artist to be able to have a more legal way to track their work. As stated here it would be a lot to put a contract down for every piece of work. However, if we had a protection program where you could upload pictures, process photos, recordings for your work, and you can be verified as xyz artist and link to your social media. If possible it could also be helpful to have more professional references that can back you up on the matter. These programs can be updated every 6 months to a year to account to any potential major changes in style and subject matter, and could potentially have legal backing.
I'm sure this idea has several flaws, but I think something like this could offer artist more safety as we are just kinda flailing around out here without much protection. We kinda rely on the communities we build and the platforms we post on to have our backs when it comes to this stuff, but a lot of times that's not enough, especially if you don't have a big following.

I have a lot of paranoia about sharing my work as much because of this. It's a huge deterrent and it confuses me what I can do to protect my work without coming across as overly paranoid with the donut steel craze like teenage silly days. Watching your videos helps those of us feel we aren't alone and it's an increasingly widespread problem. Until lawsuits ensue which, let's face it most of us artists wouldn't have the means to do that and most of the time it might not even be worth it, these thieves will never stop. It's really a whack a mole thing to keep up. :(

    • @missliv.404

I'm honestly feeling like you can literally do nothing but ruin your entire art with gigantic watermarks, which makes your art unappealing to look at, which makes people less likely to follow. Or paywalls, but we're all broke so yeah. Artists just can't have it easy 😕

Thankfully on RUclips they take copyright claims seriously and its not a difficult process so I have been able to get accounts to take my videos off of them quite easily and faster. Infact youtube lets you know themselves that they found these videos on other channels and you can decide what action you want to take. Gotta say I love youtube and hope this tiktok issue resolves for you and other artists soon too! Sending love and hugs💫

I'm so sorry this is happening. As if it wasn't already challenging to have to do so much excess work to market and organise your social media accounts as an artist - on top of creating the actual art- and then having to protect it aswell is exhausting. I've been art making since I was really young , I've been following you since deviant art days over a decade ago. I am so happy to continue to see your art, but I'm not as brave as you and never post my artwork because I'm afraid of art theft. I'm going to head over and report the account and hope others do, too. It is well within your right to put those huge watermarks on and I hope you aren't deterred by the negative feedback I very often see to noticeable watermarks.

I try to include my signature inside of the artwork now. Like put it in the clothing, the hair, or leg, etc. So that they have to work to find them all. I'm sorry that is happening to you though. A friend of mine constantly has her work stolen because she's a great artist, so they take her work and others, and pretend to be them on Insta. Insta doesn't do much either unfortunately. Hopefully there will be constant amount of people reporting them, and it leads to the accounts being deleted. But yeah it's so difficult to keep your stuff from being taken. You have the typical users posting your works without credit, then people pretending to be you, and then AI taking your work and remaking it.

@mewTripled Could you have props and t-shirt logos (basically any setting elements) shaped and colored as your watermark? Like if your character is going to restaurant then the signage of the restaurant panel is your watermark and the reflection of that signage in other areas of that panel is your watermark as well. Basically something that makes your watermark even harder to remove but also native to the story? Just an idea.

Layers: (because I'm a solo graphic novel artist) I make my lineworks *months* before I finally get around to coloring them. The lineworks rarely go live, so it would be awkward to try to rip them off. And also, metadata, which you can get from your PC, Android or Google drive, for example.

What is super annoying, is that with just a little bit of online search and checks, they can can easily figure out who is the real artist and legit account. But why would they spend more than a minute to reply to you (if it’s even actual people replying)?! On another note, I am too old for this shit, called TikTok, but I hate it passionately for bringing these “reels” to Instagram and RUclips. I truly feel you and am v disappointed that this happened. I went through something v similar in March on Instagram and the worst part was, I actually lost my account with a pretty substantial following. The clone account stayed up longer than mine...! This clone account was also PMing my followers trying to scam money out of them. I like you, made a number of reports plus a copyright claim to Instagram and received some really rude responses (or was just ignored!) about proving ownership (I too sent screen grabs and a detailed report) their final email stated not to reply but to open a new case. Sound familiar? So... I'm gutted for you but def not surprised about the responses you received from TikTok. Sorry for the rant! It seems I'm still rather mad about it so I can empahthise GREATLY!! And yes, it took sooo much time and emotional energy too, I completely get that! I don't have the answers and unfortunately art theft (or just content theft) is rampant on SM with no safety mechanisms in place... These sites don't care...

After I reported the violations, TikTok sent me an email a week later saying that the infringing videos had been removed. But in reality, the videos were still intact on the platform. Calling or emailing TikTok's Chinese branch did not help as they claimed TikTok and Douyin were separate and that they would not handle TikTok matters. I now spend a significant amount of time on copyright protection instead of creating animations. I simply cannot muster any goodwill towards TikTok.

If you're just sharing it to share on Insta to promote your work, at this point I'd always make the panels a vid or moment, watermark, and show yourself and your @ handles on media at the end unless it's just a promoted post to an event/book/link. More of a hassle for you I'm sure, but less clicking for us browsers - I always love to know the artist behind the work anyway. Tech is extremely lazy, especially these media sites, and it would be easy to have a certified check on uploads to owner but they don't care, too busy touting themselves as "industry leaders" and "technological marvels." It used to drive me crazy where I would point out how pathetic our identity/security implementations are, and it would be dismissed, then leak after leak after hack after hack after impersonation after impersonation, and I'm standing there with that look like, f'ing told you hacks, but they don't care, they have to fly their private jet to impregnate some obscure pop artist (heh heh, name that tech fraud). I would def consider analyzing the success with artists involved and brainstorm how you guys could network and repeat the effort for your own benefit.
