I could never look away when Mikkelsen and Dancy were on screen together, whether they were battling it out verbally or physically or if they were just sharing a meal together. There were hints that Will and Hannibal's relationship was way more than enemies, friends or a twisted bromance. The show did not hammer the motive of the characters into your mind, instead it forced you to look at the details. Example, Will stated Hannibal alienated or killed anyone in Will's life that was not Hannibal himself. Hannibal replies he only wants what is best for him. Hannibal was telling Will, right there, that only Hannibal was best for him. Will was anti-social, even shying away from Jack when they first meant. His first meeting with Hannibal he was far more open and communicative. After that the only person Will looked in the eyes was Hannibal. Bedelia pointed out that Hannibal was in love with him. At end of the Mason arc Will let Hannibal leave with no strings attached. Mads and Hugh did an incredible job showing how these two were soulmates, toxic, but they loved each other the best they could. There was not need for them to kiss or have a sex scene, like you said the show clearly showed sex didn't mean love.

    I recall thinking Will's fatherly behaviour toward Abigail was because he just didn't want her to feel as alone as he felt and consequently become something like him, or her actual father. But now I wonder if he wasn't just doing it because at the time he mistakenly thought it was what he was supposed to do when one kills someone's dad: become that Dad. Which, in many ways, he sort of does become specifically Abigail's Dad, with the whole murder/crazy thing he's convinced he's committed (to). In retrospect, I'm not sure how I came to either of those conclusions.

    • @dcworld4349
      @dcworld4349 2 года назад +29

      Well, he does collect stray dogs and Hannibal does ask him if she's yet another stray to which Will isn't really able to answer. Probably because at the time he was sick and he has several moments in season 1 where it does seem like he feels because he killed Hobbs and got too close to replicate his mind that he had times he felt like he was becoming him even before Hannibal framed him.
      I think Fuller said it best when he joined a review of the season 2 finale, if you accept that the show operates more on dream logic rather than being literally true. Will is shown to view all of his imagined realities and outcomes of his choices to all be equally valid things to do and that he himself doesn't fully understand why he does what he does until the moment is fully presented to him. Even some of his choices like dreaming about killing Hannibal and yet saving him when he had the chance with Mason having strung him up, or hoping that warning Hannibal would make him run rather than try to kill Jack. At least I got the feeling that was because Will had replaced Hobbs with Hannibal in his mind. Where he does certain things because "he's curious about what would happen".
      The one thing that didn't make the most sense to me even from a dream logic view is, when Will finds Hannibal in season 3, what made him try to kill Hannibal before he was shot? Was it because he was injured after Jack almost killed Hannibal so that he felt if he was going to do it that would be the best chance he would have? Did he think Hannibal was going to do the exact same to him? Because we know Hannibal stabbed Will in season 2 without killing him so that Hannibal could get his vacation while Will recovered. Yes, in his conversation with Bedelia Hannbail concludes and says that he would have to eat Will to forgive him. But, and I could be completely wrong about this, I got the sense that Hannibal started cutting into Will's head because Will tried to kill him, when Will as Hannibal says "you forgive as God forgives". Hannibal knows that eventually he's been going on such a reckless rampage that he's going to get caught by somebody, but he never really tries to kill Will again, just his family. Wanting Will to have nothing else in his life that isn't him, trying to give Will another chance to accept his "rare gift". And with the post credit scene where we see there are two seats at the table, it very much implies that not only did Will and Hannibal survive, Will must have decided them surviving meant he could no longer stop. Even a deleted scene showing them going to church together. Too bad they couldn't have used Clarice on the show, if you change her character a bit to make it fit the show. It could be interesting to have her, Jack, Alana and Margot be the ones on search for the both of them. With Clarice acting as the crazy expert the way Will was in season 1 and Hannibal was at the first half of season 2.

    • @Amy-fe5mm
      @Amy-fe5mm 2 года назад +15

      To me the whole thing with the lines blurring between Will and the killers because of his empathy he often feels like he is them, and their wants and needs influence his. And when he killed Hobbs he was impacted so much he almost adopted aspects of Hobbs? If you get me? And a large aspect was being Abigail’s father, he had empathised enough to imagine loving your daughter so much you’d murder her and others at the thought of her leaving and that protectiveness imprinted on Will

  • @neeniesims9980
    @neeniesims9980 Год назад +76

    I always thought Will felt fatherly toward Abigail because he had a soft spot in his heart for collecting stray dogs, which with Abigail newly orphaned, makes sense. Will always considered himself a stray too, never knowing his mother and always moving place to place, always being a stranger. I think his attachment to Abigail is fully justified, but maybe not fully apparent on a first watch through.

    • @deadlvrs
      @deadlvrs Год назад +23

      Also, to add to the stray dog metaphor, Will has a tendency to care for the mistreated. Georgia Madchen in season 1 and Peter Bernardone in season 2 are two victims that Will attaches to. He's empathetic and strives for connections with people like him / what he sees himself as.

  • @GodsGrieff
    @GodsGrieff 2 года назад +333

    I think in Hannibal's mind, he was guiding Will into a journey through Hell, Purgotory and Paradise as he sets his mind on fire(literally Hell incarnate), abducts Abigail Hobbs( as we know Dante finds his beloved Beatrice in purgatory) and finally to get to live with Will and Abigail happily ever after in Paradise, only to find out about Will's true intentions. He denies him of his Paradise and decides to sacrifice it in front of Will's eyes...as if the gates of heaven are closed to him forever.
    And throughout the season 3 We see will trying to salvage his way to heaven once more only this time, he has to gain his passing through unconditional Love!
    I'm basing this on Hannibal's total fetishization of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy since in season 1 we saw him crying in the Opera( a rare scene actually when he gets truly emotional) which is based on Dante's journey through hell.
    Love to know your opinion on it, in the comments!

    i love Bedelia because i read her as completely petrified. Every word and gesture is carefully measured to keep her off Hannibal’s table. He won’t let her quit the mindgames, and each move could be her last.
    In Season 2 she’s living in the lion’s den while being literally made of delicious steaks, and i read Gillian Anderson’s performance as almost delerious with terror, holding herself to the knife’s edge she’s walking. If she came across as “petrified wood” to some, I’m sorry it took away from the show for them

  • @Leblonk1
    @Leblonk1 2 года назад +116

    Ok, I get where you're coming from with Bedelia, but let me play devil's advocate for a moment: I will always have a soft spot for Bedelia because of Antipasto. That whole episode treats her like an audience surrogate, and while she shows no strong emotions and appears detached, we can also see that she's constantly speculating and wondering about Lecter. Her face when Professor Sogliato starts being aggressively rude, or when Lecter invites Dimmond to his lecture on Dante shows exactly what she's thinking, and her surprise when Lecter appears to spare Dimmond, and denies any interest in killing Sogliato reflects the surprise of the audience.
    The "Observe or Participate" scene forces her to recognize that her curiosity and observation are in fact forms of participation, and that then forces the audience to a similar realization. This is a slap in the face that we couldn't have gotten from Will. For Will, observing has always been linked to participation. He sees a crime scene and imagines himself creating it. Bedelia tricked herself into thinking she was an innocent observer, which might explain her detached demeanor. Her shock and quiet horror as Lecter rips down her defenses and she realizes how implicated she is lands perfectly for me, and it imbues the same horror in me as I realize that I'm no better than she is. It's a beautiful and masterful blurring of the divide between the show and the audience and I adore it!

    Excellent video, as Hannibal would say, “I love your work 🙃”. My only different take was on Abigail, I felt it was a fairly straightforward jump for them to feel paternal or in better words responsible. She was fated to be Hobbs last victim, and by saving her life Will in a sense took responsibility for it.

    I find your point about chiyoh and bedelia being mostly redundant interesting - you're right, that them saying "oh Hannibal's in my head too!" cheapens Will's struggle a bit, but I think it also shows something else - Hannibal has *tried* this before. he's tried to make connections and make people see the world how he sees it. but they've never really surrendered. chiyoh and bedelia indulge in violence somewhat, but Hannibal is never really successful with them to the degree he is with changing will. I think it almost reinforces that will and Hannibal are each other's violent match

    the strongest thing for me is the strange nature of hannibal and wills relationship. I don’t find it that controversial that will doesn’t “reciprocate”. Everything Hannibal wanted for Will, Will made a reality for Hannibal. it’s so twisted and beautiful. This show is definitely carried by Mads’ and Hugh’s performance, and I absolutely adored Chilton. Im surprised your channel isn’t bigger lol you’re very concise and and media literate.

    It's a poetic horror show. Love the level of the class presented by Brian Fuller. I had to go back and watch the movies, which I had not before, just to compare Anthony Hopkins and Mads Mickelsen, the latter did not even come close to giving me any chance of criticism. I am a permanent fan of his now.

      It's the 'art' aesthetic of the murder scenes which adds another level to it. Hannibal's taste for art & culture is reflected in the grandiosity & 'display' element of the murder scenes. That he's refined, elegant, cultured & loves art etc makes him different & more horrifying than the usual serial killer.

    the food scenes are honestly immaculate. the level of detail, the effort put in. it is an impeccable example of show don't tell when it comes both to hannibal's excellence as a gourmand and is totally psychopathic relationship to his victims. they are MEAT. we don't need him to monologue about it, we see it and it is a sick delight. i think also there is so much black comedy in the food scenes: you are simultaneously disgusted and enticed as a viewer, made complicit as a voyeur to this beauty and this horror, which is simply a stroke of genius

    it might be just bc gillian anderson was my gay awakening but I never got tired of her in hannibal - if you read her as constantly off her tits wine drunk the whole character has this great quality and some of the most comedic lines (also season 3 alana never read as emotionless to me, although I did have a problem with the whole trauma making a character cold and strong trope that we've seen a million times, and would have loved if she'd retained more of her earlier compassion and used that as a strength)

    I think Will's paternal feelings towards Abigail don't need more explanation. He was using his ability to put himself in her dad's place and killing him set him off-kilter. I think he may take on that father figure role not only because he feels responsible, but also because he got stuck on it?
    Regarding Miriam's brain washing, I can buy it, trauma can allow for that kind of thing, and her experience was pretty traumatic. I agree the rest doesn't make a lot of sense, though, but it's fun and very well done, so it's easy to ignore the flaws, as you said.
    I don't think having Chiyo and Bedelia be influenced by Hannibal cheapens what he is doing to Will. As I see it, it shows that Hannibal is unable to form a connection with other people, and tries to do that by manipulating others, either to be like him or fear him to the point of not going against him. But with will is different, because Will is able to understand Hannibal, but he doesn't try to imitate him completely like Gideon did. It's like Hannibal drove Will into madness to see what happened, and helped WIll develop his dark side, while with other people he was just influencing their actions by provoking admiration or fear.
    I think Bedelia joined Hannibal out of fear, and Hannibal took Bedelia just to build a new image. She was his cover (his beard, dare I say). Hannibal was just using her, and she was scared, and maybe a bit hopeful that by playing along she would be able to escape somehow.

    I would love to see another season but the last season, in itself, gives a really good conclusion to the whole story. As much as I love the relationship between Hannibal and Will, season 3 is potentially the perfect ending, if they died after jumping off.
    Hannibal has always been portrayed as someone who thinks differently (i mean cmon, killing is art for him and he eats people) and any kind of love you get from that man is just outright destructive in general. But since we are seeing the show in the eyes of Will, we eventually came to understand Hannibal's nature and accepted him and his love. Will is a monster like him so they understood each other better than anyone else.
    A kiss on that cliff wouldnt have worked for me too. Since, again, Hannibal for me is someone who loves in an entirely different way. That murder duo they did to Dolarhyde was already the "kiss" from their twisted love story.
    Them jumping off that cliff, if season 3 was THE finale, was a GREAT ending to the whole show cause despite Will's awakening as a killer, he still was able to choose the right course of action to kill both him and his love, stopping their insanity before they could bring it to the outside world.

      there’s a post credit scene that shows a table set for three people, with bedelia sitting at the head of it, her own leg served in front of her. since there were three plates it was heavily implied that hannibal and will had both survived, and bryan fuller eventually confirmed it.

    • @headwound

      I agree the s3 finale would be a beautiful and perfect ending, but to me it doesn't matter whether they live or not tbh, or if only the other survives.
      I think it adds to the magic of the show, it leaves you to wonder. There's so many possibilities! I've spend so much time thinking about the tragedy of only one of them surviving, them both sailing off into the sunset together and the idea of them sinking to the sea floor together. I can't remember who it was or where, but I saw someone describe how they imagined that Hannibal and Will both died, and instead of ever getting to consume each other, they now lay on the sea floor equally powerless, getting consumed my sea critters and salt water. Wow!

    I don't agree with the chiyoh part. She's there to give us Hannibal's backstory about Mischa and to tie in elements from the fourth book (the castle, Hannibal avenging Mischa etc). And to show Will that Hannibal can care about other people (since he seems to be unclear about that) and be influenced (there are means of influence other than violence etc etc). Plus I don't think she's there to replace Beverly, the two are very different characters. Also she's there to serve as will in place of Will (ie Will is toying with her the way Hannibal was toying with him, after she kills the imprisoned guy.) I don't like that particular plot point but it's there, and he's doing it because she's someone Hannibal loves- noone else could be that. I can see the cynical pov that she's just there to be a token asian now that you pointed it out but I don't really buy it.
    Especially because she is a character from the books, and her presence is most of the Hannibal Rising-driven parts we get.
    I have a love/hate relationship with the episode she's introduced. I also find it tedious like you. But visually it's one of my favorites.
    All in all I agree that season 3 was a bit of a drag with pretentiousness off the roof, but with some huge payoffs. I found the lack of emoting also offputing and gravitated towards Jack more this season than the previous ones. But I would not call the female characters boring, I liked Chiyo as a whole and I think Alana and Bedelia do a lot of the heavy lifting actually, even though the character changes were noticable. Honestly Will gives me the most trouble this season. Though I love him.

      Hannibal is just salty that Mischa was fed to him from evil people so he is using his supernatural gifts as revenge against God or whatever by doing it the same to the other people after getting the "curse of wendigo" that made him crave endlessly of human flesh. Thats it thats the character LoL

    • @rogersebastian690
      @rogersebastian690 Год назад +4

      @@luiousy7329 that's certainly one interpretation... but i really must disagree here. being fed mischa is one element of his backstory that makes his character so compelling and mysterious, but also one that is purposely left vague, cf."nothing happened to me, I happened". he doesn't crave human flesh, hell, that's the sickest part of him, he sees the people as ordinary slabs of meat--except he gets a twisted pleasure out of feeding them to other people. mischa is his catalyst for his "revenge against God" as you put it, the collapse of morality and goodness and the replacement with his petty cruelty, but her consumption isn't plaguing him to continue eating other humans.

    Great analysis/discussion! I disagree on some points but agree on others.
    1. I would say Will focusing on Abigail is very in character, ala the stray dogs and him attaching to mistreated victims. I believe him feeling 'paternal' is just a struggle in his attempt for normalcy. Of course, his connection with Abigail consists mainly in his head, which is kinda funny to think about.
    2. The 'chess-master' moves never took me out of the show because everything by that point was so hyperrealistic. Understood why it could be a lil' bit too much, but it was one of my favorite plot twists.
    3. Fully agreed with Mason! He was a wonderful foil to Will and Hannibal.
    4. A easily missed thing about S3 Alana is that bone marrow got into her blood after the S2 finale -- leading her to act differently. In S3A, she is a combination of a lot of different characters from the books, and her character does not benefit from that. I prefer her in S3B more than S3A, where I feel like they finally got a grasp on this 'new, traumatized' Alana.
    5. Jack Crawford is underrated. He's excellent.
    6. Chiyoh is definitely a weird character to me. Introducing a bare glimpse into Hannibal's past with her just raises much, much more questions.
    7. Bedelia is an interesting character to me. She is curious and manipulative and arrogant yet not completely devoid of morals.

    Many of the decisions that were made in the plotting of this series cannot be understood without understanding its relationship to the books. The makers could not get the rights to Silence of the Lambs, and therefore to the characters of Clarice Starling and Buffalo Bill. The series makers were intent on including everything though, and as it happens they managed to include every single set piece and great line from Silence of the Lambs in the Hannibal series by giving them to other characters. Some of the scenes and characters whose presence seems inexplicable are there because they were in one of the books -- Chiloh from Hannibal Rising, and Dolarhyde, Reba, and Freddie Lounds from the original Red Dragon. If they had more time they might have split S3 into two more seasons, but after even that imaginary S4 I can't see the series continuing; they had thoroughly mined, sifted, and used all of the source material, and there really wasn't a lot of original stuff in there; almost every scene in the entire series was homage to something that Thomas Harris wrote in the novels.

    Someone once said this show was like...elevated camp, and I think that might describe it perfectly? It's beautiful and well written but also crazy as hell.
    I think Chiyo was meant as a nod to Hannibal's past movie wise. I'm unsure of in the books, but in the movies, he had a Japanese family member. So I think that might have been it? While it is icky that they killed off one of the women of color on the show, it's a free for all and a lot of people die, not just woc. The fandom was upset because we got to know Bev and love her, coupled with the fact that she was one of the few people of color. So it was a mix of things in my opinion. I've been sniffing around the fandom for a few years and have seen many takes on it, though.
    Will and Hannibal's relationship was one of the most fascinating and beautiful things about the show. Watching them blur together and change each other was just *chef's kiss*! I wanted more, but mostly to see how things could have progressed further. It's obvious that Hannibal comes to be in love with Will and to see how that could have continued to play out as Will explores what HE feels in return past kinship would have been nice.

    Why was 6 afraid of 7? It's a fairly common question, mostly because when people see 6 and 7 next to each other, it doesn't really make sense. 6 is large, muscled, and trained in multiple martial arts, while 7 is fairly average, physically, and short. However, 6's fear of 7 has its roots in childhood. See, 6 and 7 grew up together, and for a few years, they were best friends. But then 6 kissed 3, and they became childhood sweethearts. 7 secretly had feelings for 3, so 7 decided he needed to destroy 6 to win 3's affection. He started subtly, undermining 6 whenever possible with passive aggressive comments and compli-sults. But over time, things got much more insidious. 7 started messing with 6's performance in school, bringing down his grades and turning teachers against him. Even worse, 7 became great friends with 6's parents and slowly turned them against their own offspring. At night, 7 would sneak into 6's bedroom, and whisper depressing and hopeless things into his ears. Every time 3 was around, 7 would pants 6 and make fun of his genitalia, or try to body shame him in other ways. However, 3 was both smart and compassionate, and saw through 7's schemes, sticking with 6, trying to counter 7's psychological tear-down with compliments and friendship. Finally, 7 decided that he would never be able to win 3, so he drugged both 6 and 3, taking them to an abandoned cobbler's hut on the edge of town. There, he proceeded to torture and maim 3, forcing 6 to watch in horror, unable to do anything to save his sweetheart. 7 didn't kill 3, but instead, put her in a semi-vegetative state. 7 cleaned the scene of his prescence, then called the cops, having 6 blamed for 3's condition. 6 was sent to prison, believing 6 was guilty, 6's parents fell into a deep depression, eventually committing suicide over what they believed 6 had done. After serving 17 years of a 30 year sentence, and getting out on good behaviour, 6, now muscled and skilled as a fighter, thought he might get revenge on 7. But when he finally tracked down 7, he found out that 7 had installed a micro-bomb into 3's body, and should he be killed, the bomb would automatically go off and kill 3 as well. And though she was still in a mostly fugue state, 6 couldn't bring himself to hurt her any further, and decided to try and move on with his life. However, being an ex-con, it was difficult for him to get a job. 6 finally found employment at a diner, which 7 then bought, and proceeded to again undermine and toy with 6 at every turn. 6 tried to find employment elsewhere, but 7 contacted any potential employer and soured them against 6. 6 finally realized that no matter what he did, 7 was going to try and ruin his life, and he resigned himself to living as a broken, lonely man, never able to stand up to the depraved, amoral 7.

    I haven't finished the last season but not bc I was getting bored but bc I didn't want it to end, I love this show so much. Two equally compelling leads with super fascinating relationship between them and gorgeous cinematography!

    I'm so happy you used Lil Friendys at the end. Those videos might be my favourite thing about season 3, and I can't think of Will Graham without saying "Willgrim" in my mind, just like Hamibal does.

    I found your channel with a shared Love/Hate of Dexter.
    But I love your love of Hannibal. It’s one of the best shows I’ve binged this year. I’m sorry I waited so long….but I’m glad I didn’t have the long wait between episodes and seasons.
    Thanks for the laughs. 🤓👍

    Tumblr and Twitter forcing such a major change only in season 3 seems hard to believe. Chances are they already had tentative plans at least that far for a successful series.
