Richard Boone, at 11:45 : "I'm waiting for my laugh interpreter on my right to tell me what that means." He acknowledges how good Arlene is at understanding the audience's reactions...as several of us have been noting in these comments all along. It's great to hear him praise her for it within the show itself.
Most older people are ready to move on because the changes become overwhelming. It happens to everyone who survives to old age. You just can’t fix the mess
I really needed something extra fun to watch today after suffering through the 2024 Presidential election results... a day that will go down in infamy. 😞
I was raised in the sixties and seventies and the idea of taking dancing lessons was about as relevant as charm schools for girls. I do think, now, it would have done me a lot of good in so many ways. I'm glad that I grew up when I did, but we threw out too many of the nice things in our cultural revolution.
The Front Page was, (after being a 1928 Broadway play and a 1931 film that morphed into the 1940 film "His Girl Friday") a 1949-50 TV series that ran 18 episodes, three of which are in the Paley Center but apparently none on the internet. John Daly played Walter Burns but Richard Boone did not play Hildy Johnson. He was another character called 'Wilson' in 10 of the episodes. There is a 'Wilson' in the 1928 play and the 1931 movie but not in the 1940 and 1974 films. I pulled up the 1931 film on You-Tube and Wilson is one of the other reporters at the jail.
scary to think that betty white was my age when she appeared here. I tend to think of myself as old, or at least past my youth. and yet how many different worlds did she live in after being 38 in 1960.
PS Who wiped the chalk board clean? And what a pity they did not keep the Mystery Guest signatures! Store them. What a catalogue of the Famous. What an Autograph book. What a Price today...
Its funny, because when john Daly says he "want to be fair", he really IS fair, but in a way that demands a quick, clear state of mind by the panelists, and that's not always easy.
SuperWinterborn I think I know what you mean. Sometimes he's teasing about it, but many times he is sincerely trying to be fair, but the panel doesn't always see it that way at the time.
SaveThe TPC Exactly! :) He HAS to do it that way, or else he would give too much away, and if he didn't try, they would all search in a totally wrong direction! (Hey! I'm still wondering what the "TPC" in your username means? (I've asked you once before)
Totally agree-- although in rare cases, very rare cases, I think it can be said he does mischievously mislead the panel on purpose. But 99% of the time, what he says is very accurate, just impossible to decipher for the panelists who can't yet understand what hair splitting distinctions he's making!
Betty was 37 here if I did the math right. Young, certainly, but she had already been in television more than ten years at this point. If her Wikipedia article is correct, she was nominated for an Emmy in 1951, which is more than 20 years before her first appearance on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, almost 35 years before The Golden Girls, and almost 60 years before she hosted Saturday Night Live and starred in Hot in Cleveland. The length of her TV career is impressive. In fact, if anyone ever does a remake of the Back to the Future movies, they should show the characters watching Betty White on TV in 1955 (Life with Elizabeth), and in 1985 (The Goldern Girls), and in 2015 (Hot in Cleveland).
Mr. Hanley was Louis B. Mayer's secretary, and then Mike Todd's, before he was Miss Taylor's. (Taylor pretty much inherited him from Todd, in that 'My husband has just died and I need to deal with 5,435 details and can't think' kind of way.) He died in 1970.
Hi, juliansinger, leaver of great comments! I have something I want to ask you that I'd rather not ask publicly, but there doesn't appear to be any way for me to send you a private message via RUclips (the messaging system gets worse and worse all the time). Since you do all this research on the contestants on your own, presumably because you enjoy it, I might have a good use for your talents for a long term, pretty significant project that's underway (I've already announced it in the Facebook group, but not on RUclips): A new book on WML that I'll be editing, to be published next year. If you have any interest in participating, I'd love to hear from you. If not, don't give it another moment's thought-- just please keep leaving the comments!
Ah? Yes, I saw that, about the book. Sounds like a great opportunity. Seriously, I just get all the various information via the web. But if you think I'd still be useful -- sling me an email. julian3 at that gmail place.
Its interesting how some people (like the second contestant) give some thought to their signatures. You see that among the glitterati but not so much with "folks". Among famous people I've seen signatures all the way to the most elaborate (Liberace and Jimmy Durante come to mind) to Richard Nixon's almost flat line when he was amongst the Watergate scandal (reflecting his mental and emotional state, one could see very well). Me? I makes my X, Ma, and collect my regular check.
Really?! They didn't know Elizabeth Taylor's Secretary? Come on! By Name if not by sight, surely. The 2 Ladies on the Panel saw the fellas out but then seeing how well both look here it's not surprising. Go Girls!
I do believe you're correct this time. There have been a couple of videos where people have thought they spotted her without the heart necklace, but it just turned out that it wasn't very visible in most shots. This time, I think you've found one where she's not wearing it. My guess is that it just wouldn't have looked right with the other necklace, too. Interesting!
What's My Line? & Stephanie McCoy I have noticed that during the past several months worth of episodes, there have been several times that Arlene was not wearing her heart necklace. In some episodes you can see it peeking out beneath a larger necklace, but in some of these "recent" episodes, I don't think she was even wearing it under the larger, more elaborate necklaces, and it is obvious that she's not wearing the diamond heart in this episode. Previous dates that I don't think she wore the heart necklace include Oct. 11, 1959 (& it at least wasn't visible on Oct.4, 1959 either); Nov. 15, 1959 (in which she's wearing a teardrop-shaped diamond pendant with a pearl necklace), Jan. 3, 1960 (though the much larger necklace she has on could possibly be covering the heart completely), Feb. 7, 1960 (I think it's the same necklace as Jan. 3, but we get a clearer view of it); Feb. 21, 1960 (though it could be tucked beneath the high neckline of her dress); March 6, 1960 (her even larger necklace here would hide the heart completely, even if she were wearing it). If you're so inclined, take a look and see what you think. (Am I nuts to be paying such close attention to this stuff? ...Probably! :p) Oh, and there is another episode from within these same few months (I forgot which one & don't want to go back to look for it again), in which I think she is wearing the heart necklace together with the same necklace she has on in this episode.

Ho! Ho! I just watched the syndicated show in 1972 that had Betty White as the mystery guest. She used a squeaky voice and fooled the panel. But, by then the panels were no match to what this show has over its 17 years.
Or the stereotypes about gender roles in the 1950s came later on and these shows are like a time capsule that dispels many of the myths. Women weren't nearly so oppressed in the 1950s as the feminists made out. Nothing like making people feel marginalized and victimized to rally them to your cause..
a random question...Did Arlene and Dorothy ever have the chance to sit next to each other? Also, i love seeing Arlene and Betty on the same show together :)
I don't think they ever did. there was times that there were three men instead of the boy girl order, but I never seen the women sit next to each other. Betty talked about Arlene in one of her books saying how sweet Arlene was in the behind scenes when she appeared on this show. Arlene was on Password against Betty couple of times before. I kinda think Betty, Alan and Arlene was friends at some point. : )
Stephanie McCoy aw, that's so sweet! did betty say anything else about arlene? or more of an aside as far as her guest appearances? i do love betty and arlene's appearances on Password together. They both are quick witted and so charming. and i'm pretty sure they were all friends. i saw a description that betty was interviewed for the documentary made about arlene. shame they never let dorothy and arlene sit next to each other. they were cute when they passed notes to each other or needed some girly help.
Lorna Badeo Not much else I read about in her Betty's book except when she was reminiscing about games shows and how Arlene was the first woman to be a tv game host because even Betty was a game host. But to go along what she said about Arlene behind scenes, She liked everybody, Bennett, Dorothy, Daly, and was super happy about appearing on the show because she religiously watched What's my Line. But she excluded Arlene out of everybody and seemed to talk about how nice she was to her when she was a guest panelist for the first time. She also talked how the other panelist was somewhat more serious than Arlene.
Betty on the panel! Awesomeness!
I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!!!
Most of it Absolutely Lovely. (It) Just Confuses and Puzzles me WHY they hired someone as rude and pompous as Q. Lewis .. 😬😕😐😬😬😬🤢🤷♂️🤷♀️🤦♂️🤦♀️🤦♂️

Boone adds so much to the show
Betty White looked great. Richard Boone always had that tough-guy look to him on the outside but probably a softy on the inside. Thanks for the video.
I always enjoy my daily Daly!
I do too.
Wellk he, Daly, hasn't been around to "enjoy" since 1991.
It’s so pleasant to see Betty White so young! We can see all those mannerisms that started so early in her career!!
Wow it's so weird seeing Betty White so young it's kinda fascinating how long she's lived today must seem so weird compared to those times
Most older people are ready to move on because the changes become overwhelming. It happens to everyone who survives to old age. You just can’t fix the mess
I bet she went STRAIGHT to heaven when she died...LOVELY Lady!
betty and arlene looked absolutely fabulous, both such gorgeous ladies!
I really needed something extra fun to watch today after suffering through the 2024 Presidential election results... a day that will go down in infamy. 😞
Stunning Betty - And quite the player too! (And the only one still alive as of July '15)
GodsFavoriteBassPlyr -- and sharp as a tack at age 93, too.
and as of March 10, 2021...
6 Years since this post and Betty White is still ALIVE at 99 yrs of age
Rest In Peace Dear Betty
Betty White passed 12/31/21. 99 years young getting ready to celebrate 100 on January 17th. Gone but not forgotten
I grew up in the 60s in a small town and every Friday in PE was dance lessons 7th -11th grades.
Betty White and Arlene are both so GORGEOUS!!
Arlene never looked lovelier than on this episode. She was 52 years old here (born October 20, 1907).
Rest in peace Betty White, 99 years old nye 2021.
When it comes to a man making a great impression it’s hard to beat Richard Boone.
Richard Boone seemed very refined.
The Front Page was, (after being a 1928 Broadway play and a 1931 film that morphed into the 1940 film "His Girl Friday") a 1949-50 TV series that ran 18 episodes, three of which are in the Paley Center but apparently none on the internet. This show is so funny because it is wholesome. It doesn't need gratuitous grossness to achieve a gag.
and everything comes from kindness(for me)
Dang it. They are pre-empted the following week. And I was looking forward to seeing the show that aired on my 9th birthday. I guess that's show biz.
scary to think that betty white was my age when she appeared here. I tend to think of myself as old, or at least past my youth. and yet how many different worlds did she live in after being 38 in 1960.
The idea if John being an actor is intriguing .
I couldn't agree with you more

SaveThe TPC Thank you very much! I'll check the links out, when I find time for it. I'm curious. :)
Richard Boone seems like he was a nice person, unlike so many of the celebs on here.
A young Betty White! Good Lord. Allen Ludden was still in the future.

Yes he was. How wonderful
Betty White now 99 on to 100 !!!
First contestant reminds me of John Inman in TAKE A LETTER MR. JONES

17:17 “do you have a tool chest.. tool kit” 😂

Man, those ladies dressed so elegantly.
Arlene Francis was a smart cookie. She also had a quick wit.
Awwww, Betty! Always such a wonder! Love you!
Is Betty White the only panelist from the 1950-1967 WML who is still alive in 2021? She's the only one I can think of.
Woody Allen?
Dick Cavett was a panelist in 1966.
Now in this episode Arlene isn't wearing her heart necklace. I'm sure of it. Unless it's obscured by the other necklace again, lol.
I do believe you're correct this time. ELIZABETH TAYLOR'S SECRETARY
EXTERMINATOR
This episode puts to rest the myth that Arlene Francis never took off her heart pendant.
I learned dancing from Arthur Murray.
But it was more fun with a girl.
What Game Show WASN'T Betty White on?
Bette was hot! glad she's still with us - pls another 20 yrs

What is that sound at 15:31? very odd it sounds wheezy.
I think that's Bennett's laugh.
