Not only does it take outstanding actors to roll with their own mistake, it also takes outstanding actors to go along with it without breaking character, or ruining the scene from the unexpected alteration.
Another Star Wars one: In the scene where Luke and Han are disguised as stormtroopers and escorting a "captive" Chewie to the prison cells, when Luke says, "I can't see a thing in this helmet." Mark was actually speaking out of character to Harry, not realizing the cameras were still rolling.

Fun fact - I was an animator for Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. In one of the shots where Anakin and Obi Wan are fighting some droids on Grevious' ship, I had one droid bump into the back of another as they were both paying more attention to the fight. I proposed it to my supervisor, who ran it by George, and he liked the idea, so it's in the film. Not an homage to the head bump, just thought it'd be fun.
True, Chris Pratt fumbled the orb on the 1st take and Gunn loved it, so he decided to add it to the script. What you see in the film is not the 1st take though. Pratt filmed that scene multiple times. Watch the motion of his hand and arm and you can tell he is inentionally trying to drop it.
It's such a perfect character moment though. Here's one of the most delicate artifacts in the universe that could wipe out entire planets and he just casually drops it on accident 😂
Even Chris Pratt has said that the fumbling you see in the final film was scripted. In fact, Chris Pratt admiited that when he very first fumbled, it wasn't accidental, he was trying to be funny and did it deliberately. It "backfired" in that the director liked it so they added it to the script.
Martin Sheen did something similar in Apocalypse now in the opening scene where he punched the mirror, then sat on the floor naked covered in blood. He was drunk as s**t and wasn't supposed to punch the mirror.
Yeah he was supposed to slam his hand on the table but instead smashed a wine cup and cut his hand badly yet he remained in character and yelled his lines as if nothing had happened, very good actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
Tom Felton is easily the most underrated actor in the HP series. Dude gets overlooked, mainly due to the amount of legends that are in the cast (i.e. every adult character with dialogue)
Viggo Mortenson in The Two Towers after finding the dead Orcs that took Pippin and Merry. He didn't realise the helmet was not a fake one, but a proper steel one and very heavy.
There is one more from Harry Potter. In Chamber of Secrets when Lucius says: “Let’s hope that Mr. Potter will always be around to save the day.” Daniel Radcliffe (Harry) wasn’t supposed to say a thing. Instead he improvised this line out of nowhere: “Don’t worry. I will be.”
The Cleavon Little "flub" actually has a touching story behind it, according to behind the scenes interview Cleavon came into shooting that day in a rather down mood after enduring a particularly bad streak of racist treatment. Mel Brooks saw this and went to Gene and was like "Gene you have to do something to break him out of this funk" and Gene being Gene more or less ad-libbed the above scene to make Cleavon crack up.
Love stuff like this, discovering how spontaneous actors can be while in the moment. Sometimes an actor can get flustered in front of the camera or on stage. You never know what’ll happen in a performance, so you have to roll with it.
I kind of wished you included Biggus Dickus from Life of Brian. None of the guards knew the lines for the scene they were filming, and were strictly told to keep a straight face all throughout. So when Michael Palin said that he knew a good friend named Biggus Dickus, they struggled to contain their laughter, and couldn't keep a straight face. "He has a wife you know. You know what she's called? Incontinentia. Incontinentia Buttocks." Everyone ROFLMFAO
Finally got on that ride at Universal Studios in Florida, I thought it was terrible! Thankfully because I went during the week in January I didn't have to wait in line but it wasn't worth the non-wait either.

Viggo Mortensen kicks a helmet that broke his toe in LOTR The Two Towers 04. Donald Glover Slip in The Martian 05. Tom Cruise kick a stunt double in the neck (M:I 2) 06. You forgot that scene where Heath Ledger was playing the Joker, dressed as a nurse and in the scene he was activating explosives but the special effects guy failed to activate the last charge so Heath refuses to brake character keeps pushing the button on and on till the charge actually blew, everyone thought it was planned but it was a blooper that Heath Ledger turned into a epic scene. RIP Heath Ledger (1979-2008).
Seriously? DiCaprio hurting his hand... AGAIN?! I feel like Charlie Brown with the football with these lists. I always fall for it and watch. And the damn clip is always on it!!
*Leo hurts his hand, but keeps going.* Crew Member: Uh, sir, shouldn't we cut? Tarantino: *in an intrigued tone* No, no. I wanna see how this plays out.
Funny thing about Zoolander is,Ben Stiller is also the director of the film,so for him to forget his own lines in a film he both directed and starred in is hilariously ironic.Good job to David, for staying in character!
The result of the lineup scene was more than just comedy gold. It told volumes about the characters, how they feel about authority, how unshaken they are by the pressure from the police, how quickly they bond as fellow criminals, etc.
1:09 Chris Pratt has said that he actually meant to do that, he said something like "it's easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission sometimes"
Thomas Mitchell in "It's A Wonderful Life" tripped over a trash can off stage making a huge noise but covered it with "I'm alright, I'm alright" and they kept it even with Jimmy Stewart laughing.
Monty python could literally have a full list of its own, but my favorite is from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. When the actor playing "Tim the Enchanter" was introducing himself, it was supposed to be some long complicated name. The actor forgot and just said his name was Tim in a slightly questioning tone. Absolutely hysterical!
One I thought was a good one came in Bride of Chucky where Jenifer Tillie was carrying the Chucky puppet when the puppeteer decided to have Chucky cop a feel getting a funny reaction out of her.
Fun fact: in the new Star Wars canon, the Stormtrooper who bonked his head was with the same group of stormtroopers on Tatooine that met up with Luke and Obi-Wan. When Obi-Wan did his Jedi mindtrick on the StormTrooper Commander, The effect was felt on all the stormtroopers, including the one who bumped his head later. Obi-wan did the trick with ease because all the Stormtroopers were tired and wanted to leave the scorching heat. Later when the Stormtroopers called back to the Death Star, that same Stormtrooper was starting to feel The side effects of the mind trick. Finally thinking to himself that those were indeed the droids that they were looking for, but he was to tired and exhausted. He was just about to call it a day until the leaders of the Death Star announcements that there were intruders on the Death Star, so he him along with other stormtroopers rushes to to their new mission. And then he bangs his head. BONK. the bang made the side effects worse and he completely forgotten about the droids. Later he was ordered to keep guard of the security room where Luke, Obi-Wan, Han and Chewie were last hidden. He was the one who allowed 3PO and R2 to leave the room. So he found the droids twice and let them go again. The same stormtrooper later died when the Death Star exploded. Talk about bad luck.
I know this list is full of more famous actors, but in While You Were Sleeping, the paperboy falls off his bike, and they kept it in, and it's so so random, and incredibly funny. Apparently the actor broke his wrist which sucks, but a noble cause. As it's comedic GOLD how they keep it in.
Laurence Olivier also sliced his hand in "Sleuth" - he kept going but quickly dropped his hand out of camera range. When they stopped, he held up his hand, covered in blood.
An early goof that made the cut in Zoolander is where Derek storms out of the venue after losing to Hansel, he turns left before descending a stairway, which contradicts the running theme of his character that he cannot turn left (except near the end).
At the end of the opening credits of American Graffiti, "Toad" (played by Charles Martin Smith) tries to park his motor scooter in front of the drive-in restaurant, but it unexpectedly lunged forward and hit the outside wall of the restaurant. You can see Smith trying to keep his balance when that happens, and George Lucas kept that in because it was so funny and so fitting for his nerdy character.
How about Viggo Mortensen breaking his foot in "The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers" when he kicks the orc helmet after Aragorn, Gimili, and Legolas come across the remains of the orcs and they think Merry and Pippin were killed with them? The scream Mortensen lets out after kicking the helmet is a real scream of pain from breaking several bones in his feet.
I always notice two things from the original Ghostbusters. When they first summon the Staypuft Marshmallow man, Stantz says "It can't be!" and the exact same audio plays twice. (I guess that's technically an editing error.) There's another scene where Spengler, Stantz, and Zeddemore are discussing psychokinetic energy and twinkies in the basement as Stantz and Zeddemore have a cigarette. Zeddemore reaches for the lighter but Stantz is already using it before passing it to him.
Before Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Sheen accidentally cut his hand on a mirror and it was left in the film Apocalypse Now. The crew was scared and wanted to stop filming, but Martin Sheen, who was drunk, insisted they keep shooting the scene.
In the original Blade Runner, Daryl Hannah slipped in rainy weather and smashed her arm through a car window. She has a scar for it and the scene remained in the movie.
Watch Maverick, James Garner is delivering the rules of the poker game, he shows he has the only gun on the boat and he tries to put it back in his holster but he drops it. The whole cast is laughing hysterically and James Coburn is looking back like "Are we still rolling?" It was funny as hell
just actors mistakes of cinematic fun and getting a good laugh of a great video, this is a really good list of Mistakes That Were Kept in the Movie as it hard to pick the best one of the list.....but didn't know Al Pacino Scent of a Woman falling down on a garbage can was a mistake, but also too their were some mistake takes in american graffiti that were keep in the film
*Speaking of Star Wars, there's the scene in ESB where one of the stormtroopers who brings Han Solo to the Cloud City prison cell almost loses his helmet from Harrison Ford's arm. He just continues with his comrade and leaves the prison cell as if nothing happens, but you can see the hair on the back of his head when he exits.*
Black Dynamite; there are several gaffs made that were left in the film because those types of films would have mistakes in them. A guy opens the car door too far and it gets stuck on the grass. Another guy steps out of his vehicle, but he forgot to put the brake on and had to go back in to stop the car.
I love the Monty Python one where Tim the Enchanter was supposed to have a long stupid name. But the forgot the name and paused then said "Tim?" LoL that one was great
Where is the moment when Captain America (Chris Evans) had his serum injected gets out of the "pod" and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) touches him?. Something she acted out of impulse.
The Uruk Hai actor's sweaty hands actually throwing a dagger towards Viggo and he bad-ass deflecting for real. Totally accidental, and totally in the film raw and uncut.
Even though it's an older film, they should have mentioned Dustin Hoffman in Taxi Driver. They were filming on location in NYC. As he was crossing a street he was narrowly missed by a speeding car. I'm sure his reaction wasn't acting, but they kept rolling and he ad libbed and picked up the thread, and they went on with the scene. This unscripted event became one of the signature scenes in the film.
Forgot one! When Robin Williams slips in The Birdcage as they are trying to prepare for Val's mom to arrive. Funny and went perfectly with the hectic moment.
What about the part in Wayne's World when Mike Myers couldn't keep a straight face during the scene where Wayne and Garth were laying on top of the car?
That was more improvisation. Dana Carvey said something funny when the camera was on Myers, and Myers started laughing because of that, and they then wrote in the line about Bugs Bunny to connect with Myers' laughter.
They should've used the scene in harry potter and the chamber of secrets at the end when Jason Isaacs improves the line "Let us hope that mr. Potter will always be around to save the day." Then looks back at Daniel Radcliffe before leaving Dumbledore's office. Then Daniel Radcliffe responds with "Don't worry, I will be." Wich was also improved. Jason said that Daniel did such an amazing job improving that line, it gave him chills.
Ben Stiller IS oftenly getting away with mistakes in films without even knowing it when he is the director or not, EVEN when he utters which I like to state his favorite catchphrase: "I can handle this."
In pirates of the Caribbean, cant remember which one, Johnny Depp (Captain Jack Sparrow) singing "i got a jar of dirt" was actually unscripted. the reactions to the actors was actually real. Cracks me up all the time when i watch it.
Very surprised you people didn't point out the other mistake in Star Wars IV, where Luke Skywalker shouts "Carrie! Carrie!" instead of Leia once he returned to the hangar after destroying the original Deathstar as well.
It is extremely underrated. I’ve been scrolling for a bit and this is this first outsiders related comment I have seen. Actually it’s one of my favorite films and was very happy to see it mentioned here 😁
Same! I first read the book back then, and then I chose to watch the movie and it was amazing. Then I got the chance to read and watch the movie again with my English class many years back. I was really surprised many of my former classmates did not hear of that movie. It had such quite a star studded cast! And directed by THE Francis Ford Coppola. It deserves more recognition!

Donal Glover Slip in The Martian

Another guy steps out of his vehicle, but he forgot to put the brake on and had to go back in to stop the car.
I love the Monty Python one where Tim the Enchanter was supposed to have a long stupid name. But the forgot the name and paused then said "Tim?" LoL that one was great
Um Han Solo saying “I know” to Leia
It’s kinda of iconic....
Hope everyone has an amazing end to the week 😌❤️
You too❤️
chris pratt always sounds like him self in his acting
I am surprised the lil girl getting hit with the counter door in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, candy man scene wasnt in
Omg the ludacris one 😂
matt dillon number 5 has to be hands down the funniest...his legs actually freeze in the air for like 2 secconds hahahaha
How did the scene from It's a Wonderful life not make it on here? it's so iconic
Ben Stiller IS oftenly getting away with mistakes in films without even knowing it when he is the director or not, EVEN when he utters which I like to state his favorite catchphrase: "I can handle this."
5:48 diane is so totally girl next door back then.
I DIDN’T KNOW THAT SCENE FROM A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS WAS AD LIBBED!!!!
In pirates of the Caribbean, cant remember which one, Johnny Depp (Captain Jack Sparrow) singing "i got a jar of dirt" was actually unscripted. the reactions to the actors was actually real. Cracks me up all the time when i watch it.
What about in "The last Samurai", when the dude gets kicked in the balls by a HORSE and stays still? The true heroe!!
In this case I gues the actor would be the horse itself, hu... HAHAHA
Haha, seen the movie a 100 times and never saw that, had to Google it hahaha
Gene Wilder cracking up in Young Frankenstein after Marty Feldman says a line us a classic.
#1 kept mistake: when one of the 3 orange mocha dudes lights a cigarette at a gas station and kills the 3 of them.
Tom Felton was brilliant in that moment.
I feel like you guys just rearrange lists and change the title.
Very surprised you people didn't point out the other mistake in Star Wars IV, where Luke Skywalker shouts "Carrie! Carrie!" instead of Leia once he returned to the hangar after destroying the original Deathstar as well.
The "comedy gods" couldn't have been smiling on Napoleon Dynamite too much, seeing how the movie isn't funny.
That shit looked painful when he cut his hand but his acting kept your attention Fuckin talented actor Leonardo 👏
Every Movie have mistakes, It only judge by its competitor.
Doesn’t matter how good an actor is, there’s always mistakes.
I love how 2 of the honorable mentions had gene wilder
8:34 Is it just me or does that lady in the back look exactly like Michael Myers?
Ngl, I feel like The Outsiders is a underrated movie :\
It is extremely underrated. I’ve been scrolling for a bit and this is this first outsiders related comment I have seen. Actually it’s one of my favorite films and was very happy to see it mentioned here 😁
Same! I first read the book back then, and then I chose to watch the movie and it was amazing. Then I got the chance to read and watch the movie again with my English class many years back. I was really surprised many of my former classmates did not hear of that movie. It had such quite a star studded cast! And directed by THE Francis Ford Coppola. It deserves more recognition!
yes I totally agree, I love the book and the movie so much
Dustin Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy: Hey! I'm walking here!
