The borrowing into English is via French, civiliser, from circa 1568 (the earliest known usage of the past participial adjective in English). Whilst the -ize suffix ultimately traces its etymology back to the Greek and late Latin suffixes, -izein and -izare, respectively, and is very commonly used in certain variants of English for verbs that have been derived through those languages, there is no good or more valid reason why the -ize variant spelling should predominate over the -ise in this case. In British English, specifically, -ise is preferred, and since this is how it first entered English, that’s what I’ll stick with, thank you very much, as I consider the alternative as preferred in American English to be a hyper-correction.
