Hello B-E-A-U-TIFUL People, unfortunately I can’t respond to you all individually with my current schedule, but I just flew back to NYC after traveling non-stop for a good while and spoke about this video’s comments on my star wars live stream today when someone came in to ask about my feedback for this video. Unfortunately, the majority of these girls’ fans mistook what I said. I was in no way laughing at them or being judgy. People bring me videos to react to in order to find out what my constructive critiques and opinions would be from the perspective of an opera singer with 3 degrees from Juilliard. Not just a simple reaction of me sitting and enjoying the music I hear which I could easily do, but is not the primary reason people watch my videos. I apologize if this is not what the fans of these lovely girls wanted to hear, but it’s what my channel is based on and I only meant to give my true opinion based on what I thought they can improve on. I understand that for most regular listeners, the things I brought up may not be an issue, but the comments I made in this video truly reflect a professional take on what can be improved upon. Unfortunately, most singers in the industry don’t get this level of training which I am so grateful to have myself and which my audience appreciates for what it is and why they enjoy my reactions so much. I strive to pass this training on, ESPECIALLY to the younger incoming singers who are already at such a high level of talent and can easily implement the things I bring up. The critiques or praises I give allow my viewers to understand why they love or may not love something they hear. If these girls came to me for a lesson or a coaching for example (which I do very frequently and love to do) I would have fixed/worked on everything that I mention in this video. I’m sorry this came off the wrong way in my video. I truly appreciate these girls putting out beautiful music and singing together in such a wholesome way and look forward to listening and reacting to their future work. There is no need to “call me out” or come after me with harsh comments as I have no malicious intent behind the things I say. I have had this same problem happen when I commented on Dimash’s diction. He is a professional world class singer traveling the world performing on all kinds of stages, but I gave the same kind of criticism based on my training. That doesn’t mean I don’t absolutely LOVE the work he does and admire him tremendously, it’s just the true feedback that I myself would hear in the professional world. Hope that clarifies and sending much love to you all! 💕

Do you not realise it's not the tone of your reaction it's more the fact that Martha is 12 years old at this time yes TWELVE nowhere near maturity yet and has plenty of time to improve her diction if she so desire's unfortunately i believe she is more interested in equestrian. People took offence at you covering your mouth as though you were laughing at her i know you said the laughing emoji's were beyond your control and due to your video editors but you still could've handled yourself in a far maturer manner. Was your Italian that strong at 12 years old?. For more information Lucy had her first concert the other day in Manchester and blew the audience away and so did Martha when she accompanied her on stage, also Lucy's musical Rosie opens in the West End in the Autumn so she must be able to sing without the use of enhancements as you suggested.

@@mikeyitfc it wasn’t so much a critique of the girls but of whoever prepared them. However as I mentioned in another reply, this video may have been created even before they started gaining any traction at all which would mean it was not coached. Otherwise, the covering of my mouth was purely because I had my classical brain turned on and hearing the same mistake multiple times was hard to process. If I had been at the session, I would have been able to take 3 minutes to review the few tiny things in the Italian that could have been improved to make a huge difference and went about our day. Even I am not perfect, but that was the reason for my reaction in that way. NOT that I was laughing or teasing in any way.

Also she is being trained so it's not gonna be perfect,
Can't you see how Lucy is watching her,
      So yeah
      Lucy is working on her,
Martha did a really good job being in Italian.
The song would be different for now because it's harder.
I think lucky pick this song because it's difficult,
With Lucy busy schedule Martha is just getting stronger
Now go to the climb you'll see just how Martha voices has conquer it,
Lucy did this part for training purposes,
Martha you did beautiful and to hold that breath long like your doing not because your Italian isn't there yet your so good holding your long range,
      So carry on sweetie
      And Lucy

Funny you should say that, two days ago I went to Lucy’s first live solo concert in Manchester, it was professionally recorded I’m not party to when that might be released but at 74 years old I’ve been to a lot of concerts and I can tell you Lucy sounds better live than in her studio recordings oh and Martha (now 14) joined Lucy for two duets including ……. The prayer! You should also consider that Martha’s current career path isn’t music she’s into equestrian events. My other thought is why would you learn all the nuances of a foreign language to go on a weeks holiday ( or sing a couple of songs) I’m Welsh and don’t expect tourists to learn Welsh (with even more rolling of r’s than Italian) to sit on one of our wonderful beaches!

Lucy never ever uses auto tune .In fact I don´t think any one today uses Auto Tune It has become a generic term for cleaning up recordings .All commercial recordings are mixed and matched to a degree its an automatic process and many artists have no say in it. I suspect if you have made any recordings they will also have gone through the system if they are going to be sold as people will only buy something that sounds perfect. Lucy´s voice has been analysed by many voice coaches some opera singers and all have come to the conclusion that she has a beautiful voice And hard as it may sound to you Lucy is one of the few singers who actually sound better live than recorded. This was supposed to be a song reaction not a language lesson .Martha was only 12 years old and never spoken Italian in her life neither has Lucy. Lucy is in fact so good that an award winning song writer and owner of her recording company Chris Broom. Has written a musical for Lucy to star in which is opening in London next year. Chris said he first met Lucy when she was 13 years old and realised then that she had the ability to become one of the greatest vocalists of all time and he has waited until she had finished he education before he launched this Musical.

Although I respect what you say, Lucy and Martha are not trying to sing in English/Italian, perfectly. Thank you Maggie for your very professional review, maybe a little bit “too much” professional, after reading a couple of comments here, let’s not forget these were two still young and not totally professional singers at that time, specially little Martha. But for me and the majority of devoted fans and followers of Lucy’s performances, I think it is exactly those beautiful small “imperfections” of Martha, that sometimes slightly off tempo singing that only Lucy is capable of and makes she so unique, all those things and much more that we love so much. About this song, just to say that I loved the original one with Celine and Andrea, great, perfect and wonderfully executed, but it was Lucy & Martha’s version that gave me wet eyes, not the original one. And the same happens after each and every cover that Lucy has been releasing. I had the pleasure of listening, watching and enjoying live Lucy’s première in Manchester, and let me tell you how it was in one single word, autotunning or not, pitch correction or not, whatever modern technology or not: magical…! Just magical. :)

While you are a professional opera singer who has studied Italian for years, Martha in this video is a 12 year old school girl who has Never sung in Italian before. Also you appear not convinced that they can sing like this "Live." Well they both sang this song "Live" last night in Lucy's first ever solo concert in Manchester UK to a standing ovation which was completely sold out. Her next solo concert is in Tokyo Japan, she's also to star in a brand new musical written especially for her called "Rosie" on London's West End stage. And you're asking if they can sing as well as this "Live?" Are you serious? Being a professional singer your comments almost seem to me to be tinged with jealousy.

I have resisted posting a comment until now in order to cool down and try to offer an objective assessment.
You will perhaps know that this rendition of The Prayer has over 6M views on Lucy's YT channel! This figure has been achieved in spite of the diction flaws that you spent most of your time criticising, along with your erroneous thoughts about the use of 'autotune'. Although you were complimentary about both Martha's and, in particular, Lucy's vocals, the overall impression you left was one of sour negativity for a cover that many believe is the most beautiful recorded to date! Your reaction was dominated by what I believe to be a snobbery derived from your operatic background, rather than an appreciation of what the vast majority of the audience for this song is looking for! This is not high opera and the standards by which you have criticised Martha's diction in this cover are irrelevant for most people - not least because most of the audience does not speak Italian and only appreciate the sound being made. Despite this, I have not discovered a single criticism of Martha's diction from Italian language speakers commenting on this cover - indeed, there seems to be a genuine appreciation of the sisters attempt to sing the song, in part, in a language that is not their native tongue, whilst still producing such a beautiful rendition.
I have not given you a 'Like' for this reaction video and will only do so in future if you can provide a better balanced reaction that is not so influenced by your prejudices! 😮

Hi Lawrence, I just flew back to NYC after traveling non-stop for a good while and spoke about this video’s comments on my star wars live stream today when someone came in to ask this same question. Hope that clarifies and sending much love! 💕

So, I listened to your comments. I read your statement. And I also spent the better part of 3 hours listening to Andrea Bocelli, Celine Dion, Katharine McPhee, Helene Fischer, Josh Groban, Charlotte Church and Pentatonix singing The Prayer. Not one time did I hear an "Opera" version of what you are describing in your comments. When other Italians say that Martha's Italian is impeccable, that is enough for me. David Foster, one of the co-writers, was on piano with Andrea, Celine and Katharine, and he applauded all three singers. Lucy and Martha have never come across as opera singers, as far as I know or have heard. A big difference from Broadway or show musicals. You also had very negative thoughts on Lucy with Hallelujah, I am thinking because it wasn't up to your opera standards. It never was a song intended for opera. Are there any videos of you singing on RUclips that we can listen to and give an honest opinion? I would love to listen to one. Maybe you are jealous of Lucy and Martha's talents? Kind of sounds like jealousy. Now I am off to try to find a song that you sang. More to come!

So you will want to listen to Lucy & Martha live, well you are in luck they held a live public concert last night in Manchester England and the concert was videod from start to finnish so there will be a DVD of the concert and when it is published you will be able to hear them live, one of the songs they sung together is the "Prayer " so maybe the italian will be a little better. I understand your thoughts about the handlers doing Martha dirty. You are correct about the Italian diction. They should have given them both more language training. These two kids are amazing and a little restraint by their handlers would have been appropriate. Also, as much as I love these two young people, I think Lucy is a prodigy (my opinion) and Martha is not. At a very young age Lucy was kicking out Diva songs as good as some of the Diva’s. Check out Lucy’s Diva songs, you might agree. I certainly do not have your ear, I have followed you for years, but I honestly think Lucy is positioned for super stardom. BTW, thank you for being honest in your reviews, amazing work.

Beautiful voices, both of them, I admire and enjoyed them both very much. I hope this is not the case but the production *to me* has a sort of odd sheen to it, and it made me wonder if perhaps there is a *little* studio trickery happening, some minor pitch correction happening to make it all sound absolutely perfect? Note that this is a question, not an accusation. How can we know about this? I ask solely because I hate when producers decide to do this....I am NOT blaming Lucy and Martha if it was done -- their voices are soo good that you just do not have to toy with them *at all*. If there are tiny moments of "imperfection", that no one in the public would notice or care about at all, then let them be. You don't have to make them sound like superhumans. Again, I only ask because the sound quality has an aspect to it that sounds just slightly manipulated to me....I hope I'm wrong. Probable that none of us can know the answer unless we have some inside information. But again, credit to these young ladies for their beautiful singing.

@@mikeyitfc What you write is true. But does it HAVE TO BE that way? No. I am aware that auto tune has been used for a long time but back in the 70's and later (I just googled it -- it was invented in 1997) -- it wasn't used and that is what I'm referring to, it's not a law of nature that it be used. Did you like any recorded music prior to 1997? Do you like the sound of those records? Or do you prefer how they sound today? . For me these posts I'm making are simply indicating personal preferences, not describing "what is" happening out there in the world". I know what is happening and I'm here to say I don't like it. My posts are showing what *could be* -- no auto tune being used -- they're about what I prefer. A studio album will still sound "better" than when you go see someone live just because of how sophisticated the recording equipment is. Auto tune, pitch correction does not have to be one ingredient -- the record will still sound better. That's all I'm saying bro. These girls sing so well, let's hear them as they are, not "correct" any MINOR imperfection. It humanizes them if you leave their voices as they are, people will love them more, in my opinion.
