    My new Sawyer Micro was a nightmare on my SHT hike. I'm now back to using my old Sawyer Squeeze. I learned a lot about my gear being on the trail for 13 days. You must have learned a ton being on the trail for so long. btw I used my Zpacks bear bag as a wind break, but it somehow touched my alcohol stove and melted a small hole.😬 The gorilla tape did fix it!

That would have been your view back in to NC with Mt Mitchell way in the background. Did 39 miles in 3 day hikes and that's about my speed :). 2 15's and a 9 for day 3 - knees were hollering on the downhills by then

    I stopped using bladders for the exact reason you mention - you can't tell how much you have left. The last hike I took with bladder was on the Florida Trail in January a few years ago. All the sources were semi-dry (mudholes), and I failed to ration properly because I couldn't see what was left in my bladder. I wound up having to make 6 miles totally dry.

    Thanks man very informative! I also like the polished long handled spoon! Can't go wrong with the sawyer squeeze! Also the brs stove just blows my mind for $15 i bought one beginning of 2018 and used it a bunch the only issue i had was keeping my pot steady/flat at times but it wasnt really an issue. Well i decided to upgrade to a pocket rocket 2 stove and kit and i really like it but i get way more spray screwing and unscrewing my pocket rocket 2 than i ever did with my brs stove go figure? I thought maybe it was the msr isobutane? I was using a more affordable iso from walmarts like colman with my brs. I still have to A & B them both with different cannisters but for the money the pocket rocket cost me i feel i shouldnt be having the issues im having! Something to keep in mind if anyone is considering the switch. Thanks for sharing your setup Frozen! Stay safe! Hike on!

    Good tip on not using tap water to backlash your filter. Tap water has sediment in it which clogs filters over time. Of course the amount of sediment will vary by locale, but it's best to use bottled water.

  • @ChangWJung-ne9ih
    @ChangWJung-ne9ih 4 года назад

    I suggest a water rocket bottle with the Smart Water cap for your dirty-water bottle. This eliminates the need to unscrew the filter to fill the dirty-water bottle with the air before you can squeeze the rest of the water through the filter. Search RUclips for "4 gram Sawyer's Squeeze gravity water filter system" to see how this system works.

  • @tarawiselove
    @tarawiselove 4 года назад +1

    Great video. As for the filter, I use the Sawyer Micro Squeeze as it has a better flow rate than the Mini Squeeze and is smaller than the Squeeze. I'll start using the reflectix cozy idea for the whole pot rather than just for the lid and a 'hand grip' around the pot. Excellent!
    This is just a recent FYI from the ATC, several state parks, and a bear bag materials supplier: Bears across the country are becoming habituated and will go for hanging gear expecting food. Bear bags are meant to be tied securely around tree trunks, not hung over limbs. Bears tearing into bags and being rewarded with food is what gets bear bags eventually banned from some state parks. The lightest (1.8lbs) and most successful bear-resistant food container solution so far is a hybrid bear canister: an Ursack Allmitey bear bag (Kevlar-based), an Ursack Aluminum liner (so your food doesn't get crushed), and a 12x20 Opsak (helps hide odors), along with an optional 20L dry bag (the Allmitey material attracts humidity and may dampen gear in your pack).

      A lot of people on the trail overtightened the filter. Lightly twist it until it's snug. No need to lock it down. If you overtighten you will bend the o-ring in and it will fall out.

    There are some hammock forums hangs coming in the near future. Any possibility you might show up at any?

      I'll have to check them out and see if I can make them. My ankle is giving me some.minor issues still.

    Flipping that smartwater bottle cap is brilliant! I was just thinking the other day how I could get away with not hauling that bulky syringe on my next backpacking trip.
    Did you do without a windshield for your stove?

      I didn't use a windscreen or my food bag a lot of the time on trail. Instead I would try to set it up out of the wind. But it's good to have the ability to shield it.

    I am wondering if tap water isn't clean water. Well it kind of isn't, but I hope it isn't so bad it can't back-flush.

      It's clean and safe, but it has added chemicals to get it that way.

    Yeah, the stock Sawyer bags are garbage. I wish they'd just stop including them. If you want to go back to a bag, look into the Vecto bags (latest model with the improved seal). So far, mine have been bomb-proof, and they are super easy to fill fast. If you go for the PCT or CDT, you're going to want to be able to carry more than 2L out from a source. In the desert, I'll even bring a 2L dirty bag, a 2L clean bag, and a smartwater bottle, so if I tank up fully, I can leave a source with 5L. Normally though, just the dirty bag and SW bottle.

      If you order on amazon (link above) chose the faucet adapter. It's the cheapest option. It comes with the faucet adapter and the filter. No bags.

      @@FrozensAdventures Yup. I think they should either beef up the bags or stop offering ANY versions that come with them, though. They are wasting materials and adding to landfills with a component that isn't made to last longer than a couple weekend trips (if that). And there's no need for them - the filter fits so many easily obtainable containers.
