Random universe. Just watching this for the first time contemplating picking up an OP-1. Was keen to learn how the radio station sampling function works, and that random radio station advert you sampled from 4:10 features my music. What are the chances? Great tutorial!
Wait... RANDOM UNIVERSE. I used to listen to your music a bunch in my late teens (10+ years ago)!! Man, I haven't heard your stuff in ages. Guess I gotta catch up on what you've been up to! Internet is wild, haha.
Im a guitar player with pretty good gear, i bought this to get inspired and help my writing. this thing is far from a toy. im considering incorporating this into my music once i can get the sounds i want. this is very slick, smooth, easy yet complex. Ive seen people use pedals, so i put this into my axe fx. Im have fun haha

Hi Jeremy, great Video as always. The only thing you could mention to, is how you save the Sample. You can hold the appropriate Key for 5 Sec. to save the Sample . It creates an new File in the Snapshot Folder with the current internal Date and Time. Andre
Finally got the op 1 but been intimidated for weeks but I remembered red means recording covered it like a champ and now I’m soooo stoked. Thank you man 🙏
Nice resampled drum kit there. Random input: One thing I like doing with the in/out or loop start/end is make the pair of points so close together that it sounds like granular synthesis... then you can modulate or knob twist and resample... the rabbit hole can be quite cool.
One thing I’ve been enjoying is using the tape performance buttons like stutter and tape stop, recording to the album, then re sampling the album back to the tape. it’s the only way to actually have those effects recorded on your tape track. Not to mention you can stack effects this way by doing it multiple times with different effects
I don't really get any radio stations where I live, but the FM radio sampler was really useful for getting white noise for a snare sound (good for some NIN-type stuff)
Up until this point I thought recording through the line in was impossible as I had read reports of units getting fried because people used mics with phantom power on the line in. In was worried it would have the same effect. You have brought my original dream use of this thing back to life
Years ago I’d dream about this thing, but at $900 it would stay a dream. Just remembered this thing existed and now they’re over $1300. All I know is pain.
I bought one OP-1 because I found it cool and taught it was easier to use, but now I find it really confusing (absolutely no music background, many terms are new to me), sort of learning photoshop, each option allows you to do so many things. I hope I'll have the willpower to learn to use properly, and if I do, know that it's only because of those wonderful videos you are sharing with us. Thank you for your work and kind regards!
VERY nice overview of the OP1 in your 'splainer vids so far. just going from top to bottom now, just kuz. Next up MOD YOU LATERS. i think ill knit a op1 cozy this thanksgiving break... come here you little....
I had a TE-OP1 for about 2 years. (older version). Sold it because I'm not a tech person, but more of a old school player. All this tech/computer stuff has a deep learning curve, and this is no different. I did make a few songs on it, but you rattle off the features so easily and are so thorough, that I am left in the dust. I do know that I only tapped the surface of this unit. I hated the speaker that was useless and required headphones and crackled when you plugged it in. (Guess they fixed that in the newer units. Loved the digital tape deck being old school learning on analog gear and tape decks. Didn't like a lot of the sounds coming out of it, outdid like I could tweak them. Loved the sampler though I didn't sample stuff very well. I miss the idea of having this, due to its size factor and features, but in the end I am a player who dabbles. I had the Moog Grandmother for a while, and I could make sounds on the fly and came out with so much better stuff, but that is due to the knobs and dials on the thing. It was a physical experience more than a DAW one. I understood why a sound came to be on it more than I could figure out the dang inner workings of the TE-OP-1. The tape deck I used to play in real time, like a player does, whereas if you are more computer-minded, you could get so much more out of this little tape design marvel. It's a work of art. Lovely piece of gear though quite expensive. So, younger crowd will LOVE this and adapt to the computer side and all it's features, whereas my almost 60 year old mind gets annoyed by the deep diving of features and would rather have knobs and sliders to play in real time with a full size keyboard. If my brain could easily figure out all of the features like you have, I'd still own this unit. I am also more of a guitar player or instrument player than computer programmer type. I play piano and guitar. Anyway, just my thoughts. Love your videos as always. If I still had my OP-1 I would go by these instructional videos, albeit slowed down with many stops in the video, because I can't keep up with how fast you go through the features. :) You're a pro at that OP-1, and no one else's videos, and I've seen them all over the years, does as good a job as you do, Jeremy.
It’s been a while since your post but you might try slowing down the playback speed? I speed videos up and slow them down, depending on the instructor and content. I’d encourage you to try again with the OP1. It’s fun once you understand the work flow. I have lots of synths, various brands, and they all take time to learn, especially those that are menu driven but once you know it, you’re good to go.
Nice vid and a nice series. Only thing I think you missed is that you can lift from the tape directly into the sampler (drums or keys), kind of like instant resampling.
All of these tutorials videos are making me really wanna save my money and get this… even tho I had my heart set on an mpc one, which suits me better. But something about these that make me want it.min one of those who definitely don’t see it as a toy.
You can also hook up your OP-1 to a computer via usb and you’ll get a usb symbol in that list of inputs. This way you can also sample anything played on a computer! (Make sure to select OP-1 as your output device)
So can you tune samples? It plays whatever you put into it as “c” so capturing an Ab wind chime goes into c. How do I transpose or tune? Specifically tune by cents? I guess I can resample on something else and dump a c onto it. It would be nice if I could tune it or place the sample.
Hi Red! I made some sampled AIF files for the drum engine. Works perfectly, except that I always have to reconfigure the slicepoints for it to work well with the keyboard .Do you know how I can save the slice points, once I've set them? Thank you
Jeremy, I’ve bought your sample pack, installed them without problems in the OP-1 (yes I paid attention to the files rules as indicated in the .txt). But I can’t find those in the OP-1, any advice? Also copy and paste from a reply you previously gave to someone is ok. And if no reply, I’ll still be happy because you provide so much good content. Thanks!
hello! thanks for the videos. I would like to ask you if you know why my op1 screen shows input and not "to sample". I ve put already a jack in output and input. thank you!
thanks for these tutorials, really useful! I've just put a drum break sample into the drum sampler and chopped them across the keys, but I'd like each note to cancel the previous one - it seems there is no mono mode in the drum sampler?
I noticed you always used the C pad/key to do the sample, but the note was not a C. Subsequently, when you played back the sample on the key pad, the sound made did not match the key. Is there a way to fix this? Your note was an A. If you had pressed the A key pad would it have mapped everything correctly?
yes. whatever key you sample into becomes the root for the sample. So in his case he was playing back an "A" ( as you say) withthe C key, if he went up a half step he would be playing an A-sharp ( even tho the key held down is a C sharp)... good catch....
I understand classic chopped beat sampling but can someone explain keys sampling for me. I’ve never sample “instruments”. Mainly I don’t understand how to use end and loop points effectively?
Is there a way to transpose samples? Like... if you sang your ahhh for the sampler and you sang the note D but you sampled to the key C, could you correct that?
@@RedMeansRecordingThank you! Is there a way to do that that doesn't involve recording the sample to the tape and then recording it back into a sample on the right key? A menu transpose option of some kind?
I've noticed the 'zero crossing snap' in other software as well while editing - what exactly causes or 'is' the 'zero crossing snap'? It's driven me nuts for over 30 years through all the samplers I've used including the first samplers for the early Macintosh computers.
A zero crossing is when the amplitude of the waveform crosses zero and therefore has zero volume. If you make an edit on a zero crossing it's going to start it end quietly. Otherwise there will be a quick jump to the amplitude from zero which will sound like a click.
