We used to sing this song in 1963 in our music lesson at our school in north Manchester. Our teacher Mr Brown was proud to say he knew the man who wrote it. The original first line was gasworks CROFT. We had many crofts near us. They were a plot of land where a building had been demolished and levelled. Often they would build wooden garages for locals to rent. We used to play football and cricket on them.
So many people sing this song and have no idea that it's about my home town of Salford. The gasworks were demolished a couple of years ago, very much against the wishes of Salfordians. A large group of people stood by singing thus song as the demolition continued. Ewan MacColl was the father of ill-fated Kirsty MacColl, had been married to Joan Littlewood and later to Peggy Seeger.
Indeed it was and it does tell a poignant tale. Few people would know either that Ewans real name was James Miller ✌️ The killing of Kirsty was never properly investigated because of people in high places, but the death was reckless at least and possibly manslaughter. 😢😢 Great and legendary artists, as indeed is good time Rod. 👍
@@darrenlloyd4117 smell the spring in the salford wind. Gas works is right near me, well was it was pulled down a few years back it was on liverpool street in salford
Great seeing Rod pick up the guitar and playing it on stage. I've also seen him perform this song in Houston, TX once it was great then too. Thanks for sharing this wonderful delight from 1969. Again a Great performance & wonderful keepsake of recorded time & melodic sound. :)
Hope no one has forgotten that this song was written by the immortal Ewan MacColl, (born in Salford in 1915). Who also wrote "if ever I saw your face".
Actually written in NINETEEN FORTYNINE by Ewan McColl. McColl's best known song was The First Time that Every I Saw Your Face but he wrote hundreds more.
This not the way he did on his first album though. I had that album, early 70's, and didn't know this was a Irish song till years later. The first album version still my favourite.
Oh dear. I like Rod Stewart but definitely not the right song for him. Wonderful lyrics by Ewan MacColl. Shane Macgowan and the Pogues by far the best version.
Sound balance out of sync thats why.Rod couldn'd be heard above the instruments which while they were good they overshadowed the lyrics. That's my thoughts.

Its a shame he didn't give credit to the original author Ewan MacColl way before 1969 , back in the early 50's I think
also sung by #TheDubliners in the early 60-ties, but best interpretation was by #ShaneMacGowan leadsinger #ThePogues in the 80-ties

Yes English song about lovely Salford. Check out LS Lowry's paintings and you'll see why he wrote it
