The ones you are using seem sort of thin. 9?
I really like the 10-52 strings. Meaty bass and you can still do the bends without losing your fingertips :)

They look light you don’t seem to be working that hard and using a light touch. The tone is there whatever they are

I really like this format. It feels like even though you are so far away I can enjoy the guitar with a professor. No "Top 10 Licks" "Top 10 Easiest Chords" Bullshit. Start from basics. Hear what you are playing. Speed is not everything. Feel the music. Enjoy the Guitar. It's also not a whole lot of people watching these. Thankyou very very much

Thanks so much! So nice to hear that.
I wish I can do top 10 or top 20. In my case, once I made 12 jazz guitar licks. But really truth is 3 jazz licks are much more useful that knowing 12!!
So I love 3 Levels or 3 things!! Just like "Triad" 3 is good for me. Root, 3rd, 5th... all equally important!

Actually I have 4 same Squier Stratocaster and I put 8s,9s,10s,11s on each guitars to understand each tone... I brought only this guitar with 8-38 to Berklee. Thanks so much! Choices are great! Everyone pick what they like! That's best choice!!

I agree, just use whats feels right for you. On Rick's video the 8ths come out better in the mix because of the distortion. With clean tones the 8ths are just not cutting it.

I've been using 12s to 54 or 12s to 56s since I first started playing (don't remember exact numbers) and I play in E standard. I play acoustic mostly if that matters. I've also tried 11 and 10s but those strings don't feel as natural to my fingers, as someone whos talent lies in rhythm and harmony the thicker strings give my fingers a lot to work with. Stability. The lighter strings feel like noodles to me because I learned on acoustic with these gauges. It feels like home to me. Also C standard and below using .13s on an electric is super fun for anyone who hasn't tried it. Just.. have someone set up your instrument so you don't destroy it.

Those Squiers sound surprisingly sweet for low cost ceramic pickups, better than most cheap guitars. Also they set up surprisingly easily to play very well too. It’s the law of diminishing returns so a much more expensive guitar is nicer for sure but a good set up and a Squiers hidden potential is revealed

Tomo, you're the best. Guitar philosopher. I'm guessing you're using 8s on that Squire. I switched to 8s last year and it changed my life. It brought me closer to the instrument... if you know what I mean. They sound just as good as the 9s I had been using for years, but they have enabled me to dial back my attack and play in a far smoother manner. I put them on my Tele and an old PRS EG-3. They're magic on the PRS!

One of my favorite things to do when I have time to kill in a music store is grab a low end Squire Strat or Tele and jam on it unplugged. Most the time they are just decent/good, but every now and then you find one that really sings without amplification. Ended up picking up a Tele while on vacation that way it just sounded too good and played great.

Sometimes you get a guitar that for some reason just really rings out those notes. I picked up a late 90s Mexican strat from a pawn shop for cheap and for some reason it just rings out chords so nicely and you can tell the difference when I play it unplugged vs my American standard that just doesn't have that good vibration. It's hard to explain..

I've never tried 8's. I use 9's, almost exclusively, on everything. After watching this and the Rick Beato and Rhett Shull videos, it makes me think I might experiment with some different guages. Rick and Rhett are both pretty great, and I learn a lot from them. I came here from Tyler Larson's channel, Music Is Win. I am glad that he introduced me to you. You have a nice and genuine way of teaching, and you challenge me with new ideas in all of your videos. Thank you for your advanced skills, as well as for all of the simple lessons. I watched the whole thing, I really enjoyed this video. and the strings sound pretty good, I saw those are .8s I have been thinking since Beato's video to use them. I have been using .10s for 4 years now but I think I'll give 8s a go because .10s seems to be too tense for me, bending is not very comfortable, and maybe my funk will be cleaner. I also love your 3 LVL videos but this format is very pleasant and comforting to watch.
I have a lot of material to review before I can buy your book, but I will and then I will probably look your guitar wisdom.
You're right we have to go step by step, de kind to ourselves, but I'm also feeling a bit hasty. Still watching at 16:00 :D I think that this new lighter strings fade omits a very important topic; it's not just about the sound, it's also about the feel and comfort while playing, I played classical guitar way before I even touched an electric one and 9s and lower feel too soft and mushy for me personally. It's not objectively correct, it's just something to keep in mind while discussing this. I feel that being confident with your equipment is a bigger factor in the sound at the end and will effect your playing more that a change in string gauge.

Sure thing Tomo, I have to get to the end so I don't miss anything. Played my Squire Strat forever with 10's. Did 20 year overhaul > bone nut, lock tuners filed frets nice nice. May try some 9's again. No fear.

when I started playing guitar I used 9. Then in 1986 I got 10 and then ended by 11. today I prefer 9 hybrid. thr 9 string set is so comfortable to play and I think it sounds also the best for Fender guitars. the hybrid bass strings give the extra kick to play open strings.

I feel like a good portion of people are so busy chasing tone that they forget to produce a good one with whatever they have at the moment. It's always the guitar, strings, pedals, amps, etc. never the player and those comparison videos people do make it worse.

I don't understand why i did not find your channel sooner. Youre such a great teacher and in every video i get some "wow" information and all makes sense (instead of 95% of videos on YT). I've been playing about 7-10 years (self-taught/youtube) and about 5 years i see just little improvement. I was chasing gear rather than play guitar (i started to make my own pedals, pickups and all sort of "voodoo" to chase "THE Tone"), but as i can see its only about dedication and practising... In this video you play Squier that i had too (from original guitar lasted only body and neck and all parts was changed - that led for some improvements, but you proved that the guitar is only that good as a player) i think it sound really really good and i bet u using 8s. I love strats and i play 10s and when i bend strings in higher positions i have to make my hands work really hard so in near future im planning to swap them to 9.

Tomo, I would watch up to 16 minutes, or 60 minutes. Every one of your videos is a gift to us! But for constructive criticism, I think your format of lessons and discussion for about 15-18 mins and then some playing is really great. It's rewarding to get to see you play freely at the end and put the wisdom into action. Probably many of us watch and/or listen while at work, so the video length is very welcome.
