      Amazing work leaving these links. I wouldn't worry about showing to much running around in town or dungeon diving (how can you have to much dungeon diving?). When you leave these links, people can skip around how they wish. don't forget this is your channel duderino. Peace.

    In regards to your request for feedback - from a novice video editor/art & film student:
    I think you have captured the wonder of watching someone just play a game they enjoy, without being too "on". I like watching even the backtracking and experiencing how you think/function while you play this game. I think any useful critique would be on the technical side of things. Your voice tends to compete with the music, so perhaps turning down the music volume a little would be helpful. I only played for a little yesterday and didn't explore the audio menu, but I am hoping there is a separate slider for music volume and sfx volume?
    For your other questions - I would even go as far as saying don't cut out too much walking/travel. Sometimes just sitting in the silence of watching you move through the world has a calming factor to it. I watched/listened to this at work and it left me with moments to just sit and be with myself, the game's visuals and sounds, and be mentally still. Perhaps it might be a good idea to just let those moments be. I think this could also take some of the pressure off of you, if you feel like you need to fill in silences. Maybe if you find an area to be too "boring", just let yourself be immersed for a second and see where your mind takes you, you can always cut into a new scene starting with "so I was just walking here and I had x thought" kind of thing. Same goes for dungeons.
    Skip to points of interest when you feel it necessary, but otherwise we are here to see your whole journey!
    Anyway, just my two cents. Very excited for Part II! It's been a pleasure being introduced to this game, I never knew it was so expansive.

    • @micah_raygun_
      @micah_raygun_  7 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks for the feedback! Other have agreed with your sentiment to let the less exciting parts of the game remain in the video, which is nice to hear since I want my content to make for a nice, relaxing experience.
      To pick your brain about the audio issues some, this is a battle for me with each video I produce 😔It sounds good when I'm testing and recording, but when I listen afterward is another story.
      I noticed that some of the music was too loud in character creation. Is this the volume you were referring too, or did you notice an imbalance during gameplay as well?
      Thanks again for the feedback, it's so helpful during this time when my channel and my recording/editing skills are in their infancy.
      Edit: yes there are separate sliders for fx / music volume in Daggerfall, just hard to tell which one needs priority. Both categories can be a bit overwhelming based on context.

    • @aluckyheron
      @aluckyheron 7 месяцев назад

      @@micah_raygun_ It was certainly present in character creation, but sometimes also when in towns when you'd be talking with NPCs and talking to us about what was happening/your thoughts. there were also some moments enemies sounds were a tick loud.
      If you are recording using software that allows, I'd consider splitting the mic and game audio recordings into two separate channels and then hitting the game audio with a compressor in your editing software, just to level it out. since you're recording over such a long duration, it can be hard to adjust to an ideal in game volume that remains constant for a couple different reasons, so normalizing by compressing first and then adjusting volume against your mic audio should help.

    • @micah_raygun_
      @micah_raygun_  7 месяцев назад +1

      @@aluckyheronUnderstood! Yeah the audio in these long form videos can be tricky.
      I was actually experimenting with a compressor in post with this video, but it seemed like a "too little too late" situation. I'm using OBS for recording, which allows different inputs for game audio and mic audio, but I'm not sure if I can output to two separate streams. I'll have to look into that.
      Thanks again for the feedback, I'll keep learning as I go. Hopefully I'll soon have higher production quality all around, as audio quality is important for me as a viewer.

    • @aluckyheron
      @aluckyheron 7 месяцев назад

      @@micah_raygun_ if you go to OBS settings > output > advanced (on the dropdown) > recording you can select tracks 1 and 2 for output. then if you click the gears under the "audio mixer" section on the main program window, you can delegate your mic to track 1 and gamecap to track 2, or vice versa. Just make sure to uncheck all the other channels that you aren't delegating them too.
      Then when you go to edit, you should see two separate audio tracks. Hope this is helpful to you!

    • @micah_raygun_
      @micah_raygun_  7 месяцев назад

      @@aluckyheronHey thanks for the tip here! I'm going to work on honing my craft gradually as I continue releasing videos. Implementing these split audio tracks in OpenShot, my editing software, hasn't gone well so far. But I'll figure it out, either by making it work in OpenShot or by biting the bullet and getting some purchased software to use.

    Man, you seem to approach games the same way I do. Roleplaying games are my all time favorite and I have a very high tolerance for what are often considered “outdated” games. Recently just got a PC for the first time in about 15 years after being on consoles and it’s opened so many opportunities to return to games, mod them or try out new ones. Last year I put about 80 hours into the Xbox version of Morrowind but now that I’ve got a PC I’ve set up Daggerfall Unity with mods and Morrowind with mods and it’s been so much fun. Stumbling across your videos just as I was getting into Daggerfall is perfect! Loving your content so far, keep it up!

    I think the audio is fine in terms of levels, but has other (minor) issues - mainly that it seemed off-balance, to the right in headphones?
    Nitpicking aside, I'm loving this playthrough. I'm always down for DFU content but the lean into the roleplaying especially is a nice style. Really captures that nostalgic feeling of old-school TTRPGs and early dungeon crawl video games. Also, please never change the chill narration style. Really refreshing to not have someone shouting in my ears for a change lmao

    • @micah_raygun_
      @micah_raygun_  7 месяцев назад +1

      I think I figured out the audio issue by setting my mic output to mono instead of stereo--not really need of surround sound with my voice anyway.
      Glad you're liking the playthrough so far! These early levels of a DFU ironman game can be every bit as terrifying and unforgiving as an old-school TTRPG 😅

    Cool stuff as always, so nice to just follow along on this adventure! I particularly enjoyed all the 'too-doo-doo-too' that you are humming as you go lol, really reminded me of the good old days watching my older brother play video games when I was too young to figure them out on my own. We used to be too impatient I guess to read the texts inside videogames or even watch the cut scenes, so all of the lore of all videogames we came up with ourselves talking, having recap sessions of all the encounters (which I would now know to have been generated randomly) way past bedtime... Anyways, always looking forward to the next episode as much as anything else you might want to do on Daggerfall or anything else really!

    Taking a minute as you walk around Sentinel to say I've really been enjoying Daggerfall since you convinced me to give it another chance, but the one thing I wish I could find as a mod would be a way to make these streets a bit narrower in the walled towns and not leave so much buffer between buildings. Space inside of a sturdy wall is quite valuable and I think people tend to build up even if they're not wealthy enough for a plot that lets them build very far out; so far in my exploring I've only seen tall buildings that are also very large in footprint and I think that's a missed opportunity. Not out here asking for the towers of medieval Bologna, and I would consider it a win to just vacuum out all the unused space before going crazy trying to optimize new buildings. I just don't want the city that gives Daggerfall its name-and others on par with it-to feel like sprawling suburbs.
    And thanks for showing us how you get started in Ironman, it's been really eye opening to see a successful approach to this game that doesn't rely on breaking either systems or continuity.

    Hello, nice videos. I heard you are a new parent a have a full time job. I feel you there, same. Sometimes it´s hard to find time to put your videos on the background, let alone embark on a grand adventure. I want to complete Daggerfall but I never seem to get on with the main quest. I think the most fun comes from creating a new character, especially editing the advantages and disadvantages. Sorry for gramar or spelling, haven´t nailed down the english, but just wanted to appreciate your style of aproaching adventure and storytelling. Good luck!
    By the way, as someone mentioned, "incunable" comes from the latin, and refers to a book "that was printed in the earliest stages of printing in Europe, up to the year 1500" (from Wikipedia). Don´t know hoy they handle printing in Tamriel...

      Yep my son is just over a year old at this point, which can make free time a bit scarce but that's okay. I also love going through the character creation process in Daggerfall, and the low level adventurer is often a bit more exciting than a high level one since you have fewer resources and threats like paralysis and disease are still very deadly.
      Your English seems great btw, I wouldn't have guessed it was your second language if you hadn't mentioned it. Very glad you found the channel so we could chat. Take care 👍

    Great way to play!
    Some differences between your method and mine:
    1. You don't use the bank loan to buy the horse and starting gear.
    2. I never use the world map until my character talks to someone and asks, "where am I?"
    3. You take the risk of going to dungeons at low level, that's bravery!
    4. I use tedious travel especially if I don't have a horse; it makes surviving travel very hard at low level.

    Hello! Love your videos and very thankful that my YT algorithm is on point with showing me new channels that I’m actually interested in. I never gave Daggerfall any real thought before seeing your video about roleplaying and now I really want to try it (after I finally finish the last 98% of Morrowind lol)!
    I was wondering, when I finally do get around to it do you recommend playing vanilla Daggerfall first, or is modded the way to go out the gate?

      @@Retired_Geek_WomanI hear you and appreciate the feedback. Whether or not we agree with the other comment, the comment at least voiced a reasonable concern that ended up inadvertently teaching me about how to have more control over the amount of ads in these videos.
      Once I realized how frequent they were, I understood that I wouldn't want an ad break every 7-10 minutes in a video, so the golden rule dictated that I dial it back.
      Any money that I get from RUclips is more than I ever expected to get. I hope that by keeping my monetization modest I'll continued to be motivated by my passion rather than being tempted to put out content just for clicks and ad revenue.

    Micah!! I'm so excited to watch this, and so happy to have seen it show up on my recommendations. It is a gift to be able to watch somebody remark on this game who shares such a similar perspective on it. I wish I'd have seen it the day you uploaded it but I was awfully sick over the weekend. So happy you landed on a female Nord by the way, this is precisely the race I almost always play! Sometimes I pick a Khajiit or a Breton, but in Daggerfall those are my main choices.
    By the way, something tangentially related; I managed to get the original version of Morrowind working on my Steam Deck, launched through Mod Organizer 2 and FINALLY figured out how to get MGE XE and MWSE to hook in, something that I thought was impossible after several fruitless attempts. Being able to play modded Morrowind on my handheld with Ashfall and other such mods is a dream come true, it was the "final frontier" of my Steam Deck setup recreating my modded games libraries from my computer. Now I've got my heavily modded Daggerfall Unity (I think around 91 mods last time I checked), and my heavily modded OG Morrowind (over 300 mods, 319 are plugins) on the Steam Deck ready to go and I am in heaven; if only I could express how it feels after having endured so much frustration and the total loss of dozens of hours of work in the past year or so to finally have this running with so far seemingly no problems. I had a few initially (such as Ashfall throwing up module dependencies missing) but they were mostly due to Linux file and folder structure being case-sensitive, an easy but tedious fix.
    Anyway I'm hoping you will be continuing with Daggerfall videos, and I look forward to whatever you decide to share. Take care Micah, I hope this message finds you well.

    • @BriteRory
      @BriteRory 7 месяцев назад

      Oh and after reading the video description; honestly I wouldn't cut anything out. I also don't use the "smaller dungeons" option because it makes leveling up without resorting to exploits a more drawn out ordeal than it already is. Your commentary is enjoyable as it is and if it were my decision to make I wouldn't edit out anything. But perhaps I'm in the minority here so I hopefully am not making a suggestion that is ultimately not to your benefit. As much as Daggerfall is intentionally designed to be something of a fantasy life simulator, I feel that it is in equal measure a dungeon crawler. I adore the combination of open world and dungeon crawler, something that is extraordinarily rare for some reason, at least for games that treat the dungeon crawling with as much detail as the points of interest in the open world, and offer attributes and skills systems to accord with it such as skills like climbing, swimming, listening (acute hearing in Daggerfall), etc.
      The only games that are comparable tend to be turn-based or grid-based, and almost invariably feature a party instead of a single player, from a first-person perspective. The games I adore that match these aspects are Wizardry 7 and 8, Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar, Might and Magic 3 through 8, most of the Gold Box games starting with Pool of Radiance, the later Eye of the Beholder and Bard's Tale games, Lords of Xulima, Wizards & Warriors (the D.W. Bradley PC game), and some of the Shin Megami Tensei games. For games that have a single player and function "kind of" like Elder Scrolls games, I would list Lands of Lore (the first especially), the Ravenloft and Menzoberranzan SSI games, the Quest series, Legends of Valour, Fate: Gates of Dawn (one of my favorites), and Islands of the Caliph.
      Games that are "open" but restricted to dungeon-like environments would include Lunacid, Arx Fatalis, the Ultima Underworld games, System Shock, Anvil of Dawn, World of Aden: Thunderscape, Dugeon Hack, the first Eye of the Beholder and first Bard's Tale, maybe a few others. Games like Daggerfall and Morrowind and exceedingly rare, and the dungeon design of Daggerfall is especially appreciated because they put so much effort into making them truly deep, labyrinthine mazes that mapping and figuring out provides you with a real sense of accomplishment. The later games like Oblivion and Skyrim drastically reduced the importance of dungeons to where the layouts are mostly closed circuits where following different branches rarely is a matter of hesitation because you can be confident you will never get lost. The only major exception to this is Blacklight in Skyrim, but even that isn't particularly difficult to navigate, it is just visually impressive, meanwhile none of your skills effect your chances of survival. Unlike say, Wizardry 7 where your entire party needed to practice swimming and climbing, you needed a navigator to practice map-making, a smith to repair broken equipment, a thief to practice skulduggery, a ranger to practice scouting in order to uncover hidden doors, traps and secrets, someone to train mythology in order to gain knowledge of the creatures you encounter, etc. Daggerfall is really in a class of its own for combining the complex dungeon crawling with a truly open world that involves social domains with factions and such. All the more reason why it is such a shame they continually move further away from their roots with each new iteration.

      Hey glad you found the video! I'm looking forward to alternating between this LP and more of the discussion videos like the ones I started with.
      Wow that's a lot of Morrowind mods! Really great that you were able to get it working on your Steam Deck like that. I actually started replaying MW last night after finishing the main quest in Daggerfall with my ironman character! OpenMW was surprisingly simple to set up and it is sooo beautiful without any making any changes to the game.
      Last time I tried to set up MW I was getting errors when installing Tamriel Rebuilt and Skyrim Home of the Nords, so I'm going to have to deal with that when modding one of these days.
      Btw you're like an encyclopedia with those first person dungeon crawlers lol. I haven't played most of the ones you mentioned even though they're up my alley. I started the Bard's Tale, but got my ass handed to me at the first major dungeon. Idk how to stop my party from getting wiped by dragon's breath lol. Shin Megami Tensei is actually one of my favorite games of all times. The atmosphere, demon summoning, the art and music, all of it is just such a great experience.

    • @BriteRory
      @BriteRory 7 месяцев назад

      @@micah_raygun_ Man, you're talking my language! MegaTen is one of my favorites as well; are you talking about the first Shin Megami Tensei, the one that was on Super Famicom? Or the original Megami Tensei games for PC-88 and such? I love both but the Super Famicom version of Shin Megami Tensei is a damn masterpiece and I am so disappointed that they only ever revisited that style of game a handful of times, especially in the wake of Persona being an international phenomenon. Don't get me wrong I like the first three Persona games (the only ones I've played, though my daughter and wife tell me the newest one is great) and I haven't followed the Shin Megami series itself in years, but those early couple of games are insane and the source material (at least what is available in English) is so brilliant.
      If you ever could use help setting up those mods let me know, I can walk you through Tamriel Rebuilt and Skyrim: Home of the Nords no problem. The Skyrim mod is one I refuse to play without; if only it had the attention the larger project has! Bloodmoon was always one of my favorite parts of Morrowind as it is, so that mod showing Skyrim and Nord culture the way it was in idea during the Morrowind era is such a gift to explore.
      Oh and about my knowledge of these kinds of games, while I'm definitely no expert and there are people way more knowledgeable in that stuff than I am (particularly on the rpgcodex), it is a passion of mine and I've studied the history of the genre fairly intensively. History is my main passion so it just happens naturally for me. The first-person dungeon crawlers are among my favorite kinds of games to play, though admittedly I only get the right mood for them on occasion these days, simply because of how complex many of them are to where relearning all of the rules and such can be overwhelming if that enthusiasm is lacking. But first-person open-world dungeon crawlers? That would definitely be at the top my list of favorite genres, and why I regard Daggerfall so highly. It is so unfortunate that there is no other game truly comparable to Daggerfall, and I don't mean in the sense of scale or anything like that, just the design of a single character first-person dungeon crawler where the dungeons are placed on an overworld map that is open to explore in any order with towns and cities to frequent and gain quests from. Truly the only games that are comparable are Wizardry 7 and Grimoire, but they are party-based and turn-based, so that sense of individual progression is spread out across parties of up to 8. You'd think by now that somebody would have realized how much of a deficiency there is in this domain, yet it remains relatively untouched! I know there are a small handful of indie games currently in development that are somewhat inspired by this kind of game, but truth be told none of the Daggerfall or Morrowind spiritual successor types look very interesting to me, and it is only the few party-based and grid-based games that look decent to me, such as Hibernaculum, The Darkness Below, the sequel to Legends of Amberland, and Mystic Land: The Search for Maphaldo.
      I really like your idea of sharing videos of both your iron man runs and your discussion videos, and very much look forward to them! I enjoy listening to your discussion videos while I work. Lately I've been getting the feeling again to replay the Gold Box games, though I'm still enjoying my Daggerfall and Morrowind mod setups. I actually have big box copies of Daggerfall and some of the Gold Box games, and just last night I pulled out of my chest where I keep all my big box games and guides my copy of Darklands, ever played that one? I love playing those old games digitally while being able to refer to my box copy for the manuals, code wheels, foldout maps and such like, because I grew up in that era and miss the experience of getting to open a game box and become excited reading the books inside while the games installed. Not that I had very many back then, or even a decent computer to run them until I was about 12. I wish I'd had the foresight to hold on to my old games; by the time I was 16 and my gaming passion cooled off for many years I had tons of original Nintendo and Super Nintendo games, PlayStation 1, Dreamcast, GameBoy, and Atari 2600 games, then my PC big box games like Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 (which I've since replaced, those are must-haves lol), the original Deus Ex, Sim City 3000, Diablo 2, and others, all of which were either traded in or sold at game stores, or simply tossed out as I repeatedly moved around the country. Only in my thirties did I start to repurchase big box games, mostly from eBay or the occasional score in local markets, and to even afford them requires constant vigilance because the prices for many of them are obscenely high. For instance I'll never be able to replace my box copy of Fallout, which I deeply regret. At least I have the strategy guide for Fallout 2, its something! Haha

    • @BriteRory
      @BriteRory 7 месяцев назад

      Sorry I forgot to address one thing; in the original Bard's Tale, that one features only the one city and its dungeons, the open-world aspect didn't arrive until I think the second game? It has been a long time since I played those games, but from what I remember about the first one, you basically just need to rush immediately from the start to the shop to buy weapons and such, because otherwise there is no chance to win against the encounters. It is totally down to chance whether or not you get an encounter prior to arriving at the shop, so if you're emulating it I would recommend creating your ideal party and immediately at the outset make a save-state to fall back on in case you don't make it, that way you don't have to go through the tedium of creating another party over and over again as it was like back in the day. That game is kind of brutal early on, but it definitely becomes manageable in short order. I don't know how familiar you are with mapping, but I would recommend breaking out graph paper and mapping the dungeons because there are things like invisible spinners that disorient your sense of direction, teleporters, and all kinds of nasty traps that can totally get the best of you if you lose track of where you are. Obviously these days this is seen as archaic and probably most younger people would look at it as a chore, but I still actually like it and will occasionally do it. However there are plenty of online maps to reference, and even if you don't want to rely on them, you can at least quickly look up where the shop is near the starting point to get properly geared up and then go on your own. Good luck whatever you decide to do! That is such an incredible series, especially the Amiga version which has brilliant graphics. All 3 games are great, and I adore the spin-off game Dragon wars; in fact I have a box copy of that propped up next to my computer! Sitting right next to my copy of the original Wasteland, the game of which Fallout was a spiritual successor due to licensing issues.

      @@BriteRorySo to follow up about the SMT discussion, I've played the famicom titles/ports mostly.
      My first SMT game was Shin Megami Tensei on the snes (which is the same thing as famicom? or a port? not sure tbh) and was completely hooked! I played SMT 2 also, which lacked the cool intro arc of "things are fine, then weird, then apocalyptic" that SMT games are known for. Still, to give SMT 2 credit where it's due, it's a great game with a lot of diverse areas to explore, and it has my favorite demon of all time: Terminator.
      I mean, look at that thing. A crusader with a jetpack and a shotgun in one hand and an assault rifle in the other. A sort of mid-high level law demon iirc that made me completely regret my option to play for neutrality. I've never seen such a hard design in a video game. I could write essays about the fantastic demon design of Terminator--maybe I will, but not here lol.
      I also love SMT If. It gets a bad rap because of Sloth domain (for good reason) and its brevity (unfair imo). The game is short, but it's more replayable because of how your protagonist's partner affects the plot and gameplay. Charlie gang wya.
      I also played SMT Nocturne, I still have it for my PS2. It was a great and beautiful game in its own right, but it wasn't the experience I wanted. What I wanted as a protagonist with a gun, a sword, and a computer program that summons demons, dammit. Early SMT has some of the greatest aesthetics that video games can achieve imo and there's nothing quite like it.
      I'll have to revisit the Bard's Tale game. I'm no stranger to mapping with graph paper, I think it's part of the fun. I have the Steam remaster version, which makes the graphics a bit awkward. It has a lot of QoL improvements like automapping--true roleplay autists like myself must leave these disabled of course lol.
      It's going to be hard to choose between recording Let's Play content and discussion content, but I'll crank out both kinds as long as I'm inspired and have the time. I like how relaxing the discussion videos can be, but I like the LPs because I want to document my journeys and share the experiences. I just finished Daggerfall without dying for the first time and didn't record most of it. Next time we'll have video evidence lol.
