Possibly six years ago I came across a channel run by a lovely, soft spoken, old chap, from Northern Ireland, I think. He had a series of videos showing how to break dahlias from dormancy and then take cuttings of the shoots. Each shoot is then potted on until they are planted out. He reckoned they made better plants than just growing the tubers from the previous year. I gave it a try and I agree. The other benefit is that you only need to overwinter one tuber of each of your favourites. Sadly, the channel disappeared from RUclips.
First time seeing your vid. Love it, I am in Oz, QLD. I don’t have a sheltered area to pot up things out of the rain and wind but I have been decluttering my potting area, which is only just under the eve of our house and some shade cloth. So love to see your great ideas!
I'm having a go at growing dahlias for the first time this year. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they go and if it's flower that likes our environment, fingers crossed for beautiful blooms later in the year.
Brilliant video and perfectly timed. I potted mine last week and was wondering about watering them again. I will definitely put that watering can down!!!!!,
It will be so exciting watching them bloom this year, knowing that they have an autumn appointment. Cannot wait to see them in all their glory! I just received word that Wollerton Old Hall and The Pilgrim have begun their voyage to the USA, Missouri to be exact! I'm so excited!
Impeccable timing Katrina. I was just thinking whether it's possibly too late to buy and pot new Dahlia tubers. Now I know it isn't that'll be another gardening job for the weekend. Oh I'm in the UK too...East Yorkshire. Discovered your videos this week whilst off work with my first bout of Covid and have really enjoyed seeing around your allotment and find them very inspirational. I'm lucky in that I have a nice rural garden, but sadly work takes me away all over the country Monday -Friday,(including Nottingham recently), so there's little time to devote to the garden. It tends to get a little overgrown and my designated wildlife area gets bigger with each year. That said however I'm happy with my little lot and do what I can to make it nice. Keep up the good work. You're giving Gardener's World a run for it's money.🙂
Hello Katrina, This will be my first real attempt. I am so excited for these dahlias to grow. So I understand Do Not Rot in the Pot! Label label label! No overwatering! I will start mine this weekend....Thank you for the tips
Great advice thank you. I potted my Dahlia's on Monday. Here in wet wet Manchester, the last frost date is 10th May so the only moisture they will get until then is what was already in the compost and only a light watering then.
Thank you, I needed this!! Im growing my own wedding flowers for our September wedding this year too... Just started to wake up my dahlia tubers indoors 3 days ago because I was afraid they might not be viable... I could only find eyes on a few of them and they are in bad shape... Praying at least some of them sprout! 😅😬
Thank you for this video! I just planted dahlias for the first time this morning and felt like I had no idea if I was doing it right! Fingers crossed they come up 🤞😁
Really helpful, thank you! It's my first year growing dahlias and I'm definitely impatient... Your reminder to hold back on watering is particularly helpful! I've got mine in pots under a cold frame in a sunny but sheltered spot on my allotment. I can't wait to see them sprout!
I’ve never been much of a Dahlia lover but I wanted some to attract bees and fell in love with a couple of singles - Kelsey Annie Joy and Teesbrooke Audrey, so I’ve taken the plunge and am growing for the first time. I potted them a couple of days ago and as the compost was quite moist I decided not to water them as I’m paranoid about rotting the tubers. Fingers crossed everything will be ok and who knows? I may have a Dahlia addiction by the end of the season 😂
Having a go at growing dahlia’s from seed. Dahlia merckii, apparently it’s a hardier dahlia. Potted up my tubers last week down here near Southampton, always wait for mid-April to pot up. Loving the channel and content, keep it up 👍🏼
Well, I start them in pots in March with no grow lights (similar climate as UK) inside. I pinch them all still growing inside. In May I plant them outside and they bloom in June.
Thank you for those tips. I watched your last video about Dahlia tubers that had suffered from that bad spell of cold weather of last year. Mine were of the unlucky ones. All my 12 tubers perished. I had them tucked away behind my workshop in a box well covered as I do each year. I did checked now and then. Alas! I still failed them. I know, now, what to do this year - 5 star treatment.
Humm I already done some mistakes 😂 fingers crossed. This would be very helpful before I started mine 😂😂 oh well let’s wait and see what happens. Thank you for the tips ❤
Thanks for the vid, you answered all my questions without me even having to ask them😊, we’ll almost. The advice on my packaging says to soak my tubers for an hour before planting. I’m now wondering whether to do that and not water the pot at time of planting. Such dilemmas keep the mind active 😄. Hoping that your year is a good one.
Lovely information from you once again. We live in Cornwall and I have left mine in the ground for the second year . Last year was no problem came up lovely. Do I need to cover them over as we are having such a lot of rain and strong winds this year ?
Can you keep dahlias in containers? And when they're finished flowering can I keep the tubers in the soil in the pot over winter if it's protected and kept dry?
This is very timely - I'm growing dahlias for the first time this year and was planning on just putting them straight in the ground in May (since that's what the instructions say). Do they really need to be in pots first? I don't have that much space to start them in my potting shed...
I've tried and tried and tried again with Dhalias with absolutely 0% success. 😂😂 I've only tried seeds though, maybe time to give the tubers a go 🙈🏴❤
Hi Katrina. I'm new to Dahlia tubers, always grown from seed. But my tubers are shooting in the garage, should I give them more water now?. Don't want to rot them but assume they need some water to draw up. Correct?
Yes, once they start actively growing you can water them more often. I always check if they need watering first though! Don’t just assume 👆 I hope your garage has daylight? 😅
I remember my father always saying that growing dahlias will teach you patience. Did you have any issues with earwigs or the like, munching on your blooms? I put in a flower bed for an ex many moons ago now. There must have been a ton of larvae just ready to hatch, or something. Because the poor dahlias were getting badly hit by them. When you shook the stems, it was like black rice raining out of the blooms. I'm just wondering if you had anything the same happen when you were first starting the plot?
They sometimes have a nibble but nothing dramatic. They’re good predators to have in your garden! I’m lucky to now have a well balanced ecosystem in my plot. Try the straw in an upside down pot trick if you have a few too many.
@@homegrowngarden I did the cane with a pot & scrunched up newspaper thing. This was 20+ years ago, and I haven't seen it happen since. The garden was neglected for a long time before I started working at it. I don't actually mind earwigs, or most bugs. Was more wondering if you had ever had the joy of a biblical plague of the wee critters over the years of growing dahlias.
I never do it so you tell about these Dahlias they are allowed to stay in the ground waiting over and they come and visit me I live at the same latitude as Sunderland in England (Denmark/Bornholm)
Great timing and tips, is my first year growing dahlias, you may have just saved my dahlias from being overwatered, big thank you!

Planted mine indoors yesterday

Looking especially forward to your garden this year of your wedding. It will be more beautiful than ever I think 😍
Great advice given in an entertaining manner, thanks.... 😃
Mine arrived this week and they are on my weekend to do list
I just bought a load dahlias saw your tips will be a great help thank you

Yay!
Great timing, I've been procrastinating, I need to get mine in pots....today. Hope you guys have a wonderful weekend.
Thanks for all the tips, love the labels, labels, labels 🤣🌸

Planted my one and only today, so I heard all you said, so time will tell if I have success or not. Thanks for sharing your tips. 👍❤️😊

Thank you for these tips, I love watching your channel 🙌 I’ve purchased my first Café au Lait to try this year from Farmer Gracy! I am super excited ❤

Dahlias are one of my favourites, we grow them from seed, which is a fab way of doing ti and getting LOTS of plants

Also trying from seed - got a few 'Bishops Children' seedlings started. Fingers crossed!
Nice. I'll start my first set tomorrow. ❤
I love Dahlias
Thank you so much for this, very helpful for a newbie dahlia grower 😊
Good advice!

Dahila's grown by You-Tubers! :) They will be beautiful, hoping for perfect weather!

Iv just bought my first 3 out of wilkos il keep you posted

It’s certainly optional. It’s too much of a faff for me when I have so many to plant 🤪 As long as the compost is evenly moist it will be fine.
I like your idea baut growing this buatiful flawer i love all kinds of this flawers but thanks anyway ❤
nice sharing video..watching from phillippines new friend
Lovely information from you once again. We live in Cornwall and I have left mine in the ground for the second year . Last year was no problem came up lovely. Do I need to cover them over as we are having such a lot of rain and strong winds this year ?
Thanks for the advice as always! Planting dahlia’s for the first time, are there any other plants that grow well around them?
I like to plant strawflowers and ornamental grasses like Panicum elegans ‘Frosted Explosions’
Happy Friday and notification squad ❤
Are you doing any RUclips content for gardening week in May?:)
I've found using a pencil to write on plastic markers to be the best. Some marker pen inks fade or wash off .
Can you keep dahlias in containers? And when they're finished flowering can I keep the tubers in the soil in the pot over winter if it's protected and kept dry?
I am growing from seed. Yes unusual. Let's see how I go.

It helps bulk them up before hand. Dahlias are loved by slugs so growing them on first give them a better chance of survival.
I've tried and tried and tried again with Dhalias with absolutely 0% success. 😂😂

@homegrown.garden Thank you. Done finger test. But I have some really big tubers so didn't want to over do it. Ta.
@homegrown.garden oops yes have a big window in garage. Plenty of light.
I remember my father always saying that growing dahlias will teach you patience.

I may have screwed up. Mine are about 6 inches tall in the Florida panhandle. First time trying. May not even work here.
❤❤❤🎉
