he likes to add bounces and recoils at the ends of motions, which makes it look closer to 3d animation than normal, but you can still tell it wasnt traced animation. very unique. maybe he was inspired by 3d movies
He studied at gobliens, which heavily leans into disney-style character animation. similar to the the likes of James Baxter, milt Kahl and Richard Williams. So its clear that a lot of that study gave him the skills to animate phenomenal character animation, as well as his own personal study and skills in FX work, which were gained from referencing other animators. @@tkim72003well there’s a lot more to action animation than you think. James Baxter is solely focused on character animation and fluidity. @@vovabars1234 TL;DR Gear 5 Luffy Good, S-Hawk bad, and more are closer to S-Hawk to me. I can at least agree that when you can see what he's going for (wchich sadly often requires you to slow the video down to see the tiny details) you can see he has a lot of skill, I just think the way composition is way to tight, and the "camera" moves to much too appreciate it, and I've never been much of a fan of the Studio Trigger style purposly highlighted smear frames, which is my biggest problem, hard work that's hard too see is wasted work. And to give an example of one time I feel his style really works, the Gear 5 vs Kaido fight (despite featuring these flaws to an extent) is a great example of how his style can be used to reproduce the old Rubberhose style in an action scene to great effect, but on the other hand there are more of them that are closer to the S-Hawk fight which is one of the worst examples of this syle in my opinion.
@@GreatWarriorHercule Depends, I actually thought some moments in Gear 5 vs Kaido were kinda dull and overly stretched plus the colors were kinda boring, but I do agree that the moments the animation was full on rubberhouse were very clean I think the S-Hawk fight was nice fundamentally, but it would really benefit from being a bit slower(in fact watching it in 0.75× speed, you can actually apriciate the smaller details and choreography). If you watch the original draft Vincent drew for that fight it's actually quite clean, but the post production kinda messed it up with effects, I think thick smear lines and impact frames by themselves are very nice animation techniques, but they have been quite overused in recent anime and especially in One Piece, so I agree with you to an extent
@@vovabars1234 I feel like we agree on a lot of points, and I think in the end we both see the problem with much of his scenes is that they could be better if the industry and it's trends didn't seem to push him towards not using it to his full potential, I do truly hope that at some point the anime industry will become less focused on showing off all the tricks they can show in a scene and more about how well they can pull them off so he can put his skill for tiny details, color usage, and atypical animation to it's fullest so that maybe one day I can call him the new Masaaki Yuasa.
