Imagine if the people passing these laws were around in the 60s and 70s, Wayne Gretzky wouldn't be the best player of all time or Bobby Orr the greatest Defenseman in history. When a homeowner goes to the expense of building a rink for his kids and I’m sure other kids to use the rink instead of being in front of the idiot box or tablet. I hope the town grows up and let’s this family keep its rink. If they where hammering while building a house till 11pm the town could say nothing about it, so what’s the big deal about a family having a rink. I hope some people who can make a change stand up for this family. If you can’t have a rink in your back yard then what’s next? This is such a sad state our country is in.

Some cranky fart might make a noise ocmplaint, cant walk or bike in a lot of places, kids need to depend on drives from your parents, your parents can get in trouble with CPS for letting their kids be independent. He took down a lot of trees that he shouldn't have and may changes that was against the heritage rules. If I was a neighbor I wouldn't want a full size hockey link next to me either. It's one thing to have a little one that the dads set up for the kids enjoying the winter but this isn't it.
If this was a basketball court people will be up in arms with all the constant thumping. You can't put a pond in the middle of nowhere either so what makes didn't think that he can just put a hockey rink wherever he want.

Martin Ross standing in front of the media bold-face saying the Township 'bullied' him? Ross was given *EVERY* opportunity to do this properly - he choose to thumb his nose at the rules and build this rink *without* PERMITS. He was warned and given warning notices many times about his illegal construction. Ross's comment about 'You can't hear a sound' is complete BS - he's had NUMEROUS noise complaints. The daily construction noise was bad enough - he utterly destroyed his backyard by removing trees that were older than him and his kids combined. As for his statement about transparency - more disingenuous half-truths - Ross had construction questions and Ross was counselled accordingly but he sought fit to ignore everyone and do it his way. Bottom-line - Martin Ross' actions and his failure to get proper permits condemned his rink - the Township of Markham was given no other choice. This story is NOT about a township that's against Hockey, this is ALL about a citizen's failure to comply with township by-laws and being told - once and for all - get rid of your unlawfully built rink or get fined. At least with him FINALLY taking ownership of this and taking this thing down, he won't be any further financial or environmental burden on the township but I'd be willing to bet Ross's main reason for finally complying is because he just doesn't have three hundred and fifty thousand dollars the township would charge him.. I love hockey as much, maybe even more my kids do but in this case - good riddance and once and for all - good night Mr Ross.

I know that heritage properties have certain regulations and should be respected. He didn’t want to alter the actual building, he just wanted to make a rink for kids to play on. Why can’t such a property get a permit for a rink when others can? Sounds more to me the real issue is cranky neighbours…This is Canada man! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

This may be the most nonsense thing Ive heard. Ice rental times/pickup hockey hours are ridiculous. You can barely get onto a rink without crowds or limited time to play 1hr etc. The fact alone this will keep kids off the streets, off phones, build relationships with friends etc… the thought of removing the rink is absurd. I simply see this as a way to bring kids together, I grew up not to far with similar size backyard rinks in a tight knit community. Some of the best memories. Aren’t we a hockey country?
Noise complaints, sure. Be done by 11 and pack-up as per city guidelines. No reason to take down the rink.

So do you want this in large professional structure in your backyard? Do you want all your nice shade trees removed which help keep your house cool in the summer and provide winter / wind protection, the lights? And drainage issues because in rain events all the water pools on your land because of improper drainage and review was not completed and it has no where to go but your lands because he has no room? This is not a backyard rink, don’t forget he owns a professional hockey school, your telling me this is not a coincidence? There is a place for something like this, it’s on a rural property with adequate space and buffers

Also he did not follow city guidelines in the first place what makes you think he will follow them for noise lighting camera etc.,

The gods have made up their minds and that's it. They get to destroy what has been a beautiful rural countryside, with pavement and thousands of houses, and a last remnant of the way things used to be, and should be has to go. We all know where they should go.

It’s ok to have a giant swimming pool in your backyard full of people all summer partying until 11:00 at night but not an ice rink in the winter when everyone is indoors and has their windows closed!? Bloody stupid.
