Don’t quite follow on the part to select an overlay node close to edge node. Is the overlay node also from Akamai? Is yes, is it available to public? If not, how do we know it is close to edge server?

No, the overlay nodes are not owned by Akamai, they belong to (or are leased by) whoever is creating the 1-hop overlay network. Since Akamai servers tend to be in various ISPs in well-connected datacenters, it is reasonable to expect that we can lease servers in nearby colocation datacenters, or get shared instances from nearby cloud providers. Given an assortment of these options the overlay created would perform some simple measurements (ping, traceroute) to determine the closest akamai server to each of their candidate overlay nodes.

@@EpicNetworks Thanks for the explanation! Is it correct to understand the overlay network create “shadows” of the Akamai edges; and routing decisions within the overlay is based on measurements of the Akamai edge closest to each shadow?

Yes, I would say that is a reasonable summary. Details are in the paper linked in the video description!
