- Today I will lead you through the forest of New Zealand to look for this unique bird called Barn owls. They are the most widely distributed species of owl in the world, and have been recorded in New Zealand on a dozen occasions since 1947, and since 2008 a single pair has bred in Northland. The nearest populations outside of New Zealand are in Australia and the islands of the Southwest Pacific. Some barn owls are thought to have flown to New Zealand from Australia, while others are known or presumed to have arrived as stowaways on aircraft and ships.
Females are slightly heavier (around 360g) than males (usually around 330g), especially during the early breeding season 3.
Remember, these enigmatic owls play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance by controlling rodent populations.
In summary, while Barn Owls contribute to rodent control, their presence must be carefully managed to avoid unintended consequences for New Zealand’s unique birdlife. Conservation efforts should consider both their benefits and potential risks.
