The Bathukamma festival is a flower festival celebrated in Telangana, India, with many myths and legends surrounding it:
The story of Bathukamma
The story goes that King Dharmangada and Queen Satyavati of the Chola Dynasty prayed to the Goddesses Lakshmi for a daughter after losing their hundred sons in war. The Goddesses granted their wish and the baby was named Lakshmi. However, the baby survived many mishaps and her parents named her Bathukamma, which means "life" and "mother".
The festival of life
The festival is celebrated to thank Goddess Parvati for the blessings she bestowed on the crop harvest and the income it generated. It is also a time to ask for her blessings for the next year.
The festival of Goddess Gauri
The festival is also dedicated to Goddess Gauri and her battle with the demon king Mahishasura. The battle took place for nine days, which is why the Navarathri festival is celebrated.
The festival of prosperity
The festival is celebrated by families to pray for prosperity and good health.
The festival of women
The festival is celebrated by young girls and women for a well-suited alliance.
The festival of flowers
Flowers are arranged on a wooden plank in the shape of a triangle, with a lump of turmeric at the top to symbolize the “Gopuram”.
