    I see it like Pirates of the Caribbean: when they made the first Pirates movie, they didn’t literally adapt the plot of the Disneyland ride. They just took the loose concept of pirates looking for treasure in the Caribbean, threw in a few references to the ride and built a completely new plot around it. Same for Castlevania: they just took the loose concept of Belmont, Sypha and Alucard trying to kill Dracula, built something entirely new around it and threw in a few homages.

    This is an incredibly reductive generalisation. Many games have very rich universes. The fact that you couldn't directly adapt the story of Bioshock into a movie doesn't mean that there is no potential for a good film in the world of Bioshock. All it takes is a bit of creativity. If you had a video game movie that was made as a passion project by a skilled director with an exceptional understanding of storytelling I'd be willing to bet it would be good.
    The story of a single survivor of a crashed ship having to survive stranded in the middle of an ocean on an alien planet isn't an inherently bad idea for a movie. In fact I think it sounds great. If you took that same movie and put a Subnautica label on it it wouldn't suddenly make the movie a bad idea. There's a lot of issues surrounding existing video game movies, but there's no reason they can't work.

      Unironically, that's what I actually expect from the upcoming fnaf movie. And that's only because we're most likely to get Scott alongside the director and scriptwriter(s). Scott, unlike a lot of video game developers (even indie) is really passionate about the whole thing and will definitely try his hardest to make the movie good.

    • @matriaxpunk
      @matriaxpunk 5 лет назад +57

      You can adapt the story of a videogame into a movie, but not the videogame itself. I think that's the point he's trying to make. When you adapt a book into a movie, you adapt the story of the book, but the story is pretty much the book. In a videogame, the story is just half of what the videogame really is; and that's in the best case scenario. There are a lot of games that are mostly gameplay with very little story. The importance of the narrative in videogames is a pretty recent trend. That's why a movie about super mario brothers is always gonna be borring, because the story of the mario games is just an excuse to implement some new crazy gameplay mechanics.

    • @mattwillis7806

      Cosmo on Twitter has actually said he thinks the Detective Pikachu movie might be good because it doesn't seem to be adapting that game's plot and instead seems to have it's own plot, just set in the Pokémon universe. His overarching point about adapting video game plots into movies is I think largely correct.

    • @chinclucker
      @chinclucker 5 лет назад +7

      Matt Willis Aren't Tim and Pikachu looking for Tim's father in both the game and the movie? Maybe it's not going to be exactly the same, but the main plot is still a boy looking for his father with the help of a talking Pikachu. So this would actually go against the whole point of his video.

      The reason Castlevania works though is because the games themselves have so little story outside of the core premise. It's literally "go right and kill the things" so it's hard to say if it's even really an adaptation of anything. There's minor iconic elements like the whip and a few names, but other than that it was a blank slate for Ellis to do whatever with. Hence why there's this weirdly anti-clerical element to a series that never cared about religion aside for using it as a means to kill vampires and other creatures. Because Ellis is the most stereotypical neck-beard atheist ever.
      Castlevania works because there was nothing there to begin with other than pre-established archetypes. Basically a Solomon Kane rip-off with names you know and writing typical of everything Ellis works on.

    Honestly I disagree with you specifically on the point of Bioshock being unadaptable. Bioshock has a lot of narrative meat beyond just the meta-commentary on videogames themselves. There's a lot of political and philosophical commentary going on in that game as well, and Andrew Ryan and Atlas are fairly interesting characters that could probably be fleshed out nicely by a good writer. I honestly think that it would probably be possible to replace the non-character player stand-in from the actual game with a more three-dimensional movie protagonist and still carry off all that stuff and the protagonist-is-a-slave twist effectively.
    That being said, I don't think there's any point in doing that because Bioshock already exists and already did it. A lot of the time my biggest argument against videogame movies is that they simply don't have a reason to exist and are pointlessly redundant. Maybe that's why it's hard to find talented people to work on what is in effect usually just a cashgrab for an existing IP.

      RicAdbur I feel like video game movies can work if a movie keeps to the source material and tries to tell a story rather than the “game’s story”. Take Bioshock for instance, instead of having the story be about Ryan or Fountaine or any of the Audio diary boys, make it about a simple hire gun, he’s making good money with Ryan but also gets put in many places and hired by many other people. Or maybe do the whole Burial at Sea thing and have it be about a detective trying to find someone’s little girl, hoping she hasn’t been sold off or shambling in the streets with a Johnny Topside.

I think they just need to get away from re-creating the blow-by-blow stories in the games and just use it as source to tell a different story.

Have people get emotionally attached to Joel, Sarah, Ellie, and explain the cordyceps, hunters, fireflies, and the FEDRA dictatorship in 15 minutes while still translating the full last of us emotional arcs and evolving nature of Joel and Ellie's relationship in an hour and 45 minutes. To say that any kind of movie good is "Impossible" in a world where a 2 hour LEGO commercial can be good seems way too harsh. I think the problem is that they chose to adapt specific games rather than taking an existing universe and expanding it with an original story.
    Something like the Legend of Zelda would be a perfect thing to make into a movie since the games universe is built around reincarnations of the main characters in their own, mostly unconnected stories, so a new story unlike the others in the series would be expected rather than weird and unwarranted like Street Fighter.

    • @ThatRPGuywithtoomanyOCs
      @ThatRPGuywithtoomanyOCs 5 лет назад +26

      Agreed. Many, many games *could* be adapted very well. Zelda like you said is an incredibly open, flexible world with cool magic and weapons. Metroid has awesome space pirates and sci fi tech, and if they wrote up a decent plot it could work as an action movie. A lot of video game movies get wrapped up in what already exists and can't escape it, so they try and rewrite the existing story.

      @@ThatRPGuywithtoomanyOCs There's absolutely no way to make Metroid work as a movie. The games are all about isolation. How you're alone in a dark, creepy place, trying to figure your way through it. You can't have a movie about a a single character who doesn't have anyone to talk to. (Castaway was a strange exception, and even then, he had a basketball to talk to)
      A Metroid movie would require supporting characters, something that just doesn't work well with Metroid. (Just play Metroid Prime 3 and Other M)
      And no matter how they would spin it, the movie would always end up being compared to Alien and Aliens, and it's all been done before. Even the Alien franchise is unable to move out of the shadow of its two first installments.
      Metroid is my favorite game series of all time, but the series is all about the mood and that dreadful feeling you get being stuck there. It's never been about the story.

    In my opinion, I think that it is entirely possible to have a movie based on the video game. The problem is, almost all video game movies are adapting the wrong components of video games. Video game movies often focus on recreating the video game's most iconic stores and game mechanics. That is not what the focus should be on. Instead, the movie should focus on adapting 3 critical aspects.
    *1. The Characters*
    The movie should incorporate the original video game's most recognizable characters to some degree. Many characters have strong personalities, traits, and philosophies. This is not always the case (such as when the game stars a silent protagonist) but when it is, the movies should do its best to adapt the character to the big screen. You can make the adapted character the main character of the movie or you can have them play a supporting role to the main character if you want more freedom to create a new story. It really depends on the type of movie. I can imagine an Uncharted movie would have to star Nathan Drake or a Ratchet and Clank movie would have to star Ratchet and Clank. A Portal movie, however, should not really follow Chell, though it would have to incorporate Glados in some kind of way.
    *2.The Setting*
    This is one of the most important aspects that must be carried over in some way. This is what allows the player to be immersed in the world and is necessary in any film adaptation of a video game. A Mario movie must take place in the Mushroom Kingdom, Halo movie must take place is the Halo universe, etc. This is how you establish your movie's identity. You can even have new character and keep the familiar setting. This is also by far the easies thing to properly adapt.
    *3. The Themes and Messages*
    This is the hardest one to adapt but very necessary. If you really want to please the fans and be a true adaptation, you need to adapt the original video game's themes and messages. This is 100% possible but the film makers need to be given enough freedom to convey these themes the way a movie would, not the way a game would. Take your Bioshock example. You can make a movie about the futility of choice and the lack of free will (I'm sure movies have been made about this message) but you need to present this message in a different way for the movie. Convey it in the way a movie would convey it and still staying true to the message.
    The movie adaption should not be limited by the story players already experienced in the game. It should be new and expansive. It should not try and adapt gameplay. Take the Overwatch shorts for example. On of the reasons they are so good is because they focus on the characters and exploring the world those character inhabit. They feature game abilities but those abilities do not feel like in-game abilities, they feel like natural extensions of the characters' abilities and world. It has to be possible to adapt a video game into a movie, the film makers just need to focus on the right elements.

      Revising a few elements that keep a game from translating well to film is acceptable as long as the script keeps a good STORY intact. Something that is passionate and made with heart, wit, message, pace, and visual flair for gamers and non-gamers alike to enjoy. Revising these few elements is acceptable as long as the script is respectful of the source material's canon without coming across as being outright Easter Egg pandering. I agree that this translation to film can't be done with the rudimentary plots of fighting games or simple action games, but I believe that video games that have made at least decent or interesting fiction in their own right are still possible to transform into objectively good fiction as films. For example, I believe that there could have been a good Warcraft movie to be made because it has a fairly deep fiction to draw from and recreate in service of a worthy storyline. Those cash cows in Hollywood, however? Fuck those guys. They have no understanding or care for the fiction of video games. They just make these things because they're out of ideas to make money quick. Even humble, caring filmmakers like Duncan Jones get fucked hard by these damned producers everywhere.

Sure, the interactivity aspect is gone, but it'd basically be a matter of picking one of the multiple paths the player can follow and adapting just that one playthrough into a film, adding in tidbits from other paths, so long as they don't conflict with the chosen path.

    I remember back in the day I always assumed that it was the way that game movies were tired to the action genre that killed them. Which made me super excited for both resident evil and silent hill. The main appeal of those games was the sense of suspense that movies does well. Especially Silent Hill, if you gave it an uneasy and abstract David Lynch vibe it would have been amazing.
    Sadly, I forgot that these films are made for broadest possible appeal. So niche genres or abstract storytelling aren't going to happen.
    I think it's the scale and budget of the projects that makes them bad movies to be honest. But of course if you're doing a small scale passion project; why adapt a videogame when it comes with so many creative shackles?
    So there's the issue; no filmmaker is passionately fighting to adapt games. They have their own ideas, and, as you said, game ideas aren't super compelling for films.

But videogames in general are about being able to PLAY the story or the characters you're presented with. So that's when videogame movies come out they mostly don't work because you are not able to interact with them, and thus half the fun is just gone.

    Don't remake the game, because the people who played the game already know the story and it probably won't be done well, but don't stray too far from the lore. If you pull a Resident Evil where it has basically nothing to do with the world of the game, as is said in the video, it doesn't please the audience it's there to please.

The movie will be based off the game, but also based off of 20 years worth of Pokemon media in which we've seen how the world of Pokemon looks and works, at least in cartoon form. So Detective Pikachu can be great because all we need is a good story and good characters since the fantasy video game world it takes place in has already been so well fleshed out over the years.

    "It hasn't been done, therefor it can't" is a pretty weak supporting argument. The problem as I see it (alongside 90% of your points) is that they try to get creative when they shouldn't, and they try to be faithful when they shouldn't. Take your bioshock example, you detailed a faithful movie adaptation for a game that would do best if the movie was a prequel. How did that city fall? "No gods, just man", how would a world like that feel? What kind of other experiments did those characters do? Tell a short story about the politics of that world pre-videogame, right as things are starting to turn to shit, without a protagonist showing up yet, and I think that could work out very well... if they found the right talent for it, which they won't, so it won't be good even in the very unlikely chance that it happens at all.
    Take mario for a second example, that movie was a clear cut case of "we were given money to make a plot for a setting that we have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what to do with". But, mario actually has some pretty interesting stories burried between the games, it's a couple of rival monarchies of different races with an unlikely hero arriving in the form of a sewage worker with a parkour hobby. It could be a plot of a diplomatic visit turned hostage situation, Die Hard that shit up! It could be awesome.

    • @Goblin_Hands
      @Goblin_Hands 5 лет назад +4

      Yes on Bioshock...no on Mario, unless it was a kid's movie. No way a giant spiked turtle is threatening...especially not with plumbers and a princess. And if you take that out, it may as well be a documentary on WW1 or 2 (too many nations/worlds).
      VG movies have potential, but only the ones with realism should be chosen. Donkey Kong or Mario probably would not make good movies.

    • @luriven4800
      @luriven4800 5 лет назад +26

      "It hasn't been done, therefore it can't" wasn't his argument, though. His argument was that video game stories tend to be hollow, due to having to primarily facilitate and drive the gameplay, which movies do not have. As such, adapting most of these stories would produce hollow results, which is evidenced in most of what *has* already been done. He does note examples of some video game stories which could be adapted well.
      More to the point, I very much agree with the notion that aiming to tell a story based on the game-world itself opens up a lot of avenues, which may produce good results. At that point, though, you're talking about the game lore, not its story. Similar to your examples, Dark Souls also has expansive and complex lore you could probably do a lot with. Its story, however, is quite plain and generic. He didn't comment on the adaptability of game lore vs game story in this video, but he has said on Twitter that the Detective Pikachu movie might be great, due to it likely drawing from the Pokemon world as a whole, instead of just the game story alone. So I think you're kinda on the same page here.

    @Wertsir 4 года назад +1

    Here’s my pitch for a bio shock movie. You can do it three ways:
    1) Pull a Hardcore Henry, and make it first person POV despite the conventions of the medium. When a choice comes up, put two options on the screen in the form of text, as if the audience got to choose between them, then have the option Jack is compelled to take happen regardless, as the audience is forced down the one path they could ever take.
    2) Ignore jack, set the movie during the fall of rapture, watching as things slowly descend into madness for a cast that is morally grey. End the movie as a tragedy, with Jacks plane crashing, and one silent shot of the lighthouse before you fade to black. - In this way the movie becomes complementary to the game, instead of directly copying it. It’s a morally ambiguous prequel focusing on anti-heroes or outright villains that sets the stage for the game. It is the Fate/Zero to bioshocks Fate/Stay Night, or The Joker to its Batman.
    3) Ignore jack, and ignore rapture. Set the game in Columbia. While Booker is also limited in agency in truth, it’s not because of mind control, but rather time travel that just puts him in the same scenario over and over again. And this translates much better to film. While booker is not as much of a non-entity as Jack, due to also being the primary villain, and founder, he’s still a bit bland. But that’s fine, because he’s not actually the main character of the story: Elizabeth is. Booker is just a decoy protagonist. The gameplay elements of Bioshock infinite already took a backseat to the world building and story, which was primarily told through cutscenes and dialogue, so it’s easy enough to just turn into a straight film. And being a sort of alt-history dark reflection of our own society makes good fodder for storytelling, similar to something like The Man in the High Castle or The Handmaids Tale.
    I could see all of these working. Though the latter two would likely be better than the first, on account of motion sickness.
    Alternatively, bioshock would be a great candidate for the first movie to be VR exclusive.
    Edit: also get Guillermo del Toro to direct. The aesthetic of The Shape of Water was only a few steps away from being perfect for Rapture anyway.

    I feel like GTA IV could be done because there’s kind of some depth with Niko and the immediate side characters. The problem I see with it is that the “immigrant comes to America and joins a life of crime” arc is a little too played out. However you could focus more on Niko’s mental state as he balances his past, present and his perceived future or escape from crime. Maybe cut all the trips to the Triangle Club and Chase Point hookers. But I think you work with some major points in that story. Niko coming to America. Niko finding out Roman is full of crap. Niko killing vlad and working for the mob. Niko meeting Kate. Dimitri betrays Niko. Niko battles with seeking revenge on Darko. Niko being conflicted about his past/life of crime and wanting a normal relationship with Kate. I would calm down some of the action but I think there’s enough in Niko’s character to write around. But what do I know?

    Those game examples are service level. Bioshock specifically. A story about a man who is compelled beyond his will would make for a compelling mystery, which is partly what Bioshock was. A movie adaptation usually should never paste a game action for action and beat for beat, cause what's the point. There can be great videogame movies. Hollywood just can't get it right.
    For the Resident Evil example, part of the joy of RE is the characters. The movies never got that right. All said, I completely agree about the Castlevania example and making games into shows over movies. Of course, anything with passionate and skilled people should do well.

    What the hell does the lack of interactivity has to do with a video game not being able to crossover into a movie? The main issue is, no real directors or story writers take video games or its material seriously. There have yet to be Christopher Nolan, Russo Brothers, James Wan, or other great directors to give video game movies a shot. Super Hero movies looked like it would never have a formula to crack back in the day and now look at the genre. Games like Gears of War, Castlevania, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid, God of War, Final Fight, Punch Out, Bioshock, Darksiders, Killzone, The Last of Us, Doom, Metroid, Fire Emblem, and a few others could definitely work as movies. The source material provides everything, weaving it together to make it into a movie takes talent and passion to make it work. Some games doesn't have much plot or a main protagonist to follow the story, thats even better because it leaves more room for the Writer to get a bit more creative and add in original plot elements but like I said most of the writers tackling these video game movies either have no experience or have a backlog of shitty movies they've done in the past.
    I have yet to see any writer or director take the source material seriously.

      Great animation,story(based mostly on the second and third NES games),dialogue,it's Rated-R,with some nice gore,they use music from the game soundtracks and the voice acting is top notch(Alucard is voiced by the guy who played Dr.Balter in BSG and he's super snarky,Trevor Belmont is voiced by Richard Armitrage from The Hobbit trilogy). There are some small indie games that could be 1o1 adapted to stories. Mainly I think about "Forgotten Anne" or "Gris". They are very visual and story driven. Gris is basically a short abstract movie already and Forgotten Anne also has the dialogue and story down. I'm pretty sure those could be made into successful movies.
    Problem is: they are small indie shit. Nobody is gonna spend 100 Million Dollars to make a movie about a small indie game no one knows. That's not how hollywood works.

  • @xLogikBomb

    I disagree with the idea that a game "can't" be adapted into a good movie. I agree with your sentiment that none have been successful yet, and I agree that the lack of interactivity poses a challenge to the adaptation. However, I don't believe that it's impossible nor do I think it shouldn't be attempted.
    Let's turn the scenario around. Let's talk about movies that were adapted into successful games, or at least movie universes that were borrowed from to make a successful game. Goldeneye, Knights of the Old Republic, Spiderman, the Terminator 2 arcade game, Mad Max etc... These are examples of really good games that are based on a movie. I ask, is it impossible to imagine a world where these games came out first and then their respective movies were successfully adapted afterward? I think the answer is no. It's not impossible to imagine. If Goldeneye were released in a world without James Bond movies, it still would have been a critical success that revolutionized shooter mechanics in games. Then, if James Bond movies released afterward, I think they would still do well (even though, in this hypothetical situation, they would have been "video game movies").
    Another point is, that lack of interactivity is not the only factor in what could potentially make a good video game movie. The only true factor that I think matters is whether or not people can make a good movie. The fact is, video game movies aren't bad BECAUSE they are based on video games, they are bad movies simply because they are bad movies. They tend to be a poorly written, usually poorly acted, poorly directed, incoherent mess. The fact that they were based on video games has nothing to do with their failure. If all the video game movies we have were still the same minus their video game heritage, they would still be bad movies.
    What the industry needs to do is focus on making a good movie. And that has just never been the case with video game movies. Video game movies are poorly made because there is never any care put into them. There's not much incentive to do so, which is why we have gone this long without a good video game movie. The industry uses video game movies in an attempt to make a quick buck. Hollywood knows they can sell a crap movie to the right demographic and make a profit if that demographic is big enough. It just hasn't ever been the case that a production team behind a video game movie really cared about capturing the feeling of its universe. They pump these things out for quick cash because they know they can attach a popular name to the movie, knowing it will sell based on that.
    What we need is for someone with a clear vision of a movie to make a good movie that is based on a video game, and not make a "video game movie." Take Logan, for example. Logan was an incredible movie, and I for one think it came very close to the feeling of what COULD have been an incredible Last of Us movie. You said video games don't offer enough content to be adapted into a movie, and I couldn't disagree more. Video games now are rich with content, lore, characters, and entire worlds all their own (not all, but a lot). World of Warcraft has more lore and story than the producers knew what to do with. The fact that movie failed certainly wasn't due to lack of content. So of course a good movie can be made about a video game. You just need a team working on it that cares, and puts the story of the movie first. If Marvel can make a successful movie about a sentient tree and a talking raccoon based on a comic book no one's ever heard of, then someone can make a good movie based on a video game. You just need to pick the right game with the right team and tell a compelling story in that universe. It doesn't even require the same characters to count as a video game movie. Hell, video games based on movies are telling stories in their respective universes all the time without using ANY of the movie's characters. Case in point: Knights of the Old Republic. KotOR was an amazing game that had NOTHING to do with the movie's characters or story. But no one would ever deny that it was a Star Wars game, because they told a story that took place in that universe. That's all you have to do. Tell a good story in a video game universe. I hope this paragraph also solves the "video games don't have a good enough plot" issue you had as well, since you aren't required to tell the same story as the game. Just tell a good story that's based in the game's world.
    To wrap up, I just don't think video game movies have sucked because of a lack of interactivity or lack of content, they sucked because they were bad movies. At no point when I was watching the Mario Bros movie did I ever think to myself "man, this would be a lot better if I were interacting with this mess." Nor did I ever think "WoW just doesn't have enough content for a good movie." All these movies sucked because they were badly written movies, NOT because they were based on video games. I maintain that a good video game movie CAN happen. It's just that one simply hasn't been made yet.
    Liked the video man. It was interesting and raised good opportunity for discussion. Keep 'em coming!

      @fgodinho10 5 лет назад +5

      I agree 1.000% with everything you said. If you look closely, you can easily see that most movies adaptations of vgames really suck because they aren’t well produced to begin with. And that not necessarily has to do with the source material, but instead the lack of actually adequate people for the project. I could very much imagine a Dead Space movie adaptation happening, for example. Its not that mess of a story, Isaac and the (few) supporting characters have their depth and the other plot elements, such as the Unitology and The Marker, can very well be feasible to the viewers. Really hope Marcus read your comment, cause you shine some very good points there.

      Yea but The Witcher book series has a lot of books in it for one movie. LoTR had three movies for three books, because the story was that long, and even like this, some things had to be cut out. The Witcher book series has like five or more entries, cramping all that stuff into one movie would be a disaster. Just look at poor Dark Tower, a series with seven books, all in one movie, it was terrible.

      Thanks for bringing up LotR, though. That's another great example of books/games/movies that all coexist and are each amazing.
      These absolute statements he makes are just nonsense. Books can be made into movies or games. Games can be made into movies or books. Movies can be made into games or books. And they can all be done well.
      Just because such transitions of media are often not done well, doesn't mean they can't be.

    • @Draenei98
      @Draenei98 4 года назад +2

      @@cjwrites Of course you don't have to (and shouldn't) cramp all the story into one movie, I was reflecting to the "Could you really adapt the story of The Witcher into a movie? ... No man."
      part. This statement is true imo, you couldn't adapt the story into a single movie (which I think he was referring to), you would need multiple movies (like LoTR) or a series, which we got.
      As we have seen with Sonic or Detective Pikachu, it's possible to make decent game movies, just not like they used to. You should grab the universe where the game is set in, and try to be creative with it, rather than straight up adapting it, which requires someone who knows their shit (and I think this can be quite difficult).
      A lot of good games have great stories because you experience it through your actions. It hits differently that way, and I think it's quite hard to adapt. So imo, most games are not fit to be made into a movie. But there are exceptions ofc.

    There’s a couple promising ones on the horizon. Detective Pikachu looks decent, but the best looking one (surprisingly) is Five Nights at Freddy’s.
    The games themselves are not heavy on gameplay and they’re heavy on story. (Some say that’s the appeal of the games)That alone is promising.
    Second, the person writing the script is the creator of the games, Scott Cawthon. He recently just scrapped a script everyone said was good to make a great script. He genuinely cares about the movie and the fan. He quit Warner bros to go to Blumhouse. because they weren’t giving him freedom. He genuinely wants to make a good movie. He even addressed that the games are past peak popularity. “I just want to make a good film” is what he said.
    Third, Chris Columbus is Director. It’ll at least be a well directed movie.
    I’ll still go in with realistic expectations, but if any video game movie is going to be good, it’ll be this one.

      Jacob Woodson This background you've provided on the FNAF movie sounds fascinating. I really didn't like the direction taken for Sister Location and Pizzeria Simulator at all, but FNAF could end up being a great murder mystery if it's actually pulled off.
      Some things that could really cement this in my mind:
      - Going all-out horror as the tone
      + (Again, NOT the direction of SL nor PS whatsoever)
      - Incorporate both the actual animatronics and the Nightmare versions
      + (this will pave way for the classic storytelling question "Is this real or in my head?")
      - Add a dash of black humour, but use it sparingly
      + (it will imbue the script with real personality like the first game with lines like "It's amazing that the human body can survive that long without the frontal lobe")
      - Round out the investigator and murderer as characters as they are not the icing on the cake, THEY ARE THE CAKE
      + (Give them real reasons and motivations for what they do and why they do what they do)
      - Provide an R-Rated cut supplied with healthy amounts of viscera to enhance the horror
      + (Tell a mature story to justify this cut; graphic content for adults with a satisfying message for adults and vice versa)
      - TONE DOWN THE JUMPSCARES
      + (Use slow, atmospheric scenes, delve into the twisted psyche and deliver on the supernatural to make the movie feel complete as horror)
      But only time will tell, I guess.

    Prince of Persia is actually a good fantasy adventure movie... sure it doesn't have a lot to do with the VG except for the basic setting, but as a story and a movie, it works fine... it's certainly not a "messy plot". The 2000's Tomb Raiders were okay (the first one was quite successful), and the new one is okay too. The Resident Evil movies are okay as well... some more than others of course.
    There's no inherent reason why and adaptation couldn't be good, but the thing is, like any type of movie, it needs passion behind it (and sometimes a healthy budget helps). There's no reason why a Bioshock movie wouldn't work, because there's a lot of interesting elements in there for it to work. Sadly, most of the time they just go for a cash grab and make a shitty movie: THAT is the problem. Kinda like what happened with earlier SH movies.

  • @Taartin

    I am 100% sure that video game movies can work. You need a game with deep enough world to create your own main character. Exploring some video game worlds as someone who is not "the chosen one" could be really fucking interesting. And how is living in this world with such "chosen ones". I think this has potential. But as you said: it has to be the right game, like e.g. bioshock doesnt work from anyone elses perspective really, no matter wich bioshock we are talking about.
    Dont get me wrong, a film will never reach the potential a game has. I still think there are some good ideas to explore.

    Most single player videogames are designed gameplay first. You design the gameplay loop, you think about the levels and the progression and then work a plot around it. The best games make the two integrate seamlessly, but there's a huge uphill battle in making one work without the other
