In the Middle Ages, England emerged as one of the most influential and powerful kingdoms in Europe - a far cry from its desolate, devastated state after the collapse of the Roman Empire. Over the centuries, England produced many dynamic and memorable kings. From building cathedrals, to refining law, from leading crusades to cultivating the church, from leading intellectual revivals to leading invasions of France, England’s kings shaped the wider world of medieval Europe and continue to fascinate students of history.

Nice video and livestream. 😊
Great scholarly work you done on this piece of history and oratory skills and thank you very much you so such exquisite stylish looking back at old masterpieces of artwork and paintings and drawings of the times. Cheers🍻🥂
Spelling mistake “enlisted” not “elisted” don’t wanna hurt your sponsor 👍🏻
It was done purposely for you don't look out of the context he writing from or not modern times maybe.
How many of them was Stewarts? It'll shock you. Stuarts is the French spelling.
Again, very well researched and presented. Thank you so much.
Thank you!
@@RealCrusadesHistory One question two of your videos that i always wanted to watch are no where to be found one is about how dracula got his name and the other is about pre islamic spain's visigothic inellectual brilliance
Can you please link them to me i really want to watch them
I can't really argue against this. I always felt that King Richard was unjustly judged when he clearly achieved great things in his all-too-short rule.
Also, I've been with this channel for many years, and breaking 300k subs is very well deserved!
Very good video, I would love to see a video on the Holy Roman Empire, Castile and other Spanish kingdoms as well as France.
Thanks for this upload & good morning from australia. This is my fav history channel!!
Thank you Shelly! Good morning to you as well!
My list:
1 - Alfred
2 - Athelstan
3 - William I
4- Edward III
5 - Henry V
My favorite: Richard I
The only thing I disagree with on this list is William I but overall good
@@SandileNgwenya-gv7nxThank you 👍
Honestly surprised that Alfred the Great wasn’t number one. During his reign he helped save the Anglo-Saxons from being overrun by the Danes. In addition to that, he spearheaded the spiritual and educational revival of the Anglo-Saxons.
No other king on this list saved their kingdom from such an existential crises, save his grandson Athelstan to an extent. I know this list was compiled by paying members, but I just wanted to give my two cents on the matter. Great video overall, I just disagree with the ranking.
Ethelstan rates higher than his grandfather for me but its a close call.
@@paulyounger-gl5ck That’s fair and I understand why. He was like Charlemagne in that he made the most of what his forefathers worked for and became a considerably powerful monarch.
I can't wait to show my 9 year old son this upload, even though I tell him Richard was the best king England had he's bombarded by school and horrible history that Richard didn't care for England
Richard was an amazing warrior and fearless leader but I'm partial to Alfred. I know his portrayal in TV shows has helped me feel that way but he was worthy of it. Those men inspire our admiration because they didn't send boys to die in oil wars they led their armies to the field themselves.
@vCLOWNSHOESv so true, and that's why I get my young son to learn about them, I'm sure it inspires him. Last year, the school did world book day where pupils dressed up as their favourite characters, I'm proud to say that my Charlie chose to dress up as Edward III :)
@joshbeckett9255 which is why I'm forever unpicking the damage that British education and the f^^king BBC is indoctrinating into my young son, I get him to watch this channel as part of the unpicking
@joshbeckett9255 and let me tell you, my boy gets into trouble for it, I've had to go into school and lay down the facts about history on three occasions already, and he's only 9
@@joshbeckett9255 looks like the powers deleted my first response to you because I criticised the British education system and horrible history for being inaccurate
Henry II is my favorite because of how hard he had to fight. The odds were always against him, as he was constantly dealing with betrayal from his friends or family.
But according to this “history” channel: No CrUSaDe=NoT aS GOod as RiChArd the LiONHeARt. Who cares what actual historians think?!
I can agree with this. He had a whole lot to deal with and dealt with it competently. He also established much of the English crown template that would dominate the kingdom from then on. His list of accomplishments are extraordinary but he gets judged for the murder of the archbishop over his accomplishments in my opinion.
😮🎉 this channel I forgot about it your voice gave me a hit of nostalgia
I feel that Henry 5 😢really deserved to be on the list. He conquered France whereas most of the fighting for Edward 3 was really done by his son 😢
He was so much better than Richard I
Thank you so much for this video it was very well done ⚔️
No Henry V is a surprise
Richard is always just a popularity contest case, great warrior king, but definitely not better than his father or some of the later English kings
Easy to say that when he died early, beset by challenges on all sides like his father was.
100% I used to be a complete Richard I fanboy until I learned about Edward III and some of the other kings from the Plantagenet dynasty and beyond.
@@Usernametaken1 Please read John Gillingham's book about Richard I. He's still up there deservedly in spite of his short reign and the recent quips about him not being English or not being in England all the time.
This was like a history lesson I actually *enjoyed*! Ranking kings is tough, but the arguments for each were clear and engaging.
Well thanks!
Missing William the Conqueror
He was good but not as good as these ones
Thoroughly enjoyed this one, great to hear the people's opinion. I just wish I could go back in time and tell Richard to take his safety more seriously!! Especially after already being imprisoned.
All great kings, although I'd have a different order probably.
I disagree Richard I deserves to be there. He didn't do 1 good thing for england 😂
Hi, awesome live history video I enjoyed it. Can you do next video. The great queens of england. Have a great day see you next video 😊
As an American, I'm proud of my English blood, as well as of the rest of my European heritage. North America is beyond a doubt my mother continent and the United States is my mother country, however I still hold the lands of my ancestors in high regard and I see Europe, in a way, as my grandmother continent and England especially as my Grandmother country. Ofc Africa is the homeland to all humanity but I feel a closer connection to Europe as my last ancestors to live in Africa lived there at least 70,000 years ago and at most 100,000 years ago, whereas my most recent ancestors to live in Europe lived there less than 100 years ago, and my earliest left just 400 years ago. Sorry if this weirds out Europeans.
It's only lately that I've come to appreciate Richard Lionheart. I'm surprised he ranked #1 though.
Good job like always thanks
Henry II should be higher on this list in my opinion. And as long as we're going with just my opinion, Eleanor of Aquitaine deserves to be number 1 over all of them. She was fascinating, so was Henry.
Alfred the great is this country greatest king should be number 1
It was an informative and wonderful historical coverage video about 5 greatest England 🇬🇧 kings ...shared by an excellent ( real Crusades history) channel
Wrong flag buddy 🏴 this flag😂
I miss your live streams and what is your nwxt video to be about
What an odd question, of course John I.!
Great video so far I always love to see a notification fo a new vid popping up. Even though id rank mine a bit different
For reference:
Alfred the great
William I
Edward III
Richard Lionheart
Henry V
Maybe also Cnut the great but yeah, hes not that much of an english King to me😅
super video. thanks and richar d lion St. established George as the patron saint of the Crusades and the kingdom, is that true?
Alfred the great has to be at least in the top 3
May I ask what song you used when talking about Henry II?
My favorite is still King Richard Lionheart still. Just a bad azz all around who I think deeply loved his country and God for if he didn't he could broke his oaths to regain the holy land to God or the Popes in Rome or like the French/ Austrian king broke oaths and shivery captured King Richard lionheart and for captive and ransom for example. For such one you can't help to think for God and country he must of chanted on battlefield to his men and forefront of his men for written his men had high regards or King Richard lionheart and he had if his men too.For that suttle and simple things of many to be a great leader especially in such regards in battle🦁👑🦅 In my ancestry of one of the Henry early ones I had knights to the kings and they were like boarder petrol of the kingdom and coast. One was knight of the hawk and took up option to learned to read and write and other knight just wanted to be a warrior and didn't take up the learning opportunity. In legends but in my mother side of the family the knight of the hawk seen a big group coming on the coastline and took a short cut on his horse to bring word to the King and advised the King and doing his obedience respect (bow to) advice the King Henry the group to small to be invading force but large enough enough to attention. For it was like middle eastern messagers or like bring the first scrolls of Jeremiah I think or told that as a kid by my grandmother stories of family.🗡🦅👑🦁🍷
I dont think the Lionheart really loved england, though out his reign he only spent 6 months in england, he was born in france and spoke french. Granted back then the official language of the english court is french but what kind of king only stays for 6 months
Only type of King who loved his kingdom that much and deeply believed in convictions of his heart and God I think. Other history was he born in England 😂
@@user-hu8fn2jp5vRichard was born at the Royal Palace at Oxford, England. So was his brother John.
Richard ruled England very effectively through his competent ministers. He was a prolific letter writer with his ministers. This is how he communicated his orders to them.
Henri the 5th has to be on this list.
Alfred the Great and Athelstan with out them there is no England it would be Danland im so glad they made the list
Nice 😊❤❤❤❤
Henry ii is my favourite English king
I believe he’s England’s greatest king after 1066.
@@Kanfachan definitely be a contender good sir
This is really good. Its amazing to imagine where some of these guys got the spirit and courage to do what no one else of their time had the stones to do 🤔
Long live the Lionheart!!! 👑 🦁❤️🔥⚔️
Before watching:
Edward III
Edward I
Henry I
Henry II
Henry V
Where would Baldwin the 4th fall or is not from English rule but Jerusalem only
I already knew who #1 was gonna be 😉 Swim philip, swim 🏊♀️
I know this is kings, but interestingly, the Anglican historian, William Cobbett, considered Mary Tudor to be the greatest English monarch, excepting only Alfred.
those historical sources oh my
I read that Richard has many paintings in churches in England, named streets,
maybe the 2700 execution is also real because Ambrois himself writes it, but it turned me off again
I read Hugo Lincoln's magna vita biography or the book from several sources, where there is also magna vita, hoveden, ralph diceto, so it turned me off that richard chased hugo lincoln the second time? you know, when they met in Gaillard, Richard gave way to him, I consider this to be further slander,
Where's Charles III ?
In hibernation
It’s medieval kings only. He will be featured in a future video titled “The most useless monarchs of the past 200 years”
Henry V?
If it's strictly about king of england, then Alfred and Edward the older were not count.
The top 5 will be Athelstan, William 1, Henry 1, Edward 1 and Henry 5 because they are the only ones without big cons.
William 1 had very big cons the man was tyrannical even his chroniclers didn't like him
Aethelred the Unready definitely had the worst name 📛😅😅😅😂
Ivar the Boneless's name was pretty bad as well (I know he was Danish, but the name!).
Always had a soft spot for Henry II. Becket was a troublemaker alive and dead. There is a long list for worst English King....
Henry II wanted to use Becket but Becket stood up against him that's all but Henry was good as a king but a bad person
Beckett is a Saint, and he was right.
As bad as Edward II was, I still think John was worse
The current king of England is not like them.
King Baldwin IV too young die.❤
