  • Dropping the subframe is not for the faint hearted. But it needs to be done to replace the oil pan gasket, which is a major preventative item that needs to be addressed before going FBO. In this video, Aiden walks through how to remove the subframe from his E82 135i.

This series is very helpful (at least for me), and I have some suggestions:
5:48 - You can remove these bolts from the top, but if that's not possible, don't fret. You can also unscrew two ASA screws (on each side) from the bottom - see 18:26
15:44 - You don't have to do this part. It's easier to just leave it as it is and lower the subframe slightly. Then you can unscrew it easily. This is the only way that works if your hands are big.
21:40 - Yeah, this is hard, especially on the driveway. I suggest you lift your car as high as you can. Then, turn your wheels all the way to the right and slide the left steering rod through the subframe. After that, turn your wheels all the way to the left and take out the subframe. It will take some struggle and wrestling with this thing, but after 10 minutes, you will have the subframe out and you will feel great. :D (believe me, you will)

All the work just to get to the oil pan gasket, may as well do the S55 pan and pump upgrade if you can find one cheap from a crashed car

Your channel is the best man! I have a n55 e82 and I'm slowly working on it and trying to get things fixed and upgraded so these videos are amazing.
I just did the rocker cover to fix the squeek!
    Thanks a million!

you don't have to remove the subframe. Just lower the subframe few inches and you have enough room to replace the oil pan gasket. I have done few oil pan gaskets, and never have to remove the subframe. Besides the engine support bracket, I also used the floor jack to support the weight of the engine (at the transmission oil pan using a piece of 2x10 wood so I don't crack the trans. pan).
