The Apex of the World - Fire Emblem: Three Houses for piano/strings/voice/harp/sax (ft. Joe Zieja)

Okay you guys finally--this four month long project has come to fruition!!! I fell in love with this theme while playing the last map in the Blue Lions route and it had been a while since I'd done a huge multi-instrument Fire Emblem arrangement, so this harebrained idea was born haha.
This time I also really wanted to include my friends and colleagues in the Fire Emblem fandom who had done FE3H covers and were passionate about the game! Moreover, to make it extra special, Joe Zieja, the voice of Claude von Riegan, was enormously kind enough to offer his time and talents to this as well, so I ended up scoring this for piano, two violins, viola, cello, voice, harp, and soprano saxophone hahaha. I took a huge gamble on the sax, as I don't normally write for winds and mixing it into a strings-heavy arrangement like this was a risk i wasn't 100% sure would work hahaha but I am nothing if not stubborn and swore I would make it work...somehow hahaha. I enlisted the help of several saxophonist friends for advice in the writing and feedback from Joe himself to optimize the part as best as I could. The harp was also a wild card, as I have literally no experience writing harp and I'm happy with how that part turned out, as I basically treated it like another piano except with epic glissandos hahahaha.
Reducing the rest of this huge theme was another challenge. I made the piano function as rhythm section covering the bass and drums, plus some of the high synth runs, harp the piano ostinato and general filler, and the strings and vocals were straightforward transcribed as best I could from the original. As a result, this was one of the hardest piano parts I have ever written for myself OTL and the strings had some really heinous 8th note passages that went on for years lmao. I needed a third lead instrument besides voice, as the original uses trumpet, but I REALLY wanted Joe on this so I was like ok...sax is close enough hahahaha. I played around with having him on clarinet instead, but ultimately the part hit some very high notes and soprano sax sounded somewhat like an oboe so i was hoping it would blend well. The sax part doubled with the vocal a lot since I was hoping she would bridge the gap in the blending, so to speak.
Since the arrangement was so unorthodox and involved so many people, plus a saxophone mixed with strings lol, I didn't trust my own lack of expertise to mix this mess. I enlisted the help of my friend Fredrik Hathen, who is not only a fantastic arranger/mixer/composer himself, but a sax player as well and so I knew this thing would be in good hands. I cannot thank him enough for making us sound amazing!!!!!!
Some easter eggs:
-We all tried to work in the colors of our favorite house in our videos
-Israfelcello grew out a chinstrap beard and is wearing a clip on earring
-Samantha is wearing an Edelgard shirt and Edelgard hair
-Reven is wearing an antler necklace
-Patti's curtains are actually purple lmao
-The ending is a tribute to the late Neil Peart, the drummer and lyricist of Rush, one of my favorite bands ever, who died in January around the time I was finishing writing this. The opening riff from Dreamline is played in the cello and harp parts and the last seven notes in the piano are the last seven notes of Limelight. RIP Professor.
Once again I cannot thank my super talented collaborators enough for their time and talents on pulling this together! It was a true labor of love and we hope you enjoy it too!

Rubyfirefox I disagree “Apex of the World” gave me chills when I heard it at the end of my first playthrough with the Blue Lions. “God Shattering Star” although cool didn’t invoke that same feeling in me.
Pearse Molloy Really? I think Apex of The World is the worst one out of the final themes don’t get me wrong I absolutely love it but God Shattering Star instills a sense of true adrenaline and that this is the final battle but Apex of The World makes me feel like I wanna cry
To me god shattering star really helped feel like an epic song that showed how ominous the enemy was Apex of the world felt like it was the end to a climatic war for blue lions and black eagles and funeral flowers felt well just sad it wasnt meant to be happy fight. u didnt go into thinking yea this is the last part I can't wait to finish this.
Apex gave me chills because it contains many motifs and melodies that are present in many themes throughout the game, so it invokes memories of everything you've went through. It also fits the fact that you're fighting someone that you used to spend so many times with.
God Shattering Star is epic sure but it just felt like its own thing, so I don't feel that much emotional impact from it. But I guess it makes sense because the enemy is someone so distant and foreign from your life in the game.
we need a god shattering star arrangement, that would be so godly

Haha me too, it’s cool they were still willing to do it though. I’m a total Edelgard simp so I’m so happy Patti and the Harp player are black eagles. (I also find it funny that none of them are SS, which makes sense, that route kinda sucked imo) at first I thought it’d be cool if they did god shattering star, but I think the collab with Joe singing GST was amazing.

Choosing BL on my first run, being completely blind and hearing this final boss music, seeing the final boss and being so surprised!!! This brought those memories back so much !
When hearing this theme in game, I knew it had vocals but for me it was a bit hard picturing someone singing, how did they look like performing it, etc., and thanks to the wonderful vocalists I can see that now! And Joe’s sax as like backup for them was an amazing touch!

Hearing it on my first ever playthrough of 3H in Azure Moon in the final playthrough, and seeing a smack ton of enemies on the final map gives me chill until today. Hard Classic actually gave me a ridiculous challenge. Heck am proud I made it through without any deaths or divine pulse, though final boss 32 range siege is ridiculous.

This might be my favorite rendition of Apex of the World to grace the internet. Three Houses really killed it with the final map themes, but I've got a special fondness for Apex of the World, since I fell in love with Azure Moon on my second playthrough of the game. WOW, Really well made! You made the saxophone blend really well in this and gave it a really well fitting part in the music in my opinion! There are times when Joe blended SO well with the vocal part that I was shocked to know that they were both producing sound together. I'm always happy to hear saxophone with strings, it's something I definitely never get to hear enough of! Again, really good utilization of saxophone in this piece. Props to Joe too for being able to blend his sound well with the ensemble as well. Can't get enough of hearing this.
