Starting my Toyota Auris in winter 04.02.2012. Cold start -24 celsium
Official car dealer checked everything about that engine and for now he said, that everything works fine as it should be. In winter weather like that that is a normal thing, that diesel engine for Toyota cars starts like that. Did full check and maintenance for car in February.
preheat it w/ the glowplugs a couple of times more, then she'd start better. Also battery needs to be fully charged that the starter can provide rpm's. this is necessary because the HP pump needs certain rpm's to build up pressure. but besides all that, your engine sounds pretty normal at -24°. the fuel ignites pretty bad and engine runs heavily when that cold. don't worry. but preheat it and look for fuel that can handle these temperatures. greetings from Germany.
3-4 times at least i suppose preheat should be done.
As people wrote before, doing warming up cycle of 3-4x times for glow plugs would do a better job.
In a best case- put a car in Garrage.
Glow plugs were changed 3 days ago in Toyota service - Amserv Motors- out of 4 glow plugs 3 were changed.
As it was said before, in winter time it is normal for Diesel engine to start like that, if the car has been left outside for a whole night.
But in my case out of 4 glow plugs 3 were faulty. Engine couldn't start better because of those 3x faulty glow plugs. After the service, which was taken in that month by replacing them everything became better for a engine start. It was going less lighter like 50%
Guys, check out your glow plugs, that could be the main reason. Hope you can learn from this I had 2 years ago. For now, in 2014 everything runs smoothly thank God.
In mornings like this, it is harder. Indeed.
Plus in addition there was problem with glow plugs on that winter.
besides, i own a 2.2 d-cat from 2006 in my avensis combi and she wouldn't start better. got 155,000 kms on it and its 177 horses still run pretty well, even below -20°C... at least when it is warm. Drive carefully!

I run the glowplugs through 3 cycles (and repeat if necessary). Then crank the engine.

I have spoken with other my friends, who has Toyota Diesel engine.. And they had the same issue, like me. When my video was taken, there were out spark plugs, but oher things were ok. Most important notice is that you need to warm up spark plugs - 4x or 5x times at least to start diesel engine, when outside it is is colder than -9 of celsium

McAmber great, thanks:) after 10months I saw few spots that I should correct, but... I sold this car about month ago. It was a great car-specially the acceleration and steering (but audio was very poor). Now i got the Auris wiht 1.4 diesel engine (without any acceleration:)) but I just love toyota (this is my 6 or 7 Toyota in my „car history”). Regards from Poland:)
Who is better auris 1.4 diesel or 2.0 diesel?
More economical will be 1.4 Diesel. 2.0 has more horsepower, but bigger fuel consuption. My go would still be for 1.4 diesel version.

Is this start of engine normal? Anyone can answer, engine is quite new, always driving safe and not racing on roads.

László Jakab for a diesel engine and this kind, that is pretty low actually. Faulty spark plugs was the reason in this case. Garrage service changed the faulty ones. I learned it the hard way sadly..

My Auris did the same. But it starts better on -20 then on -5 °C but why?
