Great harvest Misilla! I am going to grow more potatoes next year. I tested them in my garden this year and they did well. Your fingerlings are really big. :) I bet they are tasty. :)
Thank you Donna! Yes they are tasty as well as the German Butterballs! Seed potatoes are kind of pricey this was the first time I bought them. I may just buy the organic Yukon Gold and Red next year. I will be saving some of the harvest for planting as well! Rainbow Gardens
Awesome stuff, so inspiring to see you harvesting all those types of potatoes. A sincere thank you as always for taking the time to record and share this video ~Peace~
rosycheks Thank you! I plant some of our potatoes during fall and winter. I plant them 4 inches deep and mulch heavily with grass clippings and or dried leaves to keep them from freezing. They stay dormant until around mid-March when the weather warms and they start sprouting :)
I love the squirrel at the beginning. We have one red squirrel that likes to visit the garden. We named it Sammy. beautiful harvest! Thanks for sharing, Scarlett
How to Grow a Garden with Scarlett Damen Thank you Scarlett! The only issue with the squirrels is they always dig up the seeds I sow....so I have to resow over and over again! O'well...Glad you enjoyed the video thanks for stopping by! Misilla
Rob Bob Thank you Rob! Glad you mentioned not washing them...some had dirt that was hard to rub off, because of the clayey soil and thought about washing them, but now I wont. Thanks again!
The SQUIRREL in the sunflower is so CUTE :-) Nice bountiful harvest! I never tried growing potatoes before, but I been thinking about it for awhile, this video is inspiring me to go ahead and try. Happy Fall :-)
Those bags are really cool. We grew some sweet potatoes in raised beds and just harvested them this week. They do better for us cause regular potatoes always attracts Japanese beetles and are a pain the deal with. Thanks for posting, you have a cool channel.... Have a great weekend
BadAssFarmer Thank you very much! I would love to grow sweet potatoes next year! When is the best time to plant them? I hope you have a wonderful week! Misilla
Learn To Grow It's best to plant them a few weeks after last frost to make sure the soil is warm. We planted outs late cause we were not planning for it, but because we had so many buds growing from last year we figured why not. Our soil is pretty acidic which is great for potatoes. Right now we are letting them cure which takes about 6 weeks and then they are ready for eating. I tried the white sweet potato after waiting just about 2 weeks and they had a really good flavor and not too sweet. Enjoy your weekend
I hope you're enjoying this rain! I got some of the butter ball potatoes and fingerlings from friends who grew them in their garden this year. The butter ball ones I had already and are yummy delicious and wanna cure the fingerlings and waiting to use them!
***** Hi Monica! I know and it's getting cold! Time to plant some garlic soon! I can't wait to to try the butter balls...will be roasting some tonight! Are you going to plant some potatoes next spring? They do really well here in our climate! Thanks for stopping by and I hope you are having a great fall season! Stay warm :) Misilla
suburban homestead Yes I prefer the garden beds and in the ground, but if space is an issue containers work great on a balcony or deck! Thanks for watching! Misilla
reyna lu Hi yes definitely! As long as your soil is workable and not frozen. Mulch after you plant in case you get frost. Thank you very much for stopping by! Happy gardening, Misilla
I have a system that came in just over 100, Using Clay balls that really killed the price at 40 US a bag & I needed Two. Pond liner broke the 100. Not by mush about 15-20. Fish are really pennies. Reclaimed everything. I got a free pump from a neighbors small pool that was trashed. worked for about 1.5 years. Good Luck.
Lovely harvest!!!. My kids were asking just last night if there were any uploads from learn to grow. All of us watch your videos as a family. Are your potato beds deep when you start out? How often do you hill them when growing in the ground? Thanks
liftingenthusiast Thank you very much! I'm so glad you and your family are enjoying the videos! We appreciate you taking time to watch them :) The beds are 8 inches deep. We plant the potatoes 4 inches deep and start hilling when the plants are 6 inches tall. Hill up to the bottom leaves of the plants until about a month before harvest time. if you're growing determinate type like Yukon Gold you don't need to hill them. The tubers will grow near the seed potato planted and wont be exposed to sun. I have some videos on "Growing Potatoes" playlist you may find helpful :) Have a wonderful week and I hope you guys are enjoying fall! Misilla
liftingenthusiast By the way I uploaded some fun videos from our summer day camp...I think your kids would enjoy if they haven't seen them yet....we did science experiments!
Learn To Grow Hi Misilla. I think we have seen all your videos several times. This is my first attempt at balcony gardening. I started composting and vermicomposting a year ago . And then I had a very frustrating 6 months when I sowed in April and the heat and monsoons destroyed everything ( I live in India and my balcony gets sunlight September to May). So its the beginning of my growing season. I have very limited space and manage around 7-8 seven gallon containers and a few smaller containers. It's a real challenge and envy the yards and access to materials you guys have so easily in USA. Several of my potato stems just rotted and died . They are potatoes I got from the market which had chitted. I have no idea about the type. May be they were determinate. Thanks to channels like yours, one yard revolution, California Gardening and Rob Bob we have learnt a lot. Thank you.
Hi it depends on the variety...between 70 days to 130. I grow early season that are ready in 70 to 90 days: Yukon Gold, Red Norland, Irish cobbler. Thanks for watching! Misilla
Misilla--very nice potatoe harvest for you and your family. You say you can store them in winter months , where and how do you store them.? I did some tatas last summer but I didnt get near the crop that you did with this one.
Thank you my friend! I store them in the basement. In a dark and cool place with temperatures 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. I think Russets store the longest, but other varieties can store for a few months during wintertime. They may even store longer with even cooler temperatures of 35 to 40 which is ideal for potato storage. Thanks for watching!
Even if the potato plant dry completely the potatoes are safe because if you don't dig them they only will geminate in the next season, so potatoes do not rotten if the soil is dry.
Great videos!!!! so, you said it was going to rain a lot and you didn't want the potatoes to rot....is that only because it was close to harvest time? I mean...surely it stormed on them at some point right? thanks for the help. starting my 1st garden ever this year....
ChicagoCFH Hi! Yes, it was very close to harvest time and some were ready. We get a lot of rain in the fall and winter, actually all year round :) . I was prepping one of the beds and surprisingly found three German Butterball potatoes deep in the soil! I'm glad you found this helpful and wishing you a great season! Thank you very much for watching and commenting! Misilla
37 lbs! excellent! Well done. If you dont mind me asking, how much property do you have? Or more so, how many square feet of growing space do you use? Thanks! Cheers!
TheAmusingMe Thank you! Our property is about 0.34 of an acre, but most of the yard is up front near the street! My current growing space including our mini orchard is about 1,000 square feet. I am planning on utilizing the front lawn for more edibles! Thanks so much for watching! Misilla
Hi there I plant them about 12 inches apart and in rows about 18 inches to 24 inches apart. For bigger potatoes plant them 24 inches apart. Thanks for watching!
Potatoes!! I having trouble sprouting these pricey fingerlings and gourmet potatoes I keep buying.I know they spray all potatoes with retardant agents to keep the roots from sprouting.Potatoes are diligent and many still grow roots. What is the proper way to encourage roots to grow before planting. Many of mine spoiled, grow fungus and rot before they sprout roots.Only a few sprouted roots and I planted them.
Keepskatin Make sure you have good drainage or they will rot. Keep the soil moist, but not soaked. Plant them in early spring in full or part sun. If soil temperature reaches above 80 Fahrenheit it will not produce tubers. I plant store bought organic potatoes and they do just fine. This year was the first time I bought seed potatoes online. I hope you give it a try next season. Thanks for watching! Misilla
I was gonna do my own soil I was to lazy do i waited many weeks.....to do it so when I was gonna do it I saw huge stems and im like why then i remembered the potato peels so...... I have to plant potatoes

Thank You So Much! :)
You're welcome, so sorry for my late response, been busy with our baby! :) Happy gardening! Misilla
what types of soil do you use for your potatos? and if I have potting soil and just add fertilizer will they still grow?
Hi, very nice video. can you let me know how many seed potatoes did you sow in the grocery bag.
+Supriya Ambetkar Thank you! I remember putting two to potato seeds in each bag.
You can leave potatoes in under the snow. If they're not ready I leave them underground until next year and leave t hem under the wood chips.
Even if the potato plant dry completely the potatoes are safe because if you don't dig them they only will geminate in the next season, so potatoes do not rotten if the soil is dry.
I love seeing volunteer potato plants! Thanks for watching!
Nice I got potatoes but growing in door.
