- This week we look at the Roleplaying Game of a darkly humorous future.
The Computer is your friend, Trust No One and Keep your Laser Handy, Paranoia is set in Alpha Complex, surviving a nuclear war it protects it's inhabitants from mutants and the commie menace.
However, it's unaware of two things, what commies are! and that all of the clones in Alpha complex are mutants.
The players play Troubleshooters, who find trouble and shoot it, each hiding their mutation and secret society affiliation from each other, the discovery of which will lead to termination.
Basically trying to out their team-mates as commie traitors, before they themselves are outed. A chaotic game, where death is common (but it's okay, you're a clone, so quickly replaced by an identical copy), and player conflict isn't discouraged, it's actually the aim of the game.
Memories! Our GM used to kill me as I was the only one nuts enough to "get it". Classic ploy was to pass him a note: "NOD, SMILE, ROLL D20, NOD. LET'S SCARE PEOPLE". And he would. Also all battles were in real time! "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! Standing there gawping! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! The same!" Naturally I would declare I was charging at the Killbot-9000 screaming "Long Live Friend Computer!!" while brandishing the Pre-Reckoning Weapon I had been tasked to test (an electric toothbrush with a dead battery). And I usually survived because it was funny.
Paranoia is funniest games to just read through, and then it manages to make the successful transition to being funny to play as well. The craziness of the setting is awesome, and just brings out the worst in people to the best of results.

This is a game that blows among us out of the water.
I'm still waiting for the "Happiness is mandatory" computer game to get released, I quite fancied it even if it didn't get great reviews. A multiplayer version would be amazing with everyone backstabbing and betraying each other.
Now! 🙄 I would role play the life of a fallout shield, I would give a bonus for players that could roleplay their character well and set a record of how long they live.
Seven friends all plotting each others downfall - a game I gm'd exclusively at school and a favourite.
Sounds like Paranoia to me, loads of fun killing your friends.
Used to play this quite a bit back in the day. Table with people with a sense of humor = funniest game ever.
I think I've laughed during RPG's more than I've laughed at any other time, comedy seems to come naturally when playing, and Paranoia just helps the fun times roll.

Cyberpunk's 2077 quest named "Paranoia" brought me here because I suspected it might have been inspired by the TRPG
Been playing through it, and there are a bunch of RPG references I've spotted, as well as many Sci-fi, video game and current politics references too. For all of its faults, I'm loving the game.
