  • Early in the growing season, corn seed is very vulnerable to emergence issues such as pests and disease pressure, cold soils, weather events, uneven planting depths, and many others. When the seed does not emerge, it can be hard to diagnose the issue without getting your hands dirty and digging into the soil. In this video, Pioneer Field Agronomist Gary Brinkman shows his tried and true method of getting to the root of corn seed emergence issues using a square bottom spade. Gary shows you how to break open the soil to get a profile view of your corn seed to see the seed in the context of its growing environment, what to look for to be able to diagnose any emergence issues, and finally the emergence issues he saw in his example.
