Thanks for going back to see Will in all of his splendor.
Beautiful drive!!! Thank you Russ😊
Hey Russ, don't forget to meet Ely's most famous resident - Dirt the cat - who lives in the locomotive shop at the Northern Nevada Railroad Museum!
Loneliest Highway... Your old video.. I still watch it often.. 🙏🙏
Nice video; I feel great times are coming; stay safe😎😎😎😎😎😎😎👌😎👍👍
Always enjoy your posts
thanks for letting me ride along.
Wow lived on Lincoln way, McGill. Nothing has changed. Been 7 years. Thanks for the memories.
That's such a neat old neon cowboy. Lots to check out on the Lincoln Highway. Interesting about the pony express, 100 miles a day, changed horses 10-12 times. Nice drone footage. 🙂👍
Fantastic filming and drone footage !!!! 👍 Thank you Russ
Love it. Looking forward to Ely video thanks for the virtual ride along. Be safe
Wendover Will is related to Vegas Vic, Vegas Vicky, and River Rick aka Laughlin Lou!
Wonder how many of your fans, 🤔 like me, hear themselves saying, 'Check it out!' and ' Too cool for school!' "Talk soon!' Ha! Guilty! Love it. Great video and GRATEFUL for you, Russ.
I retired from the Air Force in 1993 at Hill AFB, headed for my "forever" home in Bishop. I took leave in June to go out to Bishop to make sure I wasn't on a "fool's errand". Looking at Rand-McNally, decided that Ely was about the halfway point, I decided to park the pickup camper at the Ely KOA for the night.
McGill was, indeed, a mining town (kinda-sorta). The big mineral in the area was copper. West of Ely, out highway 50, is the little town of Ruth, which is surrounded by several open pit mines. In the early nineteen-oughts, the original mine owner thought that the area around what is now McGill would be a good place for a smelter, so he built one which was on the East side of what became the town. When I drove thru town in June '93, the smelter was extremely visible. In September, after hanging up the uniform for the last time, I drove the same route. Passing through McGill, the smelter was completely GONE!
And, a word about highway 50. While in Ely on that June trip, I saw all the stuff about US-50 being the loneliest highway. While my desire was to get to Bishop, I came to wonder how, in heaven's name, could 50 be lonelier than highway 6? Returning to Utah, I cut up north and joined US-50 to see for myself. I have this to say about that. If US-50 is the loneliest highway, then US-6 is the Highway from Hell!
Enjoy Ely. I had a lot of fun there. Enjoy the Nevada Northern, as a Grade-A railfan, well worth the tour. Stay safe.
I have been driving Northern NV since 1980...doing business (upholstery) for all the owners.....the smoke stack in McGill was visible on a clear day for 50 miles...I'd watched for 13 years (like you said), poof it was gone.....the accounting dept. for Kennecott may still be open (mine closed in 1983 well after I first saw it).....so, if you retired from there in 1983
Super cool as always great video. Love that lit cowboy only in Nevada. Thanks again and be safe out there.
I love it, you drive, and I sight see works for me thank you ALL stay safe
We drove it in 1997. Too cool for school
Beautiful morning drive !!!
Russ, I am a 80yr old Photographer, drone pilot who is disabled and house bound for all intents and purposes. I really enjoy your travel videos as they cover ground I used to travel, and I see familiar places , Montana, Wyoming , Yellowstone etc. I hear you talking about elevations, your iPhone has available a compass which you can also install on your IWatch which shows elevation. I have checked mine out and it as very accurate. thank you for these videos which allows me to vicariously travel with you.
We've driven both 93A and 93 numerous times. Brings back memories.
Passed through 50 years ago Time to revisit !
Your video makes one feel like we were there ourselves. I missed this Interstate-80 corner of Nevada but drove Route 50 in the 1980s. Almost a frightening experience to be so far from civilization, mostly when you see the sign "NEXT SERVICES 400 MILES" !! You need a fuel tank big enough to take you there or you're in big trouble ... RICHARD
Love this video….thanks Russ!
I drove US 93 between Vegas and Idaho about 25 to 30 times when I lived in Vegas. Had a Mustang GT 500. Yep we made fast work of that from Alamo to Wells. Great video.
This drive brings back childhood memories 😎 My family owned farmland near Eureka in Diamond Valley just up the road from Ely. Old mining town with underground tunnels makes it an interesting place. Thanks for the drive.
Great vid! Love that Pony Express Sculpture!
Seeing wendover will always makes me feel good. A giant neon cowbow smiling and pointing. How cool is that? When I was little, the western highways were dotted with neon of all kinds. Some places looked way better at night lite up than in the day, lol. Gosh, the drone shot from the rest stop was jaw dropping. The expanse. Wow!!! Just waiting for the temps to drop before heading up that way. Was planning to head east on the 80 before gas prices went nuts then canceled all summer travel. Better in the fall,...our little toyota rv doesn't care much for the heat on mountain passes anyway plus the crowds die down then. PS; a few ghost towns in that region according to google maps. But I don't know if they're worth checking out. Cheers.
Thanks for the ride along!!! Very good Russ ! Nice scenic ride ! 😁👍🇺🇸
Are you going to The Clown Motel in Tonapah????Great video! Thanks Russ.
You do such a great job very detailed love traveling along with you thanks for everything Russ be safe keep up the great work
Looking forward to more LINCOLN HIGHWAY 🛣 with Russ & RVerTV! Enjoyed your drone shots and calm, relaxing road scenery. Love the concrete Lincoln Hwy markers placed by the Boy Scouts in 1928 with the inscription “This Highway Dedicated to Abraham Lincoln.” It’s a treasure hunt to find them at businesses or private property. It’s fun! 🤩 Thank you!
That electric horseman sure appreciate effort for us viewers! What a great stretch of road. .. tracking bit of the pony express! Thanks Russ!
Before Route 66 there was the Lincoln Highway linking America. Thanks, Russ.
Thanks for the great drone coverage, and information! Much appreciated!
Lincoln Highway dedicated in 1913 ran from Times Square NY to Lincoln Park San Francisco Cool Russ !!
🙋 Hello Russ! Mail service has come a long way since the Pony Express. Enjoyed seeing Wendover Will neon sign. The aerial view was nice. A little hazy off in the distance. I hope you are well. Enjoy the rest of your day, & have a nice week.👍
I had a rattlesnake in my yard in Arizona this summer.
Awesome Russ thanks🐾🐕🐶
It snowed in Wells, Nv over Memorial Day weekend in 2022.
This was great stop! Glad you told us about the historical marker next to Wendover Will!
Right on! Ely Ghost Train coming up. Also. If you are going to do the loneliest highway, go to the Chamber of Commerce there in Ely and get the booklet for the road. It has places of certain towns along the way that will need to be stamped. Once u get all of them stamped you mail it or turn it into the main office in Carson City. Then they will mail you a cool wall Plack that reads you survived the loneliest road in Nevada hwy 50. I have that on my wall. Was a pretty cool drive. Noone around for miles. and some lapel pins and other things. I cant wait to see the Ghost Train again. Hopefully you will get to do the entire tour of the complete grounds there.
Oh man… I hope you take this the right way, but you sound just like my dad when we’d be driving through small towns and I remembered how annoying it was. May he Rest In Peace, if only he was still around to annoy me. So thank you for this unexpected gift.
If you go all the way on Hwy 50 towards Fallon, Nv, stop at Middlegate for lunch. Awesome food in a historic building. The operation runs completely off of a generator. Restaurant, RV park and gas pumps.
Awesome venture! I used to have kinrelatives in McGill and Ely. Thanks for sharing
2 years ago we drove from Utah to Reno on US 50. Spend the night in Ely at the Nevada Hotel. Had a great time.
Worked in Wendover in my younger days, at the Peppermill Casino. I used to visit Wendover when it was just a small black building out in the middle of nowhere with that cowboy sign lighting up the night.
As you are heading South on 93 looking to the East in the distance is part of Dugway, Utah an Army Post. The Lincoln Highway goes through it and a small original bridge is still there. Also South of that is where some of the original Pony Express and some stops are still there or markers. To get there you can go through the Toole valley and Johnson Pass.
The Lincoln highway used a lot of the old roads that already existed and strung them together so of course they used old pony express and stage coach routes. Very cool old history. Same with Route 66
Had a great visit to Ely this summer on my road trip from Ontario to Nevada. The Kilns were very cool.
Enjoying your videos thanks
Thanks for Sharing!
Hey, Hey, It's RVerTV Russ, Great to see Wendover Will. Thanks Russ always a blast hanging out with you. 👍
Would you have named him Wendell?
@@SmittyAZ That would be a great name ,LOVE IT 👍
@@lloydbaker6988 My Cocker Spaniel. RIP. 😁
Your videos are amazing and well done. Thank You so much 😎 My son recently found you and asked me if I follow you. I said yep for quite a while! Happy Trails
I forgot to comment on this when it originally aired. But McGill was a smelter town. My grandfather worked at the copper smelter back in the 50s and 60s. The last of the smelter was demolished in 1993. The copper mine aka Robertson mine (3 open pits) is in the town of Ruth west of Ely. I've spent a ton of time in Ely so it's fun seeing you go through an area I'm so familiar with. Oh in your Ely adventures you forgot 2 things...
1) meet Dirt. The loveable cat at the rail yard.
2) see the brothel. 😆
Cool. My high school was on Lincoln Hwy in Lisbon. Ohio. It was mentioned in our school song. Yay! Thank you all these interesting videos!
I always start my traveling early in the morning. I like being done with my day between 4-6pm.
McGill has a sharp swimming hole, it appears to still be open 3 days a week.
didnt expect to see my little town on youtube, great video russ! hop you enjoyed mcgill and ely!
Love your channel Russ👍👍
The Mcgill historical drug store museum is a cool place to check out.
Thanks!
I have a soft spot for Wendover in my heart as I went into the Peppermill with $100 and walked out 3 hours later with $16,000.
I thought the bug on your windshield was on my tv.😂
Hey Russ...Thanks for the ride.
The Lincoln Highway begins 'near' me in New York City at Times Square.
(I'm 20 minutes away in New Jersey). Any time I've been near there I have forgotten to look for the marker. 😕
Great video Russ , nice ride , interesting places , thanks from Puerto Rico
Thanks 👍
I’m on Lincoln highway in Lynwood Illinois
It wasn't too dark to film at the beginning. It was just perfect to be able to see so well at such an early hour. Not here on the east coast.
There is a very interesting documentary on RUclips called “100 Years on the Lincoln Highway”, by Wyoming PBS. Highly recommend. Thanks for the fun travels, Russ. My husband and I have travel the same roads you’ve been on. 😃
My Trips on Hwy 50 wasn`t so lonely Lot of others doing the same thing,,
Interesting town.
If you turn west from thst rest stop on 93 alt you can take a pretty sizable bit of original 1915 routing on a series of dirt access roads through ibapah, Callao, and fish springs
Please consider the Lincoln Highway in South Australia! 🙂
At 5'37" see the job ad and the qualifications for ideal candidates that Pony Express used to look for!
Pulling out of McGill, at 13:21 there's a billboard for the VIP SPA. Did you happen to visit? LOL
I am looking forward to the Lonliest Hwy tour, as I did the last trip. One question though, as a Snowbird, I would like to travel Hwy from Reno to Ely on my way South this October. What is the snow conditions in mid-October for a m/h? Doable?
Is Wendover Will modelled after Will Rogers? Thanks for sharing, Russ.
Maybe Vegas Vic?
Route 30 runs through my hometown westward toward WV Panhandle then immediately towards Ohio.
hey, I like the name of that town 😜
Are you going to Fallon?
“Copper in those hills.”
Hi! Russ! I am an avid reader of RV stories and information, especially in the Arizona area. Many moons ago I was stationed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, in Tucson. Although I did go out on the weekends and explored some places and things, I only got to see "the tip of the iceberg in the state. If one day, you happened to take a trip Southeast of Tucson, there is a ranch called Caballo Loco Ranch. Maybe you heard of it, already. Anyway, they have turned it into an RV Park, and claim you can stay there one whole year for only $1000.00 (without the hookups). A little more with the hookups. Sounds unbelievable to me. Anyway "check it out" as you like to say, sometime in the near future, if you are interested. In the meantime, I will continue to enjoy your very interesting videos. All the best Russ! Joe
Stop at the Jail House for supper. Tables in the old cells.
Thanks, but this one ended way too fast!
He's getting ready for the record heat wave out there...
13:21 VIP "spa" lol. hint: how many "spa"s do you know of that are open 24hrs :D
At age 6 in 1941, I went with my dad the new Forest Ranger in Ely, to the Burt Robinson ranch near McGill, to buy a horse. The FS allowed him $50. The horse he wanted (a beautiful big bay with 3 stocking feet) was $65. On the way home I asked him about the difference. He said "I want the horse, I will pay the difference". When I said; "maybe he would have taken $50". My dad said; "if I had offered him $50, he would not have sold me the horse".
Iguana
The railroad didn't end the Pony Express. It was the telegraph.
Do you still have the Ebike?
11:11 McGill Clubhouse, completed 1915, google has more.
🤗😳😎🎶👍👍
There is no Wendover in Nevada. Wendover is in Utah. The name of the town in Nevada is West Wendover. You might be offending the locals.
I made the 59,315 comment !
Hey Russ before you leave town can you drop by D&S repair and get me the phone number on the back of the 2 tone blue 4x4 Suburban there in Ely Nevada. saw it as you drove into town. Thankyou very much Greg , I'm looking to buy it.
After spending my entire life in this rat race of Denver. Small towns are looking more appealing....... Although the wife needs to be within 25 miles of a Mall🙂
She can buy stuff online
Do you ever wonder where these people work in these small towns?
