I met this band at a concert trying to get their name out there and gave it to my girl and she loves it. It’s a rock song, but the female that does the vocals kills it, it’s also like a duet! The song is You’ll Never Know by TheThoughtLife
Additionally, it should be noted that this album, the majority of White Pony, was an innovative turn for Chino. A great deal of the songs are written from perspectives that aren't his own; they aren't reflecting any personal narrative - only mood and emotion. The songs are based on mood, atmosphere, theme, motif, and stories. Chino really benefits from this angle, especially considering the dark subject matter. The songs that were based on his own experiences really complements the other cuts (especially the sentimental, sweet trip hop of 'Teenager' or coked-out manic sarcasm of 'Street Carp').
I love that the title just means 'killing yourself with electronics in a bathtub". This track is the song that cemented their transition from a nu metal contemporary to the experimental and atmospheric direction they've been on since. It's how they got that cute moniker, 'Radiohead of Metal'. It's also how they got their reputation of making music for horny goth girls. It's a beautiful track. And the music video is shot at a fan's house. A girl won a contest they held to have the video shot at their place.
Be quiet and drive was also a big departure from their early NuMetal sound... Almost like an announcement of what was about to come. Deftones really changed the game in metal as a whole, their 25 year old songs and albums still sound fresh, and bands are still trying to emulate their sound without much success. Legends.
As someone that has been addicted to depressive dependents. It makes you feel like someone actually feels like you do and puts you in the same tone and place that you feel at that time... It soothes you to not feel so alone... Deftones was a definite in my life but I've gotten past that sickness but it still reminds me that there is still something left to live for no matter how hard
This song and a lot of this album along with NIN - The Fragile were what a couple of us used to cruise around late at night in crispy air, and a little fog, in our big junker oldsmobile that refused to quit and a stereo worth more then the car. Up late during summer with no school. Just feeling the music and driving. Creating things to do. Driving to warehouse or open field raves and driving home completely exhausted in the bright morning sun. No cell phones. I miss the turn of the century. Great music came out of the 90's to still be heard. The dark industrial tone was all over the place. EDM mixed with rock and rap and everything in between. It was beginning to merge into a whole new kind of music. ...Great times.
I agree!! I had a 1999 Honda Civic and would Jam Deftones Around the Fur to a "small town Saturday Night". Just drinking Natty Lights out the trunk, sitting around smoking weed and watching stars, telling stories twice told but just trying to figure out what the heck to do because we wanted to do it all in one night but also chill and enjoy the moment as we all knew we would get older and this music would fade. NOT DEFTONES!!! Every album gets better and better!! I got to get a daily dose of Deftones!! NIN are super cool too, Tool as well. Chino, Trent, and Maynard all seem like dark individuals but they are actually very intelligent humans who have a knack for creating great music and lyric.😜
Goddamn this comment takes me back, my buddy had a beat up old Sunfire with a nice stereo and we'd go out to the park at night and have mosh pits outside the car jamming everything from Deftones, to Manson to Cradle of Filth and everything in between!
I managed to knock my rearview mirror off blasting "We're in this together" on my way to college back then, NIN, Deftones, Stabbing Westward, Filter, RATM, good times.
Just like Jane’s Addiction said: “Sex is violent.” Chino voice is sexual personification and the fantasy of this song is just that. Humans are dark and light all at once. This song has always been beautifully dark and it’s amazing. Team Sleep is being born during this song along with Teenager on this album.
The whole White Pony album is pure treasure. I think when you started doing album reactions I recommended this one but I might have just thought about recommending it. Deftones’ full discography is worth checking out
like you said, defones aren't just music, they're an experience. i'm so happy they're making a comeback. i was lucky enough to discover them when i was very young, back in early 00s. listening to them on a tape during humid summer nights, with friends, clear night sky, booze and many things teenagers shouldn't indulge in. deftones make you feel nostalgic, anxious and calm all at the same time. we just sat, listened and looked at the sky. we were young and felt young. never getting that specific moment back, 20+ years later, but the music still wakes up the same feelings.
Tbh most disturbing is definitely arguable, they can get prey dark. Great to see you listening to some Deftones again, they’ve actually had a major uprise in popularity recently & in all for it
Neat fact, the band The Devil Wears Prada have a song called Cancer which was written by the keyboardist. The song deals with finding out someone close to you died and the first thought you think of is: "I hope it was something like Cancer. Something that couldn't be altered or cured." Which is a fucked up thought but the thought digresses deeper and goes "Cancer is a disease that has no cure, no matter what you do, you can't stop it. But something like suicide is still curable. You can still save the person in that sense. So, I hope this person died of cancer instead of something like suicide. So that way I can assure myself that their death isn't my fault and that I didn't do anything to help out." Fucked up thought but such a beautiful track. So yeah.
this song hooked me on deftones back in high school (1999-2003). Still killing it, and bands like Sleep Token have taken the concept and moved it forward.
That's when I was in high school. I turned 16 in fall 2000 and I remember getting white pony as a bday gift and seeing them live that year for the first time. So. Good.
Ahh! This was so fun to watch. I love love love Deftones. Every little thing they do is so creative ✨ Chino has the most captivating vocals 😍and Abe on Drums 👌🏼 All of it ties together so well. I highly recommend you listen to more and also anyone who reads this to see the play live. Such an experience 🥰
Please check out the song Passenger from White Pony. It features Maynard from Tool and is quite possibly my favourite Deftones song. White Pony is one of those albums that is perfect front to back.

It's sad to me that you heard this song after "knowing" what the lyrics "mean". Oh well! At least you heard it. I feel that this song can be what you take from it. Before Genius not all of knew what the full meanings were to songs. We heard what we wanted to and this track is one of the sexiest and painful songs I've ever heard. It reminds me of a particular human that I let get away and now loves someone else. I will probably never get to see them again.
You like this song because it is an amazing song. So many people like this song and have no clue what it is about, which makes it so crazy once they actually know the meaning. It is one of their best (and yes disturbing) songs.
What this band does is just so unique that no one has. Each song can have many different meanings to them. Pretty much telling us as fans what we think the song is about. It can be spot on or completely different and that’s still ok as long as it’s what makes sense to us. Deftones are legendary. Just go on a binge of reacting songs by them like you did with bad omens.
Such a good track!! Probably one of my favourite sounding kits on any song I’ve heard, the snare is so crispy 😩 crazy good and the higher notes Chino does ugh 👌🏻
I always really enjoyed your reactions, even though I understand little English. Now I see that it has a translation into Portuguese. a hug from Brazil!
I effing love the Deftones, remember back in HS going to sleep with my headphones on and had specifically this song on repeat. So there it is, this is Deftones
You are right to me it is quintessential Deftones and yes they are called "Intrusive thoughts" like swerving your car in to traffic or something. They are a clash of styles. Guitarist Steph wants to be as heavy as he can be. Chino loves softer electronica and Depeche mode is a big influence. Abe has huge hip hop influence . If you can't tell they are one of my fav bands ever. You might want to check out Glassjaw. Also by todays lens very misogynistic lyrics but the band is soo hard and his vocals are both beautiful had hard AF to. I might recommend Ape Dos MIl or Pink Roses or Mu Empire. I'd be super curious to hear your takes.
Deftones is the shit man! Glad you reacted to this song. You should try 'Pink Maggit'. First part is kinda disturbing too, but one of the best transitions from calm to power guitars ever. Give it a try. Peace!
Alex, you need to do a deeper dive into Deftones. They are unlike any other band. Truly unique, creative, heavy & mellow...all wrapped into one package. They seem to constantly reinvent themselves without losing their main core, if that makes sense. Check out some earlier songs from Around The Fur & Adrenaline.🤘
as a recently converted deftones fan, i can say for certain that the entire album White Pony is worth checking out if you plan on doing a full album reaction sometime in the future. i've listened to it so many times it almost feels wrong to listen to songs off of it in isolation because every song just flows into each other so naturally (with the exception of back to school, which wasn't even on the original version of the album anyway. best to skip that one).
I remember buying this album when it came out. Rocking this loud, late night sunroof open, summertime. It was a while vibe. Not someone's interpretation of it. Audio interpretation is different for everyone. I've played in bands that covered many of their songs.... God, I hope this didn't kill this song for me. I've never paid attention to lyrics, just dynamics, and when needed guitar lines. 😔 love the reactions man, good work. But please stay away from other's interpretations or assigned meanings. ❤
You definitely need to react to the whole album, White Pony. Every song is a masterpiece. At least the OG track list not the one with Back To School as the opener.
I remember the exact moment I first heard this song in the year 2000 when I was 15. I had a clock radio next to my bed that I used as my alarm for school. Sometimes in the evenings when I was relaxing in my bed I would reach over and flick it on just to see what was on the local rock station. The night I flicked it on and this song was playing it was like I was transfixed and I couldn't even really move until it was over. At that time I had recently heard Change by Deftones for the first time and I was already made an instant fan. But this cemented it.
Been waiting for you to do some more Deftones. Was beginning to loose hope that you’d never come around to it. I think you’d really dig them if you check out a lot of their discography! “7 words”, “engine no.9”, “rosemary” or “Minerva” would be great for the next reaction!!
It's what I loved about the album Angel Dust by Faith No More - the experience. It's probably why I love White Pony by Deftones as you do. Note: I heard Angel Dust first before White Pony as context to the comment.
I love this song by Deftones especially because my friends that taught me alot about how to play drums and bass played this, I'm 19 and they're all 30 or older but they would jam this at their dad's house and the entire house would be shaking. Fun times.🙂
5:00 Somehow one of the most disturbing lines in the song got cut out right here... "You breathed, and then you stopped. I breathed, then dried you off."
This album blew me away when I bought it on release day. I had been listening to them for about 4 years and this shit was so different than anything they had done prior to this, and this track grabbed me. I still love it to this day. I think you need to just get ALL of their albums and listen to them chronologically. They've prolly evolved more than any other band that still makes new music.
I think this is one of Chinos favorite songs, I would say this song is part of the "deftones chefs kiss" but you would have to put a couple more to complete it. We need to do something off of Diamond Eyes
Digital Bath is one of my favorite vocal performances from Chino. So good especially live when he was a young lad. He's still got it but those chords were ripe when he was a young lad. Sextape, Rocket Skates, Risk, Diamond Eyes, Rosemary, Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away), Hole In The Earth, Beware, Cherry Waves, Xerces, Rivière just to name a few are also great options to react to.
i remember reading yeeeeeears ago that a bunch of these twisted songs were written for his partner who had fantasies about being kidnapped, etc.... but i can't be bothereed to look into it to verify that memory ha
Fun fact - the acoustic version of this song was my go to sex song for a long time. It's just so chill, but has a super sexy vibe to it. The lyrics are super vague though. I've never even heard about the killer thing or got that impression from the song. Just sounds like the ramblings of a stoned man. And "tonight I feel like more" could mean a ton of things.
Jeez man, I just ended listening to the "White Pony" album (where Digital Bath is in) of Deftones like 10 minutes ago, now I'd get another experience with you! 🤘🏻💯✨️
One of my previous partners showed me this song so I've always drawn a "Forbidden lovers sneaking down into the basement to sin" meaning from this song, Deftones overall has an ethereal horny energy to their music
Alex, if you want to continue the deep dive, check out Chino's side projects, Palms, Crosses, and Team Sleep. The rabbit hole goes pretty deep, my dude....
Alex, I’ve been binge watching a lot of your videos and I recently watched your Greta Van Fleet reaction from 3 years ago. You should really react to more of their songs, assuming you haven’t already tried to upload more reactions to them.
I dont think I ever paid close attention to the lyrics. I always just listened to the melody. It was another one of those songs that played often enough on KROQ, that I just got used to hearing it in rotation.
Creepy, isn't it? This song made me fall in love with the Deftones - and got me a little obsessed with Chino Moreno, I have to admit. The whole album White Pony is timeless. Even two decades later it just never feels old and it still gives me goosebumps of sheer pleassure. Most songs on the record have this alluring, sexy, dangerous and creepy vibe to them.
Honestly... one of the best introductory talks EVER! 💯🤣 No one is supposed to be be okay with what this song os about... but its HARD not to jam the fuck out to it. 💯😎
I am subscribed, sir. Have been. I've been moving away from reaction channels a bit, but I've been holding on to yours since it seems you hold on to a little bit of intellectual stimulation, so there's that.
You should contact your sleep token journey too and you'll notice some similarities between them and Deftones both very atmospheric and subject matter very similar too. Check out Nazareth and jaws (sleep token) oh yes and that sexy vibe .
You gotta also check out Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)! Its my favorite Deftones song and one of my all time favorite songs. I think youd vibe with it too

She’s not the one, this song has been on my bedroom mix since having to actually make a mixtape on a cassette , I’ve made many Deftones fans lol
Additionally, it should be noted that this album, the majority of White Pony, was an innovative turn for Chino. A great deal of the songs are written from perspectives that aren't his own; they aren't reflecting any personal narrative - only mood and emotion.

Fun times.🙂
Great song, great reaction..thx Alex!
5:00 Somehow one of the most disturbing lines in the song got cut out right here... "You breathed, and then you stopped. I breathed, then dried you off."
Gotta check out "Elite" by them... good stuff.
deftones is love, deftones is life
More deftones please
Reminds me of going through chemotherapy… fighting off antibodies ripping throughout my body. Actually have it on my infusion playlist.
I request of you do another Deftones song, you do Passanger Featuring Maynard James Keenan
Grew up loving Deftones and now my little nephew is asking me about them. What’s old is new !!
Passenger,SexTape,Romantic Dreams, Change, phantom bride. Everything they do 🙌🏼🙌🏼
This whole album was amazing. I liked their 2 prior albums, but White Pony was just.... absolutely beautiful
I would like to see more Deftones reactions like Minerva, Prayers/Triangles, Passenger, Swerve City, Phantom Bride, Tempest
Seen them live many times almost every time they play this there’s one or two couples dancing to the song like it’s romantic
Deftones is the perfect blend of metal testosterone with the vulnerability and queerness of bands like the smiths, echo and the bunny men etc
Im so glad you decided on this song, possibly my fav off of white pony
Love this one! One of my favorite tracks by them! Just vibes. Love listening to it and hanging around the fire pit with my friends drinking
Nice reaction!!! The Next Songs!
Can't get enough Deftones.
Nah “Pink Cellphone” is def more disturbing lol.
“Digital Bath” has always been one of my fave Deftones song tho lol
RIP Chi
Creepy, isn't it? This song made me fall in love with the Deftones - and got me a little obsessed with Chino Moreno, I have to admit. The whole album White Pony is timeless. Even two decades later it just never feels old and it still gives me goosebumps of sheer pleassure. Most songs on the record have this alluring, sexy, dangerous and creepy vibe to them.
Damn! This took me back! the nostalga hit hard!
Honestly... one of the best introductory talks EVER! 💯🤣
No one is supposed to be be okay with what this song os about... but its HARD not to jam the fuck out to it. 💯😎
I feel like in the line “you
I’ve like I want to” is him stuck in his own head and he wants to break out of that state
I am subscribed, sir.
Man, the Deftones - White Pony album legit changed my life. Definitely check out Change (In the House of Flies) & Passenger.
You gotta also check out Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)! Its my favorite Deftones song and one of my all time favorite songs. I think youd vibe with it too
A Masterpiece of a song! Probably their best song!
