Nice day out. No deer again, but hey, good time spent and youre not going home empty handed! That's a lot of beautiful shrums 🍄 Thank You for sharing Age. 👍🏻😎
I liked the new look of your thumbnail, Age. With all the mushrooms you've been collecting I'm hoping there'll be a good mushroom soup recipe video in the future. 😉 Happy hunting. 👍
Thanks, Daryl😁 I had a thumbnail done for this and then I decided to come back and see if I could make one with a little more pop! I guess I'll have to see if I can come up with a mushroom soup recipe before I eat them all😃
If you're out on Vancouver Island again next Fall, there will be plenty of spots to start looking. It's just a matter of stepping into the forests like this one, after the rain comes and they start popping up all over the place.
I thought it was very successful. Loaded up the shotgun in case the mushrooms tried to get away😁 It was a good day out and I love coming home with bags of mushrooms😋😋
@@Truckerjonsoutdoors I should do that for a fun video next time. Blast away and then talk about waiting 20 minutes before going and looking for the mushroom trail😁😁
Well, that was definitely a successful hunt. I have a couple of questions if I may Age. How do these shrooms differ in taste to the normal shrooms you get. White, button, is what we have over here. And how would you use this haul? A big pot of soup? Do they freeze? Best fried? I've only seen them on your channel so I really haven't a clue. Another great video Age, thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Chris😁 Yes, I didn't have to fire one shot to harvest these😃 They have a slight apricot aroma and google says they have a peppery flavor that some people describe as lightly fruity. These mushrooms can only be harvested in the wild. They have not found a way to farm them successfully. I did a number of things with my mushrooms this year (I got some other hauls too). Mainly I can them for future use (they get cut up, boiled, and then put in jars for pressure canning). I also did an olive oil and vinegar marinate with them that I hot bath canned. I did 5 jars of pickled mushrooms that I hot bath can. I dehydrated some and this year I ground them up from that into a powder so that I can add it o homemade soups to give it an umami flavour. Some I dry fried, then added some butter to cook them up, then vacuum sealed them and froze. They are best dry fried and then add butter and a little salt. Eaten fresh. I just can't eat 14 pounds at once, lol😂 As for my general use of them, I make egg wraps in the morning for breakfast so I'll have some mushrooms there. For lunch, I'll make a homemade soup and the mushrooms will be included with other veggies and a meat. Depending on what I'm having for dinner, they may make an appearance there too. They are a healthy addition to my diet so I love to get them when I can.
@agesadventures they certainly are a healthy addition. Pressure canning, Vacuum packed, dehydrated, sounds like you have a great prepper setup there Age, kudos to you. If I picked any shrooms I'd either be tripping or dead. It is great to have that fresh supply. Nice one Age.
@@chrisbentleywalkingandrambling Well, I originally purchased the pressure canner for my soup stocks, stews, and chillis. The jars were cracking in the freezer and I was running out of space in there. So that is how that investment started. The vacuum sealer, a FoodSaver brand, I got for packaging my hunt harvests. Grouse and any deer. I also use it for bulk packages of meats from the grocery store. The dehydrating I do in the oven. I don't have a food dehydrator at this time. I'm just not sure which one to get. I think I'd make good use of one. But you're right, it seems like a prepper setup. It's not so crazy to go down that path if I wanted to ever since we had the pandemic and the crazy shortages that there were. The thing with Chanterelles is that they are very easy to identify. I'm very careful with what I pick up for other types.
Well done Age! Not sure if mushrooms was the side mission or the target species. Either way a good way to make use of time when the game animals arent cooperative.
I didn't need to shoot them😂 This was definitely a side mission that turned into a main mission once I saw how many there were. They are a valuable harvest for me too. I now know where I'll be heading to next year for harvesting.
Yep, he best way to capture mushrooms is to shoot them, lol😁 Yes, there is snow in the mountains there now. The last two weekends there has been snow on the ground up there. It's been wet snow. I'm heading out today to see if there is more. In the city, there is no snow at all. Not cold enough down here yet.
It's smart not to eat anything on the trail if you don't know what type it is. These Chanterelles are very easy to identify. I've seen some other plant this year that I did not know what they were and had to research what they were. Next year if I see those, I'll be harvesting them. Raspberries and apples are a pretty good food to find out there😃😃
Always good to come back from a hunt with something. Four bags of Chanterelle mushrooms is a great haul. Will you preserve them? Or just eat them right away?
Yes, it's nice to bring back food that I'll eat and enjoy😁 Most of these were canned so that I can work my way through eating them. This year I tried marinating the mushrooms in oil and vinegar which were canned. I had a chance to open one recently and it was delicious. I'll be doing more of that next year. I also dehydrated some and them ground them into a powder. You can then add that to soups to give some extra flavour (umami). I did pickle some too and those worked out as well. These mushrooms won't last long, but it's nice to have them while I've got them.
I’m not brave enough to eat anything I find in the wild except maybe raspberries. Four bags full of chanterelles seems like a good amount. Too bad about the wildlife not cooperating on the hunt. 👍5
It's better to be safe with wild stuff until you know for sure it's safe. These mushrooms are pretty easy to identify. Other things, I am much more careful with. Yeah, it's a great amount of mushrooms to have. Next year, I might consider going to buyers and selling them there. We have some around here that will take the whole harvest, as long as they are good mushrooms. These four bags would have paid my gas money for a couple trips out there. The wildlife really prefer not to cooperate, if they can manage not to😂 That's ok. I get to spend the time out in the forest😁
jackpot! beautiful hike and you found so many more mushrooms. you must have a lot of recipes or do you pickle/can them all like in that previous episode? cheers, age! 🛴❤
It really is a great area for mushrooms in there! Had I been expecting to find that many, I would have gone in with 5 gallon pails. No special recipes for them. I usually cook them with my food. So, I'll can most of them. Some of them I dehydrated and then ground into powder. It can now be added to soups to give some flavour. I took some and tried marinating them and it worked out really well. So next time I'll be canning some marinades. I did do 5 jars of pickled mushrooms as well this year. I go through quite a lot of mushrooms, so I'll always need more😃😃
@@agesadventures i know they shrink a lot as cooked, but i am awed that you are able to eat all of them with the volume you forage. it's impressive. you could always tie a ribbon around some jars you pickle, and you got holiday gifts! 😁
@@scootladychicago I usually have them with each meal so it's easy to go through a lot. When you boil them for canning, you can fit about 1 pound per 1/2 pint jar. They do shrink quite a bit. I could give them away as gifts, but I don't have enough for that this year😁
Whoa! Forget the deer, get the shrooms. What a great haul!
