Sometimes it's better to just make a usable tool than a work of art. That's as good as I could do!
That was a great job… even for someone with a lot of experience!!! I have restored a few axes by using vibratory tumblers and sharpening with a file in a vise. I modified handles to fit them and finished them with paracord as well. Beautiful job on everything!! Well done sir!! The Old Army Scout…

Amazing job. Working on my first restoration now. I don't have much experience with this but I do with wrapping handles. One suggestion I have is to lay the initial length of cord on the belly of the axe rather than the side. That way, the double layer is in front of the axe providing an extra layer of protection. It also helps to blind index the axe better since you won't have a bulge on one side. I always lit a small fire with some shavings in a soup can to fire harden things, but had the idea to try a torch. Glad to see it worked nicely for you, I'm sold.
That’s some solid advice, I’ll definitely try that for the next one. I’d suggest a bigger lighter or even a blow torch! Anyway, best of luck!
Love the paracord wrap. I always smack that part of the axe so it will add some protection.

Perfect, I’m fixing to work on a couple similar, I found in my dads shed. I been trying to find a good video one making a sheath, or axe mask though. Can’t wait!

Good job. Don’t forget to do the wedge end with the BLO also. It helps keep the head tight. It will soak up quite a lot of oil

Enjoyed the video. I'm looking at working on an ax of mine, as well as a shovel, and hoe.
One thing though, paracord disolves when exposed to the elements.
And I always think of that scene in Woody Allens movie "Take the money and run" where he's on the chain gang, and the head falls off his sledge hammer.

Any tips for free-handing the edge geometry? DO you go for a 20 to 25 degree on your axe edge or just go for what feels right for splitting? I have always have trouble with free-hand sharpening

Good job man not taking all the patina out of it was the right move axes have their oun personalities and if you take everything out of it its just another axe
It's time to hang a new handle on that. I do appreciate your work and attention to detail, but from the start, that handle isn't safe. One good hard whack on a stubborn log could mean a lot of pain in your future. For your sake, get a new handle. Otherwise, I really do like the attention you gave the axe

I wouldn't trust that crack handle mate.
So far she’s held up but you’re right. Maybe a new handle is in the near future 👍
the rope would trap moisture, and the axe would rust.
Maybe if HE leaves it outside, neglected between use, which he’s not likely to do after all this hard work. On your axe, do what you want.😎
You should have replaced the handle. It will break with tough use. The paracord won’t stop that.
That just maybe be something I do in the future.
