- The biggest fraud in anime, more specifically Bleach is the shinigami lieutenant of the sixth division Renji Abarai! I will be going over Renji's character as a whole, up to and including his new bankai, Renji's true bankai Soo Zabimaru. From Renji vs Ichigo to Renji vs Byakuya, to Renji vs Mask de Masculine; even as far back as his kid days in the spiritual arts academy! It's all here, and its all terrible! Renji sucks!

Toshiro actually gets Ws and ends up reaching the level of the strongest Shinigami Zaraki Kenpachi. so he's not a bigger fraud than Renji. Renji got trained by Squad Zero and couldn't even hope to take on the Shutstaphal(?) yet Toshiro just needed to have his flower petal brake and fully mature his body. And Kubo stated he had that design for Toshiro from pretty much the begining. Upon getting his mature form he goes up massively in power, being able to flash freeze a post Bankai Kenpachi enhanced Gerard Valkyrie. He also manages to stop all the damage from reaching the Seireitei.

Yeah. Toshiro had a grand total of TWO wins in the entire series. One against a mook, which he required both bankai and his limiter removed to beat, and one against a child who was weak as fuck (much like basically all the fullbringers were). Though at least he didn't need his bankai to beat the middle schooler.

There are actually 5 lieutenants that have Bankai: Renji, Shuhei, Ikkaku, Rukia (she learned Bankai as a lieutenant) and Chojiro (but he got no diff’d by Soul Society Ichigo). But screw all that, Isane and Tetsuzaemon for all we know don’t even have a Bankai, the only new captain I believe has a Bankai is Lisa because she be fighting and got the Visored buff (not that any of the captains that have the Hollowfication use it after the Aizen invasion).
10 years has passed, they could've easily archived it during that time frame, expecially with kyoraku pressing them to do so in order to fill the missing spots

Calling Renji a fraud is crazy when Toshiro exists.
The boy who needed bankai in literally every single fight after his first one, minus the time he fought a 12 year old who was weak as fuck? Yes. He's hyped up and his zanpakuto is allegedly the strongest ice type in existence, suggesting it's on par with Ryujin Jakka (or at least in the same rough ballpark). His bankai's ultimate technique is about on par with Ryujin Jakka's regular shikai techniques. And he needs his super duper bankai squared to approach Zanka no Tachi. Dude, you should not need both bankai and your limiter removed to match a goddamn MOOK!
It becomes funnier when you recall that Kubo once stated that Toshiro has had bankai since before he graduated the shinigami academy.

Ok, I gave you your watch time, now I get to nitpick.
1: I can forgive Renji’s initial loss to Ichigo, considering that that not only is Ichigo a certified Him who took out a Menos Grande with a borrowed fucking sword, but also Aizen’s personal Eugenics project on how thoroughly busted a single individual can be. Remember, even all the way back here Ichigo’s Quincy powers were actively nerfing him until he got his true Zanpakuto. Even back in chapter 1 Ichigo had enough latent spiritual pressure to almost completely block out Rukia’s senses. Renji loosing here was just the natural order, even if it looked like fucking clown behavior at the time.
2: Hihio Zabimaru being a fake Bankai made sense. You take a look at the soul society as a whole, not just Renji but basically anyone you want. Genuinely, take your pick. Anyone and everyone is practically glued to their traditions and more prideful than fucking Vegeta. So when Renji, who’s been your bog standard Soul Reaper to this point, tries to take a SHORTCUT to achieve bankai, of fucking course Zabimaru would give him a half-assed fake. Any Soul Reaper who tried that bitch shit would’ve gotten thoroughly mauled by their Zanpakuto spirit. If anything, it’s a miracle Renji got his fake bankai at all, even if it was hot garbage.
3: The W against De Masculine was deserved. How many arrogant shithead kids have you stomped in a video game because they tried coming at you with a Meta setup they didn’t know how to use? Same thing. This shithead should’ve lost when he deafened himself to dodge Rojuro’s bankai, but Kubo was Hating and refused to let any Visored get W, then healed this Grade A+ fumbler with the power of pure unfiltered plot. Him nuking his own power up is just Kubo putting his foot down and taking away his plot armor. Renji just finished the job.
You can trash on him for that shit in the Hell arc though that was inexcusable.
ehh even then Renji goes down to protect his daughter and gets caught by Szayel who NO ONE could sense was coming. WITH the chains of hell. Yeah this is the least problematic L in the whole show.
Renji didn't take a shortcut to bankai though? He explicitly said that he was close to gaining bankai and just used those few days to finish up.

This pink haired clown show was one of Renji’s only fights against a proper threat and this was the chance for him to get some kind of getback, show how he had progressed since the audience had last seen him, but there he stood, taking the L and getting saved by Ichigo, Again, and then this Glasses wearing dumbass who’s name is just a nightmare to spell gets Yoinked by (who we can assume is) Jushiro straight back to Hell with no sign or a Renji W. Tragic.

Despite being a single sword, Renji’s Zanpakuto spirit is dual aspected, like Katen Kyoketsu or Sogyo no Kotowari. Renji, on his power leveling grindset, failed to truly understand that bankai isn’t just a new level of power for your sword, it’s a higher level of bond and understanding with the sword’s spirit and yourself. Remember, Ichigo couldn’t unlock his full power without learning of his own origins and recognizing that the one he acknowledged as Zangetsu was a Phony. Of course Renji pulled out that half assed garbage. And before you say it, yes I know certain Zanpakuto take on different appearances for their Shikai and Bankai. That doesn’t change the fact that Renji got less then half of what he Should’ve when he pulled Hihio Zabimaru out of his ass. Imagine finding out that your bankai is actually just one move from your proper true bankai strapped to what’s left of your Shikai. Renji’s mistake was thinking that every Bankai was like Ichigo’s or Byakuya’s, just a souped up version of what your Shikai does.

Renji is still my favorite Bleach character. I like that he's an underdog and provides emotional support to Ichigo and Rukia. I think reducing characters to battle stats would make a lot of characters boring or fraudulent.

My understanding of gentei kaigo is that it’s only a restriction on lieutenants and captains level reiatsu. Also, the arancar that Rukia defeats is played down as a dumbass with a big ego. Likewise, she catches him off guard, and quickly shatters him in a column of ice. The stuff about hi-hio sabimaru is legitimately funny though. Renji is a disgrace (as has been described by Byakuya Kuchiki), but it’s not as bad as you describe.
Speaking of Renji's shitty Bankai, I love how the very chapter where Kubo revealed that Bankai can never be fixed, he had to make FOUR exceptions and one was completely wrong anyway. Toshiro: "Oh well, it's only the ice that's damaged so it can be fixed." Komamura: "His heals alongside him." Mayuri: "Ah yeah, he just like modifies it or something to make up for the fact it's destroyed every single time he uses it." Renji: "Oh, it's still missing the links Byakuya destroyed." Are you sure? Cuz Byakuya didn't break a few links. He threw the whole damn thing through a woodchipper. All Renji had left was the handle. It was still fine for the next 500ish chapters

Kenpachi got beaten by Ichigo before bankai, that sounds pretty fraudulent to me based on your criteria. Byakuya got beaten by an infant Ichigo and got clarted by As Nodt. Rukia was gonna get beaten by As Nodt as well and did nothing but fight the weakest Espada to a draw in the previous arc. She also was the only one who didn't hand their respective fullbringer their own ass.

Toshiro is the real fraud. He rarely wins fights, and always has to use Bankai to do so.
I mean, Renji won exactly two fights before the timeskip: One against first arc Uryu and another that required bankai, limiter release, and being saved by a ten year old. Post timeskip, he got two more. One against the weak as hell fullbringers, and a real win against Mask.

Renji honestly isn't a fraud, but he definitely gets into fights that he doesn't stand a chance in.
He lost to the MC, which everyone did at some point. At least in the first fight, he was nerfed to 1/5th of his power.
He claimed to have been lucky in beating Ilfordt, which is hilarious because that's a Gillain level Arrancar. I think this was his worst moment since we saw Rangiku just straight-up body one of them once she stood back up lol
Against the 8th Espada, he was out-matched and this was to be expected since his Bankai was deactivated for half of the fight, and the Espada are repeatedly stated to be captain-level and the Vasto-Lorde class are stronger than captains. I don't shame him for this loss.
The Yammy 0 reveal was utter trash and I think it was terrible writing and the Espada from that point onwards were tossed to the way-side. They were dominating their fights in base-form and then I guess Harribel accidentally pressed the "Nerf Espada" button when she released since they all struggled after going full power.... Anyways, I guess I'm trying to say I wish Yammy was still the 10th and used to show how strong Rukia, Renji and Chad really were, and they could actually defeat an Espada.... and also the top 3 should not have been nerfed so heavily, especially when the Vizards show up to help anyways.

He lost to the Sternritter when Byakuya was also being bodied. Other Lieutenants were losing their fights in situations they were outnumbering the sternritter. For Byakuya and Renji, it was 2v2, so I'm really not going to make fun of him for that lmao.
He beat James, which is a good showing. He then went on to fight Bazz-B with Rukia assisting him, and no one won since Bazz had his powers stripped from him, but to be able to stale-mate Bazz is commendable since he withstood Yamamoto's flames and later defeated Shikai Toshiro with virtually no effort... and could mess up the bambis.
Rukia didn't have the seal tho? That's for Captains and Vices. Let's also not act like the Arrancar were some stray hollows that got lost in the world of the living.

& the fact that mask needed to resort to using his strongest attack which would have obliterated James regardless due to the fact that james is constantly clinging to mask JUST cuz he was scared of renji proves why Renji won that fight fair.
the only fights he lost were against Byakuya, espada 8 & ichigo (which doesn’t make him a fraud) and he beat ishida (in his first appearance), Jackie (without shikai) the arrancar & Mask. giving him more W's than L's.
Both Byakuya and unohana praised his strength despite him not even awaking his true power in TYBW.

Renji before the timeskip has exactly TWO wins. The first was against Uryu in the first arc (so, when Uryu was bitch level). The second was against one of Grimmjow's mooks, which required his bankai, releasing his limiter, and being saved by a 10 year old girl. Him defeating Jackie easily doesn't demonstrate how powerful he was but how weak the Fullbringers actually were.
Side note: If Momo wasn't Toshiro's childhood friend, she'd be more irrelevant than Iba, a man you could remove from the series without changing anything or anyone noticing.
