I'm at the break part way through and I agree with everything you guys are saying, but I hope you realize there is an additional quite deep level of poignancy involved in this. His dad, who was iconic in early country music, drank himself to death by a fairly young age, and it cut a blossoming fantastic career short. At one point Hank senior was just writing songs on trains and showing up late to recording sessions and saying here it is, it's in the key of G boys! And they'd run through it a couple times and record it, and within a week or two it will become yet another charting hit. It was astounding.
This is why this song has been played 8 billion times in bars and Juke joints all over the country. For so many years. It affects people strongly from different Generations, and there's just so much pain and sorrow in that family's experience. Everybody sings at the top of their lungs when this song comes on at the bar in a really hopping joint.

The best concert I ever went to was in 1983 in my Hometown of Wilmington. NC. It was during the Azelea Festival, the up and coming group Alabama was the Opening act for Hank Williams JR. I was working as a College Student Usher and I was just a few feet from the stage. Hank Williams JR explained the song. He was saying that he was proud of his dad, but he was different from his dad, He had started off his career singing his dads songs but he was singing his own music which was part of the Outlaw Country Genre. He was being criticized for his lifestyle and he was saying his dad had a similar reputation.
Both Alabama and Hank Williams JR were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash were Hank William Jrs Godparents, Hank Williams Jr was mentored by Johnny Cash.

A country artist I feel you should do is Patty Loveless and her cover of "You'll Never Leave Harlen Alive". Patty is retired but was one of the best voices in country music. There's a video of her singing this while wearing a pale blue dress it is one of the best because she gives a little introduction to the song where she explains why she sings it from the heart. Patty is country as grits and cornbread.
You should also do some of Hank Sr's songs, the songs are 70-75 years old but as popular today as they were in the 40s and 50s, Start off with "Hey Good Lookin'", "Lovesick Blues", "Jumbalaya", "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", "Move It On Over". Maybe you'll understand why the hillbilly Shakespeare is considered the king of country and has never lost his crown.

When Jr started singing, he was singing his daddy's songs. I didn't care for it, but I loved his daddy when he originally sang them. When Jr changed and started singing his own music, I loved it. Some of that family tradition was the drinking and smoking like his daddy did. Have you checked out Sr's music.

Another great Hank, Jr. song about relating to his daddy is a duet with Waylon Jennings, "The Conversation". Hank, Sr. was born with Spinal Bifida and was in constant pain which he would self-medicate with drugs and alcohol, especially Morphine. When Hank, Jr. he was already having some substance abuse, but after he had his fall that others have mentioned, he got in that same lifestyle.

I think if you knew a bit more about Hank senior you would hear these lyrics a different way. When the old guy died, a very young Hank JR, like preteen young, was paraded around singing his daddies songs, while other people got rich. He was a regular cash cow for music exects and family members. He alienated many people, including his fans, when he broke away, rebelled, and started doing things is way. And singing his own songs.

I certainly wouldn't want any new singers to just be exactly copycatting any classic Country-Western Music singers redoing songs as that wouldn't sound good at all but I would really love if every single new singer that is falsely labeled "country" these days would just have authentic genuine Country sound in their new song & then & only then could I actually listen & enjoy their very own new songs & not feel sick & not feeling like throwing up. Hank Jr. is 1 of my very all-time Favorites as he Is REAL Country-Western music with lots of Blues & Jazz mixed in as well as Rock but NO pop.

Hank is really a brilliant musician and writer. Hank plays guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and steel guitar to various degrees lol. I love his music, but I have only one issue with him. In his later years his live performances are different. He tends to change the lyrics and even sometimes the melody when he is performing live. Maybe he gets bored too easily. So much great music though. He was only a little kid when his dad passed (Sr was 29 when he died). He grew up around musicians and became close friends with Cash, Nelson, Jennings, Kristofferson, Jones and all those great stars.

The interesting thing about your discussion is that Hank Jr. was apparently criticized for his departure from traditional country to a more rock-and-roll sound in his music. It's not as apparent to younger ears because of how much further "country" has drifted toward a more rock sound today, but his music was edgier than generations before him. Compare his dad's sound to his, for instance.

Corporate country music would not allow Hank is and music on the radio today or even make a record. In fact. There are country music legends that I do not believe that corporate country would not allow today.
