To everyone about the bus driver: It will depend on whether or not they were at fault. In 1974 my friend was on a bus in London and a taxi cut in front and immediately stopped. The bus driver couldn't help hitting the back of the taxi. It was totally the taxi driver's fault and there was a bus load of witnesses. It was only a fender bender and after exchanging details the bus continued its journey. I would guess that the driver would not have faced any consequences but might have been given the rest of the day off. However, turn it round to an accident where the bus driver is at fault and at the very least he'll face a disciplinary enquiry and if grossly negligent could be dismissed on the spot for gross misconduct.
Something like hitting a bollard that causes superficial damage probably has minimal consequences for the bus driver. It probably happens somewhere in the US every day. Something like a fatal accident would probably lead to dismissal if at fault and a lot of support from the employer if not at fault. Like any other driver, a bus driver will be breathalysed if he is involved in an accident to which the police attend and will be prosecuted if he fails, even if he is the not at fault driver, and also he will be summarily dismissed.
Bus drivers are subject to the law but also protected by it. Even if the bus is written off, the bus driver is not liable if he is found not to be at fault, either immediately or after an investigation. When an investigation is needed to establish fault, it is likely that the driver would be suspended on full pay.
