It's so insidious to offer people the "opportunity" to get something when the supply of that thing is limited. Like making 100 people fight to the death and only the winner gets to eat, then calling it fair and generous because you're giving 100 people the opportunity to live. This language is deceptive under any circumstances but when people are in direct competition with one another for the "opportunity" it just becomes unforgivably cruel.
