    This is what we call Americana music. This is true Country fans turn to for new music today.
    This is a cover of a John Hartford song. Hartford was a true artist who is best remembered for writing and first recording Gentle On My Mind that became a monster hit for Glen Campbell.

      You are 100% correct but they have been adopted by the Americana audience. Americana is more of an umbrella term that covers a lot. The best Country like this, that is completely ignored by the mainstream Country media outsiside of the Southwest, has actually found a home with the Americana audience. But genres be damned, there are only two kinds of music...good and bad. And the Turnpike Troubadoyrs are good.. DAMN GOOD!!!

    This song was written by John Hartford who also wrote Gentle on my Mind. This song is about working barges on the Illinois River from Pekin, Illinois to Alton, Illinois. (I live about 35 miles from the river.) Not floats to tubes. I believe Hartford worked the River for a while. You should get to know the Troubadours since the are from Oklahoma. They are the most awesome band.

      While the Troubadours here did a great job here, I love his original from the Mark Twang album. Definitely worth checking out by him are: I'm Still Here [the version from the Housing Project album], and This Eve of Parting which was featured in the movie Lady Bird just a few years ago. It almost goes without saying that Gentle on My Mind by Glen Campbell is a MUST listen.

    • @davidwhite925
      @davidwhite925 Год назад +2

      Yeah. It's about working on tow boats and big giant barges moving grain, gravel, chemicals, and lots of other things up and down the Illinois River which flows into the Mississippi. It's about the life of folks who work hard moving huge loads of stuff in that river system. It's a great song that's been recorded and performed by a lot of artists. But it's not about a relaxing float on a nice day.

      Not a lot of jobs back then except hard labor for an 18 year old country boy. He was a student at A&M. He was always learning. He cleaned bedpans at a local hospital. He got a job as Surveyor one summer. Then came an official WW2 Invitation. He tried signing up to become a Naval pilot, but they told him he'd failed the test. He said, "Well, I'll go home and memorize it tonight and I'll be back tomorrow!". The officer said, "Son, if you're coming in too low, you would want us to wave you off, wouldn't you?". Dad said Yes Sir. "And if there was an accident and the deck was covered in people trying to clear the deck, you would want us to wave you off wouldn't you?" Dad said, "Yes sir, I see what you mean". You see, Dad failed the color chart, he was color blind. Such a skinny goober. So he opted for the medical corp. He dipped ice cream, had his books open to study while he dipped in Houston then. The day he graduated he and a friend were walking down the sidewalk and everybody stepped back and saluted. He returned the salute then whispered to his friend, "Why is everyone saluting us"? His friend said, "We're Officers now dummy"! Such a skinny goober.
      His first ship experiences were full of goober stories. But the one where his ship was headed into battle, harm's way, he lucked out. It broke down in the harbor and had to be towed back to shore. Another ship had to take its place and on it a childhood friend. That ship, his friend on board, was sunk by a torpedo. He always said, "I've been so lucky in my life..... but you've got to show up for luck to happen to you."

    Check out 'Choctaw Bingo' by James McMurtry. Either the album cut or the 'Live in Aught-Three' version--the album cut has some wonderful keys, but the live version has a great intro.
    One of the most Oklahoma songs ever recorded. Given your guys' age, I expect you'll recognize most of the landmarks in the song--that is to say they all existed in the late 90s and 00s, but most of them are gone now.
    But even if you don't remember the McDonald's on the Will Rodgers Turnpike or the Rolling Stones lips in Baxter Springs, you'll still recognize the landscape.
    And I heartily second "Gin, Smoke, and Lies" for the Troubadours.

    You have reacted so well to the different people I grew up with through my music. Thanks for introducing me to your growing up background. Music is the KEY to helping us understand each other. Love what you do 😊

    Welcome to Americana music. Some great artists in this genre. Check out Hurricane or Look at Miss Ohio by Band of Heathens. And similar but more rock would be Drive-by Truckers. Check out Marry Me by them.

    Turnpike Troubadours' Before the Devil Knows We're Dead is a sure thing. If you both don't like it, I'll eat my hat... heck, half my wardrobe, because I'm that certain!

    Y'all gotta do more bluegrass reacts! I know this isn't really bluegrass with the electric guitar and drums. But John Hartford, who wrote this song, is a bluegrass icon!

    Just have to recommend Arlo Guthrie's "City of New Orleans". You may even be familiar with it once you hear it.

    Americana music is awesome because it gets away from the stifling of creativity that happens so much in corporate music. There's a lot of refugees from country who release their new stuff as Americana just so they have more freedom.
