Alfa Zach, in a way yes, I'm for real. Practicing in a way that pushes your skill set as much as possible to the point of mastery. It may not take 10,000 hours. I was referencing Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 hour rule to prove a point: in order to become ultra-skilled at anything you must first put in the time. If you cut corners it will show as deficiencies in your play.
Alfa Zack, I don't see why not. Just make sure you practice the right way. That is, focus on your weaknesses. Make sure, as a drummer, to study all the rudiments. Rudiment knowledge builds the strongest foundations for us drummers. And study the greats. They show us all the way.
I can tell you this, it has a lot to with ghost notes and how to manipulate them. It takes A LOT of practice to get that down packed. It has taken some people years to master it...
