I personally feel like his comments were more towards international football. He knows we love him at Liverpool. But everytime he plays internationally, his own countrymen criticize his captainship constantly. Must be quite draining.

Unless his body fails him, we cannot sell van dijk, football has changed look at Thiago silva playing till the age he played at mostly off his defensive IQ that he’s developed over the years. VVD can still be a great defender even if he loses his pace

If you take James Milner as an example, when he 'retired' from international football he improved as a player for us. Why would Virgil not be the same?

I think Virgil and Trent were badly affected by Klopp's departure. Even as a fan I am struggling to be excited by the new season. I wouldn't blame them if they want to go. Trent going wouldn't bother me but Virgil would leave a massive void. To lose Milly, Henderson, Klopp and Virgil within such a short period would be catastrophic in my opinion, that leaves us with one proper leader who knows the club well, Robbo.

VVD is consistent for LFC, the inconsistency is in his partner ships - Konate & Matip were always injured and Quansah is inexperienced.

Succession planning is always wise, particularly with players on the wrong side of 30. And it would be prudent to manage Virgil's minutes in order to get the best out of him when he is playing.
I'm not particularly wedded to the idea that we need a left-footed CB. I'm just not convinced footedness of the CB particularly matters. On the wings, absolutely, but middle of the pitch it just doesn't strike me. Of course, I am open to data suggesting otherwise or meta changes within the game that lead to conclusions that left-footedness particularly among CBs is valuable.
For my money, our nailed-on CBs going into this season are:
    Virgil
    Konate
    Quansah
    Gomez
Gomez is a swiss army knife of sorts, can do reliable bits across the backline. If the all the fullbacks stay fit (god willing), you'd imagine he'd see more time at CB than he did last year, which is fine by me.
Konate/Quansah may as well be 2a/2b (with Virgil as the undisputed #1). Both are quality, but differ in that Konate is injury prone and it should be sort of expected that Quansah might have a bit of a sophomore slump. Hopefully he doesn't and he continues his rise but I think, as a fanbase, we need to prepare for the possibility that there might be some slight regression - just the sort of thing that happens. Ideally, Konate stays fit and Quansah gets reps to supplant Virgil as the LCB, allowing Virgil the rest he desires and deserves in non-big games.
I think we need at least one reliable CB as an incoming transfer, someone young with potential to become a world beater. Why I wouldn't be as high on someone like Calafiori is that I'd imagine he wants to be a starter. So we need a younger player who is fine with bedding in, being a rotational option at the moment as he grows into being a long-term future starter. I'm not enough of a wonk to know /who/ that sort of player is, but that's the profile I'd be after.
I don't trust Nat Philips. I know reports are that Sepp VDB wants a move - can't blame him! Generally, footballers want to play football. Can't fault him for wanting to start elsewhere versus being depth/rotational/loan fodder here. But I hope we get a real good look at him in the pre-season and if it seems like he's made some real strides after being in Germany, particularly with on the ball quality, then I'd love if it we can convince him to do at least the first half of the season here. If it doesn't work out and he's not playing, then loan / sell in the winter in order to do right by the player.
I'm not usually one to comment, especially on RUclips, so hopefully this isn't a word salad and has at least some coherence to it

Managing his minutes will be crucial if we want to get another 3 good years out of him. The problem with signing someone as back up (even more so a left footed one) is the game time you are providing. Lets say Virgil needs to be rotated 1 every 3 PL game and for cup games, thats not a lot of minutes for a young talented centre back we should look to attract. Given the other center back position is already covered by Konate/Quansah/Gomez thats even less opportunities to play. Maybe the answer would be to move on Tsimikas and sign a left footed cb who can also play left back (see Gvardiol/Ake/Calafiori) but its a rare and expensive profile

VVD is no idiot, intelligent human, he didn't need to wittness Hendo's departure and attitude when leaving to know, how not to do it. His comment is the start of how to depart as captain properly. I have no idea but I'm guessing that in the next two years he'd love two goes at the CL, which will lead into the world cup and perhaps that will be his departure from top class football. We wave him off from Anfield to the world cup, that's class. I love our captain

My view is he should go now and the first year of Slot should be seen as transitional and a top 4 finish is the target. Get his huge wages off the books, remove the contract problem and get Guehi in alongside Quansah. being honest VVD is not an on the pitch captain and last year he couldn't stop the rot when thing went on the slide or when we kept conceding first all season.
