Brilliant compositions.Beautiful keyboard work.Thank you Dave for your breath taking work all through the years. You were the best of them all.Sadly missed.
Been a Stranglers fan for almost 40 years. I do love the Norfolk coast. Holkham, Wells-Next-The-Sea, Sheringham, Cromer. Been all over the World but can't beat it.
Same here, been all over the world but feel privileged to be an offspring of Norfolk, with wide wild horizons and remote deserted beaches. Not such a bad place, to experience lockdown. ;)
~ wicked... Have steered away from for obvious years ; but... this is just amazing to stumble across ~ pure STRANGLERS ~ I'm surprised and delighted , Old codger Adz
I'd have loved to have heard Cornwell do this. It has every other signature of the Stranglers-awesome arpeggio keys-wall rocking bass-solid, inornate beat, beach boys woos.
Watching them A few years back in Liverpool, I remember seeing Dave playing through the main keyboard segment of tank with one hand, while downing a pint with the other. Amazing sight. Watching them again in Warrington last night was amazing as always, but it was definitely a melancholy affair seeing them without him
I do believe Hugh has the superior quality voice and I was sad about the parting of ways Yet I'm still glad the band carried on after he split They've done some great songs since.
He has. As you said, 'A Stranger'. A very talented bloke. No doubt about that that. NEVER though as he been on an album as brilliant as Rattus and No more Heroes. He plays them and he plays them well. It's not the real Stranglers though is it? Now it's just one original with three session players! Hugh walked out at exactly the right time. They became a joke after that. Never mind though, We'll l keep playing songs written by Hugh.@@finylvinyl66
I don't think you'll find Dave played all these complicated runs at the beginning and through the song. It would be a programmed or preset sound on his keyboard I imagine similar to the start of JLNOE on the Meninblack album. He would have been knackered playing all those notes at that speed!. One of my favourite tracks and the beginning of the resurgence of the Stranglers classic sound again on this track and the album of the same name.
@@DELTATURBO nearly everyone else would use a sequencer or arpeggiator for that stuff but Dave's signature style was that he could do it all live, now this track may have used one but it's quite a bit simpler than things he'd done in the past, very effective though great track
Baz never did lead vocals on Norfolk Coast. Baz and JJ had to remix Suitexv1 after Paul left and they have both shared the vocal duties on Giants as well and most probably on their next album as well. They will be show casing four or five new songs on their March tour.
Muse had already released their debut EP (98) before JJB had moved to the Norfolk Coast (99) and started writing this album; by the time this album was released (04) Muse had already had their 2nd album get to no.3 and their 3rd to no.1.
To be fair Clive, the last two or three Stranglers albums with Hugh involved were a little insipid for my taste, nothing like the power displayed here. The addition of Baz Warne in 2000, a far more competant and confident guitarist, led to the resurgence, and I very much doubt Hugh would have brought much to this JJ composed song. Hugh does what he does and The Stranglers eventually became a massively powerful live band again in his absence.
@@richardjamieson6681 Baz may be more robotically competent but Hugh has so much more flair ... i know what i prefer although Baz has done a fantastic job in my eyes,
@@ECCENTRICERIC69 I don't find anything remotely robotic about Baz playing to honest, particularly live. He flows better, has better timing and phrasing, shows a far greater grasp of touch and just as importantly is largely a stranger to mistakes, something that was always a huge disappointment to me on the many occasions I saw Hugh perform with The Stranglers. Hugh's playing is unusual and quirky I'll grant you but even he would accept that he's never moved much beyond 'adequate' on the instrument and struggles live. His finest moments, which I've always enjoyed, are from the recording studio where glitches and mistakes are easily dealt with. :-)
@@richardjamieson6681 That is your opinion but not mine . i also prefer Hughs snarling vocals and the exciting but dangerous on stage chemistry between Hugh and JJ.
@@ECCENTRICERIC69 Thats all it ever is on here. Opinions, and that's what makes it interesting! I loved the first 5 Stranglers albums with Hugh and the gigs I saw in conjunction with them (mistakes aside), but after that it was diminishing returns. Hugh lost his snarl, as did the rest of the band and only really got it back in the last 20 years or so. 'Norfolk Coast' was the first Stranglers album I really liked since 'The Meninblack'. Best to you E69!
Listen to those keyboards - RIP Dave Greenfield, thanks for all the incredible sounds.
Sure will miss you Dave
Dave greenfield, the difference between a very good band, and a stunning band.

It’s a lovely place even though people from the area are sometimes called inbred, I love it there
Nodge born and bred, nothing beats a nice day at Cromer or Wells next the sea.
Norfolk boys never really leave the coast-can't beat it indeed

Baz Warne deserves a lot more praise. Great track.
every stranglers songs are fucking awesome!
can't say that about many bands .they are good
Roberts era.. brilliant. Warne era.. brilliant. Hugh era.. brilliant. #meninblack ❤❤❤❤❤⚡⚡🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for keeping the band alive.
Baz Warne had big shoes to fill and he did it so well! Appreciate Hugh for what he was but he chose to leave. Love Baz...
Baz is the lead singer the Stranglers should have had from day one, I love him, he brought the band back to life.

This should be re-released as a single.. with a decent live version of 'Tank' as the flipside! Think about it.. ;)
It's a TOP Track. Gives me the impression it would sound great in a fast paced action movie.

The bass sound is absolutely magnificent!

+lanslater thats a much nicer comment id definitely agree with rather than your death threat earlier. what a thug.
your pink elephant is wilting for you at the back door amigo
Brilliant album
This song gives me a lot of 'Raven' era Stranglers. Maybe 'Black and White' too. Very good. This is my first time listening.
Outstanding album! Listened to this many times, have never tired of it.
Best song on a really good album.
I Don't Agree!

Their best song ever is "Duchess", if you ask me.
Jeezus what a great track!
Very good impersonation of good old Hugh!
Christ almighty! I can't stop playing this tune! It's fuck'n great ;)
Nothing but good stuff from the boys.
Best record from a timeless band PHENOMENAL
I think "Black & White" is their best album, but I love all their early stuff.
@@LarzGustafsson I like all their music larz one amazing band

So again best stranglers record in years.. but it’s been years
Brilliant tune
Off to see them in march 2024. Still brilliant , still got it.
There's only one of them now and three tribute players. Were the tickets quarter price?
Baz Warne has been a Stranger longer than Hugh Cornwell and he is great!

This sounds like The Editors. Not The Strangler's more punk stuff of 70s or more poppy songs of 80s
purr, purr, purr, purr (and tigers aren't supposed to be able to do that. Well, not until now.)

With Hugh Cornwell at the helm this could have been something great. His replacement sings like he's in an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
