- In this video, I tell you about 5 common symptoms of a bad alternator in a car. These are symptoms that you will commonly see if your alternator needs to be replaced or will need replacing soon. With that being said, there are other things that would cause these symptoms to appear, so don't automatically assume that it's a bad alternator. Instead, you should look into the situation a bit further before making any decisions.

Always check to see if the alternator belt is broken, missing or loose before you pay a lot of money to replace your alternator. Sometimes the belt has just gotten stretched out, is worn or is broken. It would be a real bummer to replace the alternator when all you needed was a new belt. Always start with the cheapest, easiest things to fix first. Sometimes you get lucky.
I just put in a remanufactured alt in two days ago and now it's failing. I got warranty but prob just gonna buy a brand new this time. My belt still look good, don't see any loose wires..

Also check the alternator fuse, which is typically in the fuse/relay box under the hood in vehicles that have an alternator fuse. My Sonata has an alternator that needs replacement. The first indication was the battery light coming on in the instrument panel - intermittently at first, coming on and going off randomly. Then, it came on and stayed on. I drove to the store, and when I came out and tried to start the car, it wouldn't start, as the battery was drained. I got a jump with some booster cables and tried to drive it back home. I made it about half a mile away from my house when the power gave out. The lights got dimmer and dimmer and the wipers started going very slowly, and then, when the juice was gone, the car stalled. So I left the car on the side of the road and walked the rest of the way home with my 6-year-old daughter.

Pay attention to the warning lights in your instrument panel, instead of being chronically optimistic and ignorant about vehicular mechanics. If your battery light comes on, then you should probably get an electrical/charging system eval at a shop.
My sonata did the same thing today but instead ..the power steering light came on and it got difficult to steer so i pulled over and turned the car off but needed a jump to get it started again but soon after the lights came back on… what do you think?

There are many things that could require you needing a jump every time you start your car or you thinking that it's the alternator number one get a multimeter attach it to your battery with the car off you should have over 12.6 volts now with the multimeter on the battery start the vehicle and turn on everything including the air conditioner the rear defrost is your stereo the high beams and the fan on high at this point you should be around 13 volts if not then it may be an issue with your alternator there may be an issue with the ground wire coming off the battery then maybe an issue with your positively coming off the battery there may be a loose connection on your alternator there may be an issue with your tensioner or serpentine belt but first check your battery with the multimeter as I suggested. And then after the battery test with the multimeter has failed start checking to see if your connections are clean and tight at the battery then at the alternator and then at the ground wire leading from the battery to the engine block then check your serpentine belt and look at it as the car is running and look at the tensioner if the tensioner is bouncing then you need a new tensioner pulley and tension and continue on from there. This video was somewhat disturbing and completely inadequate as most RUclips videos for do it yourselfers

My alternator died today while I was on the highway so I’ll add a few more things:
Sometimes there is no warning and your alternator abruptly fails. When this happens, electrical systems can start going on the fritz.
It might start off with your battery light randomly turning on and off or flashing, and your doors won’t lock when you shift out of park (if you have this setting enabled). Your battery light might turn off when the engine is over a certain RPM. If this is happening, your alternator is actively failing.
Then, all your dash lights will start flickering on and off, your speedometer and tachometer stop working. Your engine won’t rev over 2-3k rpm. Your transmission (if automatic) starts shifting very abruptly and going in and out of gear. Once this happens, your alternator has already failed and your battery has drained.
It might not be likely, but it is possible for an alternator to fail without any warning at all. It just works until it doesn’t.
I’d strongly recommend keeping a portable jump starter in your car, they aren’t meant to provide continuous power and they will drain very fast if they’re used like that, but that was also the only reason I was able to make it to an auto parts store today. Sometimes a couple miles worth of power will make the difference between a simple $200 part swap and thousands of dollars for towing, transport to and from a parts store, etc. Stay safe out there and keep up on your vehicle’s maintenance!

@@DJBpartyTV Id get to an auto parts store/mechanic as soon as you can, assuming your car will start. But be warned, once the alternator fails completely, the battery will lose its charge pretty quickly. Once the battery dies, your engine won’t run, power steering and ABS won’t work, etc. It’s basically like if you took the keys out while driving

My car starts fine , it hasn’t stalled at all. The only issue is I got 4 dashboard lights on. Not all are on nor is it flashing. A battery light isn’t on either.

You are absolutely right. My car has been showing signs of all the symptoms until today. Today was the first time I seen a red battery symbol on the dashboard and right after that is stalling gave out and wouldn't crank again. I had electrical issues. Come to find out it's the alternator. That red battery symbol was the only new thing that happened to my car before it stalled and the mechanic said that's what is wrong with the car, my alternator

@@1957346 man it happened to me this weekend. Car ran just fine until I couldn't crank it. Got it jumped twice. first time it ran for a few minutes. second time it died in less than a minute.

You gave the most important information....my van stalled while it was in idle. As soon as it stalled, the battery light came on and I could not start it. It was trying to crank, but there was not enough juice in the battery to start it up. I knew it was the alternator....now I have to get it replaced.

Thank you . This video explained a lot . I had my Car in the shop for another issue about 3 weeks ago. They had to do diagnostics to find the problem . My question would be : If I had diagnostics done 3 weeks ago, and I also had an alternator or battery going bad on me , wouldn't it have shown up 3 weeks ago ? Wouldn't it show all things wrong with the Car or only specific things that were specifically being looked for ? Now, I have a Car that won't start. Not sure if its the battery or alternator.

The alternator powers everything while the engine is running along with recharging the battery.
My alternator pulley bearing went bad causing high resistance and premature wear on my drive belt. Replaced the bearing and all is good. DO NOT USE A CHEAP BEARING LIKE CHINESE BEARING. PLEASE USE A HIGH QUALITY BEARING.

I have a similar problem with the dimming headlight, but it goes dimmer then comes back after couple minutes while driving and it repeats same issue.. do you think that would be the alternator as I’ve checked everything else fuses, ground etc

Dude you have no idea what your talking about. The car uses the battery to just start. The alternator keep the current going. You should be able to unplug a battery after turning on the car. Cause like I said the alternator keeps it going.

I had my alternator replaced but now my fans for cooling my engine only works if my ac and heater are on at the same time. Why is that? Did the macanic put it on wrong? Because I didn't have a problem with my fans before.
Okay so, my car has the following symptoms:
Dimming lights when accelerating and decelerating, dimming lights when rotating steering wheel when stationary, when stopping at a light, revs go to normal idle, then they drop a bit below and come back to normal idle.
I had the battery replaced and just when the battery was replaced, all these symptoms were cured, however the next time I drove my car, all these symptoms are back. Does this mean a bad alternator?

This is something I experienced, seeing others go through and hurt my mechanic say today. It is an anomaly where you can buy a new alternator and depending on where you bought it from it can go bad in a couple days to a week after you bought it because of where you bought it from. So you can end up spending more money thinking it's something else because you fix the alternator but it's actually still the alternator. My mechanic says AutoZone was a bad place to buy an alternator because several customers came back because they bought an alternator and the problem still persist until they went somewhere else to buy the alternator and the car ran good

I had an issue with my car it's it starts but it won't crank I guess and it started to shut off on me. Yes it is shut off on me while I was driving so I let it sit I'm running the engine right now it seems to be fine but. I did go to AutoZone they checked the battery the battery is good they even check the starter the starter is good so it has to be the alternator. Does leaving it to sit for a couple of days helps to issue I mean I know I have to get it fixed but does it buy me some time? One of my lights did go out it did dim and then it eventually went out and it is my left headlight on the driver side. Besides that there's no other electrical issues. So I have two out of five.

I have a 05 Saturn ion and I’m 99% sure my alternator is dead, I charged the battery fully the first time it died, and a day later it died again, jumped it got it running drove for 5 min and all the electrical things died, lights dimmed, power steering died, power breaks died, radio and gauges shut off, it said I was doing 40 sitting still, battery light came on and when it was about to die the abs light came on, is there anything other than a dead alternator that could cause this?
