the fact that heathers now has a swing and Hannah still had to come back as TWO different heathers, Eleanor had to emergency cover Mac, and they had 3 heather covers all on at the same time is so funny
Its crazy to me that theyve added a swing in and yet theyre still having all these issues with having covers on and having past cast member come back etc. I mean i know illness cant be helped so its not really the casts fault that this happens but like, im sure yesterday they had to do a concert performance of the show and they took certain bits out because they just didnt have enough people there
@@aimeequick3567 the circumstances with last weekend’s performance were unique as a decent portion of the cast were off due to an illness that was clearly spread around the production
@@aimeequick3567 It’s not as if they can hire anymore swings anyway. There was barely enough room to fit Billie resulting in the boys and girls swapping changing rooms. It sucks but this rarely happens tbh
For the people who have the Roku channel, the Heathers musical pro shot ft. Ailsa Davidson as Veronica is freely available barely ad-supported in my region of the U.S. I know this is probably not applicable to other countries/regions, but it was a pleasant surprise.
I saw this last week and I agree with a lot of it. Erin was a very unique Veronica and a complete standout, and Nathanael definitely read as "older" for me as well, but he was still a great performer and I loved his take on JD. Lydia was an absolutely excellent Martha, and she was definitely the best heartbreaking performance of her that I've seen - she played up Martha being so innocent in a really good and believable way. I think it's how Kindergarten Boyfriend is best performed - the humour comes early but the tragic story is still told sincerely as it shifts. As for the Heathers, I had all understudies (Georgia Gagen as Chandler, Eleanor Morrison-Halliday as Duke, Billie Bowman as McNamara) so I can't comment on the ones in the main cast. Georgia was really strong once Chandler died as weird as that sounds, but I didn't gel with her until after her death. I think she nailed your complaint about her - became less robotic after the death. Eleanor was phenomenal as Duke though, at least for me. She's always been a standout as an ensemble member, and I was very happy to have gotten the chance to see her as Duke, especially as she gradually rises to being the new Chandler. I wasn't too sure on Billie unfortunately, just didn't gel with her (presumably due to her lack of rehearsal time to cover all three roles - feels like she missed parts of the choreo and just small thing) - but the potential is definitely there and she has potentially my favourite Lifeboat rendition I've heard. Kurt/Ram work well, they weren't particularly unique for Kurt/Ram portrayals, but that is not a bad thing in the slightest - they completely nail their roles. For the adults, Mrs Fleming was really strong for me, I do agree she reads as young but I enjoyed it! Kurt/Rams dads I didn't buy though, I'm not sure if they need more time to grow into the roles but they just lacked the chemistry to nail the roles and they were the two that read as young in a less immersive way - because Mrs Fleming could have just been played as a younger teacher, but obviously to be the parents you'd have to be older. Overall, I definitely want to go back a bit later in their run - there were some already top tier performances that I think will only improve with more time.
I interpret the comedy lyrics of the song Kindergarten Boyfriend as being the bridge between Martha's youthful nature and her age/environment/peers. I think the lyrics are 'funny' because they seem childish, but if you think about how she's singing about when she was in kindergarten and her dreams then it's quite sincere and sweet- of course it sounds childish because she's singing about her as a child and her private personal thoughts. But then the song is sad because now she is aware that all her peers are growing up and shedding their childishness and as a result they are leaving her behind, which culminates in her jumping off the bridge at the end
I'm just a U.S theatre kid who isn't aware of half of the U.K actors mentioned but i always flock to your vids because i NEED to hear your opinions. No other theatre critic i trust more, even though ive never seen these shows in the U.K lol could listen to you for hours
Having seen the movie a million time, the show live, and memorizing the Broadway cast album...I had high hopes for the Proshot. I really didn't have any issues with the cast, my problems were the changes to the script and songs. I thought it took a lot of the "fun" and "cheekiness" out of it.
When Heathers had debuted off broadway, we were originally intending to see it, and they changed our minds and saw Rocky The Musical and then Lady Day at Emersons Bar and Grill instead. Lady Day w/ Audra was one of the most incredible shows I have seen in theatre and Rocky, which I was expecting to be a trainwreck, was quite good and glad I got to be one of those few who saw that musical, since I doubt it is going to be done again anytime soon. As I heard bits and pieces over the years of Heathers, I kinda lost interest. After being disappointed by Mean Girls, I had very little interest in checking out the multiple productions and tributes to that show.. I watched the first half on Roku and got bored. I felt like i was just getting a boring retread of the movie with a few songs and catering to people who seem to like the superfans that lost thier mind over how much was changed for the TV series and complaining about how much they hated that is wasnt just a long version of the movie,. (in America the show only aired one episode, so the majority of complainers didnt even see the series but they hated it still. I found the Roku production to be not the most appealing cast to look at, although it came off as a fairly capable company of people. I am just happy that more shows are getting approved to be professionally show (mainly from overseas because the Actors Equity rules for filming in the US, make it far more complicated to pull off. I love it because those shows I only see by video, and it tends to be harder to find good bootlegs from Europe. (Not that the majority of the US ones are great but at least they exist) I still find the TV series to have been the most enjoyable revisit to this story. It took the deliciously dark tone from the movie, and dialed it up to 10 as it mocked the current trends in the hypocrisy in todays culture. I find it facinating the way the youth seems to love the original for very different reasons. Almost like they wish that was their high school experience. So Strange. Wish they would have pro shotted (or anything shot really) of American Psycho when it opened in London. I would have preferred heathers to have a feel more in line like that musical.
Fantastic review as always Mickey, loved it! But I couldn’t get out of my mind how people who have never seen the show before reacted to you opening with that quote… 🤣🤣
Loved the show and this cast. Erin Caldwell was a standout to me. Her comedic timing mixed with her effortless vocals made me root for her character the entire show. Nathaneals JD was fantastic although I will agree on the age comment. Madison was charming and feisty as Chandler with just the right amount of bitchiness for me - every scene that she was in was always exciting and I enjoyed her presence on stage. Jasmine as McNamara was also a standout performance of the night and possibly one of my favourite renditions of lifeboat I’ve ever seen. I thought her breakdown was so moving and had me almost in tears really feeling sorry for her character in the end. Vivian was great but I didn’t like her Duke very much. To me she didn’t sell herself like a Heather. I thought this most at the start of the show in Candy Store - her energy did not match what Firth and Beel were doing at all on stage and never shut up vocally was amazing - but just didn’t match her physical choices. In moments I found her choices humorous but a lot of the time it looked like she was (and I try to say this without hate) bored on stage. I loved Lydia as Martha, she had the right amount of vulnerability mixed with the quirky and cute personality of the character. Her Kindergarten Boyfriend for me was so clean and emotionally there. Such a strong voice.
I absolutely agree with your opinions tbh. I love the whole of the new cast. I didn’t get to see Nathanial or Jasmin perform but Elliot (understudy JD) was possibly my favourite JD and reminded me a lot of Jordan’s JD. I saw Eleanor’s full production Mac debut and she was incredible, especially considering she had very limited time to rehears the role and she played it very well. Gutted I didn’t get to see Lydia’s kindergarten bf as I love that song and I adore Lizzie Bea after seeing her perform it and I appreciate the song a lot more but I saw the October 2nd matinee and they had to cut the song as Lydia still couldn’t sing and they wanted Bayley (understudy Martha) to go on as ensemble else they would have been left with 1 female ensemble member
This makes me sad. Was meant to see Heather's for the first time at the weekend but got a refund when it was changed to a sit down concert 1 hour before the performance 😢
A sit down concert? so they just performed numbers from the show and did like a reading? well at least they let you sit down to watch them would be so annoying to find more shows trying off shows like Here Lies Love which everyone stands the entire time. While I like that whole "stuff happening all around you" type of experince. I still dont want to stand for over 90min.

I saw it today and really liked the new cast. Eleanor Morrison-Halliday was on for Heather Mac despite the fact that she doesn’t even cover that role. She was brilliant and really suited the character.
I bloody love Heathers to the point that I made sure I was playing Heather Chandler in my musical theatre society's show (I was the president lol) and I went to see it over the summer for the second time and I felt exactly the same about Maddi! Vocally she was brilliant, but there was no nuance to her character at all (even though the character is just pure bitch) and I felt like all the lines were so placed and it felt a bit weird?
Have you seen the proshot? Maddison’s performance in that doesn’t really match your description in that. She does have some weird line readings (which I think partly is because of the accent) but I really love some of her choices like the kooky laugh in Veronica’s dream. I’ll admit on my first viewing I wasn’t totally sold until she died (wanted her to be a bit more of a mythic bitch) and then I started enjoying her take on Chandler a bit more during Me Inside of Me
I feel like she dialed down the way she would perform some of her lines. Especiallt as she doesn’t have the extremely high riff anymore. However she still is my favourite chandler.
