I think Betrayal at Calth is selling just fine - my local store(non-GW) got in something like 80 boxes, and sold about 60 of those through pre-orders. Even with the board game rules added in, you're still getting a fantastic value, and GW seems to be admitting with a wink and a nudge that the set is basically intended to help a lot of people start their 30K armies. I suspect that the models will eventually be released in individual sets for sale, as well.
I picked up a pair of boxes and am considering a third. That said, the game included is actually really good and Im excited at the rumors of expansions for it being released this year.
I have so many gamer friends who love the 40k setting but cant justify the price of getting into the game so boxes like Betrayal at Calth, Deathwatch Overkill and Space Hulk are a way for us to game in the 40k universe with the amazing models without playing 40k proper.
the models itself is already an amazing value. Here in Canada, the box costs $180. Buying just the models separately is almost $400. so I am saving a fortune with this box. Slowly coming back to the hobby, well done GW. But I still can't forgive them for the prices of deathwatch models.
their deathwatch models were surprisingly well priced, the corvus couldve been cheaper but the veterans box is basically sternguard for cheaper, the watch master is an amazing price, death masque is a phenomenal value as well
Your argument about "ditch the game, just the models, only cheaper" is a bit odd imo. The box is already a bargain compared to even the equivalent 40k models, and the separate HH models are even more expensive. So imo the game is a nice bonus.
I just feel GW sometimes try and find an excuse to bundle models into a box. Be it a new game system such as renegade or storm cloud attack or create new formation data sheets for the box such as the start collecting sets. Not that this is a bad thing as it passes on the saving of buying models separately to the customer but if they can take a hit on the prices why not lower them. It boils down to GW shifting old stock, repackaging it and making up new rules with the exception of the newer boxed games of course. They will then release models separately at a higher price to reinforce the illusion that you're getting more value when in fact the value is engineered. These aren't all bad things I just think people should take the time to understand the prices and the reasons why. Then they'll be better equipped to make a purchasing decision. Instead of just looking at the models separately and the price of the boxed set. I'd also bet my Warlord that the majority of people, including yourself, buy these sets to get the discounted models and not for the new game system. If those prices are still too high they will go to ebay and buy the ones from the set they want.
There are many reasons why a separate box cost more than a bundle though. (Separate packaging means it takes more room in shipping and more room on the self) As for the discounted models VS the game. Depends. I honestly bought Execution Force for the Game. I bought Silver Tower for the game, friend might have bought Overkill for the models, but we have enjoyed the game a lot. I haven't bought Calth yet, but yes I would mainly buy that for the models. Prospero I split with a friend for the models, but we plan on playing the game too. There is another reason for why the Horus Heresy stuff is sold as games and not as separate enteties, that must also be considered: Games Workshop doesn't ACTUALLY support the Age of Darkness game line, so it would be somewhat "weird" to just start selling models without it being part of something. Once they added the rules for the Calth models to Angels of Death they also made them available to be sold seperatly, as it's now part of 40k.
+thomas dawes In reality it's actually more than that as that bundle does not include any heavy or special weapons. It's more like Forgeworld's HH series would be x30 marines + bolters, heavy weapons and a power weapon set: £227 (not including any special weapons). £95 is a great deal but it depends if you 1. prefer the detail of resin and 2. how much more you prefer Mark III over Mark IV. I will probably still buy a load of resin space marines.
On the GW web store a space marine tactical squad is £25, both a terminator squad and a dreadnought cost £28, and a plastic character is about £18. So in this boxed set you are getting about £167 worth of models for £95. I bought two ... kinda wanna buy two more. And it works great with existing boxed sets. I have loads of extra parts from the tactical squad set, and the chaos space marine set, and the khorne berzerker set, all who can be used to convert your minatures. I am making Sons of Horus, and they look great with some different marks of armour thrown in the mix, a Mk V here, a Mk VI there, some different helmets, some top-knots, some different weapons, etc.
+Grubnar While I am sure many would let you use HH models as 40K models some may not. Your comparison is good but in fact it is so much better when viewed in a 30K range comparison. The total cost of all of these models from Forgeworld's HH series would be x30 marines + bolters, heavy weapons and a power weapon set: £227 (not including any special weapons), Terminator squad: £52, Contemptor Dreadnought: £61.50 and let's say 2 Praetors to fill in for the HQ: £33. Total cost would be £373.50 and you would still have a couple of missing parts. With a discount of 20% for the HH set: £76 you are actually making a saving of £297.50!!! And you would have loads of spare parts for your other marines. Hope that helps. And yes everyone should buy two box sets. Not because they like the models or they think it is good value but to send a message to GW.
I'm new. At 7:44 could he use the sword in close range and shoot in the same turn even though he's holding the plasma gun with both hands? And another thing....why the hell is there no deamon primarch models. I repeat im new, but that just makes sense to me.
When will GW begin dropping a full line of Primarchs to head these 30k legions? And I'm not talking the few Primarchs released by Forge World. It ain't 30k if you don't have Sanguinious leading your 30k Blood Angels army.
+Sup3rSaiy3n if GW eventually does give us plastic Primarchs, I'd so be down to run a 30k Blood Angels list. I can only imagine he awesomeness of a Sanguinius led Blood Angels list. That said, In still assembling my first Betrayal at Calth box since Im not sure what I want to do with the models yet.
DOOMED ! Such a shame for me as I play blood ravens and don't have a known primarch, meaning everyone runs around with there Demi-god parents and we get to sit on a bench depressed because we were disowned... I cri everytim
I bought the box set just for fun and I don't have any army. So I want a self contained game. I also bought the Space Hulk 4.0 because I used to play the original a long time ago. I like the box set approach as it is a complete playable game with no hidden extras, apart from the paints.
thx for the vid I'm building 2 boxes atm and was curious that left over bits I might have...especially to add to my 40k blood angels army that is in need of some bits lol....wolves first though :)
Decisions, decisions... I just started building a 40k army a few months ago beginning with 3 primaris and the start collecting set. Problem is now I can't decide if I want to expand the chapters numbers (want the majority of them to use 30k weapons and armor since the theme is they are loyalists descended from a certain traitor legion) with this set or get an Imperial Knight. Lay the groundwork for 4 companies or get some heavy fire support for my 1 squad company? Also, are terminators exclusively for the first company or does it depend on the chapter/legion?
I really hope the rumors of expansions to this game are true. Im actually a big fan of the game and am interested in it for that aspect just as much as I was for all of the models to help me build a potential 30k list. I think GW has a winner with the Horus Heresy specialty game. Hopefully they do actually support it and give is more new legion models and tiles/scenarios for the game.
+DOOMED ! I've heard the set will be arriving towards the end of this year in a similar fashion to this set. With two space marine factions that can both be used in one space marine army. Heard it will have plastic MK3 armour (my favourite) and they may bring out a plastic sicaran. Take with a large pinch of salt though.
if I wanted could I paint all of the models in this boxset in the Ultramarines style or can i only paint some of the due to other chapters memorabilia?
Alex Leon there are completely unmarked, though YOU DARE PAINT THEM ULTRASMURFS? (Ignore my prejudice paint them however you want, they would be your models, no one can force you to do anything with them that you don't like)
Nah your good, the looks on these guys are standard for all 30k chapters but if you wanted their are forgeworld options for extra chapter specific flair
Thanks for the great perspectives of all the pieces. I have to respectfully disagree about not making it a board game though. With the resurging popularity of board games thanks to ones like Space Hulk, Blood Bowl, Imperial Assault (amazing first year sales I know it's one of the top five brands in the world but still....) Arkham Horror, Descent and others I think it's a brilliant way to get a project that gets lots of value models in the hands of not only people looking to build a value army but board game fans who get to see GW models in comparison to their other games. Anyway, this is a great way to get a project through their board of directors who likely refuse to lower a models price when it will still sell for that regardless of farsighted plans like this that could really put GW on a bigger map. More sales = The easier it is for GW to make it's goals and get the board off it's back. More players = We all share the cost burden of there being a 40k and those who have been keeping it around for the past decade get not only a price break but a look at one of their favored periods that is still playable in 40k. I'd like to see more of this. Is this what Age of Sigmar was for Fantasy?
+Sup3rSaiy3n Thank you, you had great points as well, these were just my thoughts following other research and your video. Will you be doing a playthrough of the game itself? Will you be doing a review of Deathwatch as well?
Oh, are those two guys at the front the ones they are now selling as a two pack? The Cataphractii Praetor and Consul? Interesting. That explains why the Consul is so stumpy. He's an old "mini-marine".
Games workshop *was* a Game company. They became publicly traded, got a vile CEO, instituted annual price hikes, forced mom & pop stores out of the market and killed all 3rd party retailers IRL and Online in several countries, destroyed their games until they only had 3 from somewhere in the teens. Kirby became the new CEO after Roundtree was shitcanned for turning a Game company into an utterly despised Model company. Kirby revived the Warhammer Fantasy range, brought back specialist games with Bloodbowl, Space Hulk, Necromunda, Battlefleet Gothic, Betrayal at Calth, Burning of Prospero, Epic Armageddon and Mordheim either in development or released. Creating large box sets of useful and customizable models in order to renew their stale and hated corporate image and return to their roots. That's why BaC and BoP are games and not just *~!Start Collecting!~* boxes. This is who GW was, and is again. People newer to the hobby or who got into it very young might not know that.
It's great value for GW standards, but I'm not sure if it's good value when compared to other model making companies. Maybe if You buy it with 20-30% discount from retailer... it's good to judge things both within context of GW and on it's own right. I agree about "drop the game for lower" tho. It would make a lot of sense to have game if marines were snap-fit and in colored plastics (like Space Hulk.). It was certainly more fit to be it's own game than BaC for that reason, even if a lot worse value... I'm probably gonna pick at least one box at some point (two would be imho optimum. I may then recast Termies bodies (to use with bits, there's enough to make a double the terminators if You want both regular and LC ones,), some special/heavy weapons (oh hello missile devs!) and especially Contemptor (since it's just lump of plastic with arms, I could sacrifice one to make proper one with leg articulation)). Bonus idea - people seem to cannibalize Space Hulk sets for minis and sell gaming bits for cheap, and those termies looks actually pretty cool... You can pay a bit more and have TWO board games if You have some Genestealers... maybe even make some house rules for Contemptor and some big tyranid to have fight scene like with Ripley in power lifter in Aliens
Yeah you could, they're pretty similar to the current chaos spacemarines and it would make sense lore wise as the traitor legions do use older models of power armor.I'm thinking about using the marines and terminators for an alpha legion killteam myself
i honestly like the rules and what not. Only thing I wish was that you could do 4 player games. Sometimes you dont want to play a game of 40k and doing a smaller board game with some friends, and maybe with some friends who dont play 40k is then an option that wouldnt have been otherwise available to you.
Maverick5588 well if you know someone else with this box, smack both boards and models together and tweak the rules slightly to accommodate the extra players, bam 4 player game (i think, haven't actually seen to much of this games rules so this may not be possible but still)
Hi Sup3rSaiy3n, great vid, watched it before I got my own set. Did you get 6 40mm plain bases for Aethon and the 5 terminators? Since my set came with 5 bases. Thanks!
I think you're really missing the point. 40K is really impenetrable for a lot of people. I personally love the the 40k universe, but I've never been able to get into the game. Betrayal at Calth looks like a great way for me to "test the waters".
I'm at a crossroads right now, with the new Burning of Prospero set being released. It's either I get Betrayal at Calth, which lands me with a whole army, or I the Burning of Prospero set, which lands me with no vehicles, models I don't like (the sisters of silence, and the custodes), leader units that are specific to armies that have no relation to what I'm trying to do (it's time travely) but I get the MK 3 armor for the space marines for cheap. Any suggestions?
Firstly, where have you been? It's almost one year since the Betrayal at Calth set dropped - Just kidding with you :P You raise some powerful points. To put it bluntly if I was in your position I'd go for the BaC set and that's even with MK.III being my favourite armour. You'll be able to use all of the models in that set whereas Prospero you'll be paying £100 for 30 marines. When (not if) they release the models in Prospero separately it will still only cost you £90 for three sets of MK.III. When my Prospero set arrives I will compare it to the BaC set. Hope that helps.
Depends on which you like the look of the most. I like the colours of World eaters and word bearers but world eaters might take more time. All their primarchs are excellent but I like Perturabo and Angron the most.
I got both boxes, its a complete army, got some special weapons extra for heavy weapon support teams, and boarding shiels to make a special squad, some extra shoulders for a veteran squad...ahh and convertet ahriman to a librarian...and burned that stinking wolve in the flames :D
@@Sup3rSaiy3n 30k seems really interesting but I can't afford paying $100 for 5 models so that's good to know. Do you happen to know if, when you purchase a forge world 30k model, does it include a data sheet, or would I have to buy the army book right away? Thank You!
Those missile launchers and flamers take me back a bit - they're very similar to the ones you got in the original plastic SM tactical box. I must say I find it a bit odd that people say they look too "old school ". I mean, they're SUPPOSED to look old school. We are talking about 10,000 yrs before 40K after all. it's a bit like playing a war game with the ancient Greeks vs the Persians and moaning that neither side has tanks, lol. Is that right that they are bringing back Epic ? If so, I hope it's the Epic Space Marine game, and not the truly awful Epic 40K. I hate to think how much changing from Epic SM to Epic 40K cost them. It was a very unpopular move. So much so, that I never knew anyone who played Epic 40K. If they do bring that one back, please don't waste your money on it, it really was an awful game.
+zednotzee7 I guess some people will always find something to complain about. "I won't collect 30K because FW prices are too high for their highly detailed resin models"...GW bring out detailed 30K miniatures, in plastic....'Hey they don't look right". Not sure which version of Epic although I reckon if they do bring back those specialist games their rules may change to accommodate a wider range of models.
I'm thinking of getting this set to start some 30k but I don't know if I should make them all one legion or have them as 2 legions so I can play the game they're boxed in
That's what I plan on doing with Prospero. I already have 40k Space wolves, and I have 40k thousand Sons, so all I really need is the appropriate special weapons :)
@@Sup3rSaiy3n Hell yeah I am very eager for the rest of it to be revealed. Even after years of this video's release its still pretty enjoyable to watch so I thank you a lot for the great unboxings.
+Sup3rSaiy3n Are you going to do a painting tutorial? Please let me know! I just want to check with the local shop and see if they will let us play these. Then, as you said, I will try to get two. Do you ever do any rules videos or reviews? By the way I subscribed so if you put something in your intro vid about the Painting Tutorial I'll find it eventually.
@@Sup3rSaiy3n Just was wondering because of those rumours (conspiracy theories?), that GW plans to make all models bigger in the future and phase out the current regular Space Marine size...
Yùe Gèn just rumours. Primaris are completely different to normal sized marines. Furthermore the continue to make normal sized marines such as for the Horus Heresy.
It is a superb set of miniatures but agree that the miniatures should be available separate to the game and I would buy a lot more of the marines and they are great to kitbash with 40K miniatures
They are sold seperatly, but if you buy more than 2 squads extra, no matter which unit you choose to buy, then you go always cheaper with another whole board game and all the minis in it
His comment is 7 months old. They weren't sold separately at that time. If you're only after 30 Mk.IV marines then it is cheaper to buy them separately.
I still think they are a great set and got two full sets in the end. Last week got the Prospero box set and it is another superb edition to create HH without having to go down the Forge World route
***** Sorry i did forget the 'now' after the word 'seperatly'. The calth box is sold here for 90euros cheapest price, 10 tac for 32euros cheapest. Thats my point of reference, my be its differs from the country your in.
Playing chaos and is taking this Numbers from nothing. 3 times 200 points, it seems atleast like you can upgrade them to 200 points per squad. 200 points for terminators I think. The dreadnought and 2 hqs for about 100 points each. 1100 points? Plus minus upgrades.
+Jericho Ilagan People say that chaos is a weaker army, annd it kind of is. But if you are just going for the models. It is easier to paint the dark angels as a renegade army than it is to make the chaos look imperial. So if youre just going to buy dark vengeance and Betrayal at Calth I would recommend doing a chaos army.
+Jericho Ilagan Probably about 1,200 points. 600 for the marines, 200 for the terminators, 200 for the contemptor, 200 for the characters. A decent force.

Hauge sen yep
Hauge sen Em isnt it The other way around? It was Tom Kirby who was first and was BAD and now Rountree is fixing it
Wt
Bernie Valter Hey, people will believe what they want to believe
Hey uhh you got Roundtree and Kirby mixed up. Kirby is the fuck that burned GW to the ground
Can't you give one of the tactical squad leaders the combi bolter?
Nearly 4 years later...still no Plastic Sicarian
are there enough terminator helmets to give the captain one to?
I am from 2018
Now all these modules are available for 40k
Can you run these as a CSM army? What would HQ's be? Captain in terminator armor I guess, and what else? My FLGS still has one box.
Yeah you could, they're pretty similar to the current chaos spacemarines and it would make sense lore wise as the traitor legions do use older models of power armor.I'm thinking about using the marines and terminators for an alpha legion killteam myself
As someone with literally no interest in playing, best bang for your buck in terms of models.
Will buy this.
i honestly like the rules and what not.
Thanks!
+7325naruto Yes I did. Your's should have come with six 40mm bases.
+Sup3rSaiy3n thanks for confirming mate!
They look great, a lovely addition to your force!
+cruorangelussilicis Thanks, waiting for the weather to clear to spray them.
+Sup3rSaiy3n So you paint like, 4 days a year? ^ ^
+mikejonesnoreally :)
is it worth just buying this and some upgrade kits from forgeworld, or just getting the task force from forgeworld?
I'd say it's cheaper to buy a set at discount and buy the upgrade sets separately. My Legion has no loyalty as such, so I haven't purchased any sets.
I think you're really missing the point. 40K is really impenetrable for a lot of people. I personally love the the 40k universe, but I've never been able to get into the game. Betrayal at Calth looks like a great way for me to "test the waters".
I'd say killteam is as it's more similiar to normal 40k while I've heard 30k is alot different, but hey 30k is still rad
It's almost one year since the Betrayal at Calth set dropped - Just kidding with you :P
You raise some powerful points.
Hope that helps.
thanks
I also can't decide whether or not to do world eaters, Word bearers, Iron warriors, or death guard
Getting this asap
seems like a pretty good price for all those minis. I do not really play the game so thats a lot of paint8ng.
:( did they ever release any 30k models in plastic?
Yes these and the other set.
Not sure which version of Epic although I reckon if they do bring back those specialist games their rules may change to accommodate a wider range of models.
u think ill buy this and then buy asterion moloc to create a minotaurs army
i ment to say i think
"They'll be releasing a plastic Sicarian next year" finally got it I guess haha
Yep
I'm thinking of getting this set to start some 30k but I don't know if I should make them all one legion or have them as 2 legions so I can play the game they're boxed in
Tough decision. If you have other space marines around you could use them or ask your mate to bring his.
Sup3rSaiy3n good point, wouldn't kill the game use have a 40k blood Angels army as the other group of marines. Thanks Sup3r
That's what I plan on doing with Prospero. I already have 40k Space wolves, and I have 40k thousand Sons, so all I really need is the appropriate special weapons :)
@@TheEternalCrafter I'm going for alpha legion myself
If I were to make my own chapter would I be able to mix these my 40k sm and use the 30k sm as norm 40k sm?
That's what I do.
Sup3rSaiy3n I’m going to add these to my GoT stark inspired sm army
Alot of chapters still use and even produce these models of power because of how effective they are even in the 42nd millennium
@@supremetarantulasorcerer165 3 years, patiently waiting for an answer 😂. Appreciate it tho
6 years later and we're finally getting a plastic Sicarian lmao
not sure how that is a lmao but meh. Great that we are getting plastic heresy
@@Sup3rSaiy3n Hell yeah I am very eager for the rest of it to be revealed. Even after years of this video's release its still pretty enjoyable to watch so I thank you a lot for the great unboxings.
Do A Painting Tutorial!!
+MMA BELTO Great suggestion! I will put one up soon.
Hey no probz dude, your a great youtuber so you need great vids! :)
+MMA BELTO Wow thanks mate, you just made my weekend :)
Lol! Yeah I love your vids, I'm a long time sub and always love your Warhammer stuff especially! :) ;)
The board game is pretty good too.
Are those the same size as the primaries space marines?
Yùe Gèn no they are space marines not primaris space marines. Primaris were created for the 41st millennium. Hope that helps.
@@Sup3rSaiy3n Just was wondering because of those rumours (conspiracy theories?), that GW plans to make all models bigger in the future and phase out the current regular Space Marine size...
Yùe Gèn just rumours. Primaris are completely different to normal sized marines. Furthermore the continue to make normal sized marines such as for the Horus Heresy.
ádd a devastator and assault squad, you got yourself a demi company
how many missle launchers?
3
Great vid
Such value many wow
Went it my local hobby spot just today, and my buddy who runs the store tells me that this box is gone. Is this true, Or is he just mistaken?
Jonathan Cadbury yes it is gone. It was around for two years I think
Sup3rSaiy3n does seem a shame to get rid of it, it was a great bargain.
Jonathan Cadbury Yeh for sure. I think they had it up on last chance to buy a couple of weeks ago and I was shocked to see it being discontinued.
Nice review. Sub'd.
+SilverSkullGamer Cheers. Hope you enjoy the 30K/40K content.
+Sup3rSaiy3n Now I'm confused. Is 30k the board game or a entirely new tabletop war game just like 40K or Fantasy?
*****
Sorry i did forget the 'now' after the word 'seperatly'. The calth box is sold here for 90euros cheapest price, 10 tac for 32euros cheapest. Thats my point of reference, my be its differs from the country your in.
They certainly are. I got two sets too and I'll probably pick up a second Prospero at some point. So much cheaper than the FW route.
this is how many points' worth in 40k?
Playing chaos and is taking this Numbers from nothing.
3 times 200 points, it seems atleast like you can upgrade them to 200 points per squad.
200 points for terminators I think.
The dreadnought and 2 hqs for about 100 points each.
1100 points?
Plus minus upgrades.
+william timonen cool. thank you. I want to make them either as chaos army or as dark angels army since I have the Dark Vengeance set.
Did it get anywhere?
+Jericho Ilagan Probably about 1,200 points. 600 for the marines, 200 for the terminators, 200 for the contemptor, 200 for the characters. A decent force.
It's time to #bringbackcalth
the dreadnought looks terrible, marines and terminators look awesome though.
Curtainfall agreed
Yeah the contemptor dread requires a special liking...atleast the plastic one because the forgeworld ones are SICK
