I'm a photo grower and I grew an auto for shits and giggles. I planted one in an Earthbox (15-gallon SIP) in living soil ( BuildASoil Way) and it got four foot tall before it started flowering. 14 ounces of really good herb in a 3x3 under a 300-watt Maxsisun.
Awesome auto specific suggestions in this one! I asked a well known crop steering company how to steer auto's and their response in a live podcast was, "Why auto's?". I'd accidentally stumped the best and brightest by asking a question about auto's. Auto crop steering is an emerging practice with little industry support but fortunately prodigies like Dave Baker are raising the bar . It was nice to see ACI include auto's in their recent AI controller release. Hopefully someday 'auto crop steering' and 'photo crop steering' will get equal support, until then these discussions are the best preview of tomorrow.
Fantastic information for a first time grower. Hopefully popping beans before Christmas. Waiting on my Ac Infinity equipment to arrive. Starting with Fast buds 420 autos. Chris your show is one of my favorites. 60 years old and a disabled Marine vet from MN. Thanks
I grew 4 different Autos from 420 fast buds. Blueberry Auto, Amnesia Zkittlez, Strawberry Gorilla, & Purple Lemonade, all fire cultivars. They all grew in an Earth Box with organic living soil
Excellent episode! I'm growing Mephisto autos in coco in fabric pots, still trying to get a perfect grow. Every plant seems to have issues sooner or later. Buds turn out great, but plants looks sick constantly. Been experimenting with GH trio, calmag, silica....grow dots on others...idk my tent temps are always between 65 and 75 max, humidity 50%. Maybe giving too much water at one time and causing roots to not get enough oxygen. Always let em dry out a couple days but once the problems start they never go away. Love the hobby! Mephisto has some amazing strains!
This was a great interview! I really learned a lot of what I’ve been doing wrong from this episode. I definitely need to feed my girls more, makes a lot of sense that autos would use more feed than your typical photo.
I'm just now going through some Speedrun genetics myself and am loving them so far. Currently a week in on Supreme Runtz in my Blumat drip. Just recently finished a couple Fatality and one Sour Black Cherry Haze
@@RobSWVA nice. Got two strawberry banana autos pretty much ready to harvest, one I think stunted, a Tropicana cookies from Growers Choice and an LSD-25 about 10 days old from fast buds
@SmoochXO_420Gaming that LSD is pretty heavy with phenotypes from my experience, But there's an all big nugs one in there that I've found before. Only ones from them I've truly liked are the gorilla crosses
Yeah it is a little odd, people are still so divided on topping autos. BasementGanja does topping on his autos and ends up with 100g+ yields every time. I think it's definitely dependent on the genetics and the grow space too.
Autos are tougher than photos. If you can pull of a auto grow like that ,, imagine what you can do with photos. West Kentucky ready to show up and show out... 💚🔥💪
I love growing auto because I can keep them small I have had at least one auto going in my tent growing for the last 3 years I start one 3 weeks before I harvest the one at bat but I always have one on deck
Just finishing my first ever grow. Grew some autos, went pretty decent, quite enjoy the challenge of hitting the run just right. Learnt so much, next run loading 😁
check Coco If you havent already. In soil i would go minimum 5 gallons, also many people give autos too much light and dont notice it, DLI can get pretty high. LST is Important with autoflowers. Light scedule 20/4 Worked best for me with most strains. Have fun growing Brother 🎉
@konstantintzagas9462 Thanks friend. Great advice. Im in coco perlite. I also did give too much light at one point trying to push them. Im just keen to get those first few weeks down. First run i did the classic mistake of watering seedling too often. But all in all i got some awesome bud and learnt a lot!
Actually had an issue with fungus gnats on my last grow and I used maybe an inch of play sand that I had left over from my kids sandbox on the top of my soil and they were gone within 24 hours. My soil is all organic I won't say what company I used that had the fungus nuts in it but I used about 40% of their dirt, 30% coco core, 20% biochore, and 10% Peet/sphagnum moss...
Good thinking -- if you want to reuse the medium without mixing with sand you can try using pea gravel and a soil sifter to separate them after harvest.
Pretty cool to here speedrun seeds as the original auto reg stock is from me I gave a bunch to a buddy in Colorado he and 2 others created businesses super pumped for them it's a crazy thing but I love it.
I feel in love with autos don’t tell p I pop one with my photos and leave them in the veg tent don’t change anything just let them do there thing 5 gal living soil
I agree with him about lighting 34:00 in. I give my plants about the same. The trick is to blast it with light early on so it hardens off. Sprouted seedlings go from 400ppfd to 600 to 800 pretty quickly. All the way to 1300 par. I do grow some autos but mostly photoperiods and it's the same thing. My issue with autos is I try to stress them so they flower early and I get a actual 60-70 day harvest but it never happens. They get way too big and start taking up too much space. They're unpredictable too. Edit: the more your able to harden off a plant in veg, in any capacity, the less likely it'll herm in flower. So that's another benefit
And ya, my plants outside I just cut down. Also live in MA. Was growing ghost peppers. Its been 70 all month up until the last week or so. Same warmth last month too. Honestly, the weather here is all sorts of messed up lol. More than its been in the past. For example, it's supposed to snow in a day or so LOL. The season needs to pick a lane.
Cronk line is a little light on the nitrogen I've noticed. Plants get a little yellow pretty early at the end of flower, so im guessing not enough in the veg cycle. I've had great yielding autos with it tho. Is Ben ever gonna do he full auto line P.s. you should have daz on for a breeding episode on autos
100% agree with the use of Far-Red.. I supplement my grow in Flower with an Electric Sky V3 @ Full power and can say that yields have 100% doubled since utilizing the Far-Red light spectrum.. Scrog game has to be on and a taller tent 100% necessary! 😆
i have an off brand light i add with my sf2000PRO, which has a small amount of IR red and UV2, i also noticed a stretch/more limbs whilst in veg. One thing i also noticed is that the plants will produce defensive trichomes during veg, these arnt "active" but ive noticed it allows me to notice the terpes before ive even hit flower! not sure if these terpes form in different ratios in flower other than veg with UV+IR stress then what they would without the IR + UV but maybe this can be used to identify certain phenos before even going in flower!... ALSO the stacking and length of the triches seem like 1.5/2x than without the IR + UV
I have two Banana Split autos drying now. They're from Ethos Genetics Tropical Thunder Multipack. Probably the fattest buds of any kind I've grown. And frosty. Also, a couple PPD autos from Humboldt. Big fat purple goodness there, too. I'm not all auto, Kong's Krush from Green House is vegging. It's all good.
Dave Baker? Sr, or Jr.? Flooring company Dave Baker? It's Chris from Springfield, Amherst, Chicopee. Area. It's been 10 yrs or so since I've seen you. Hope all is well if it is you bud. Otherwise great show
its crazy, ive done 4 auto runs now, but just cannot get them to take a heavy feed. anything over 1.2 ec and they punish me HARD. done mephisto, fastbuds, nightowl and a handfull of freebees from various breeders.. just never like high ec :-/
Hows your water quality? Even if its a low ppm, if the particles in water is sodium, it can cause issues. My tap is 50-100ppm, I can feed at 2.5ec with mild leaf tip burn with floraflex. I usually feed around 1.8 though, high frequency fertigation.
1300 ppfd at 24hrs is 110 dli I don’t understand what he’s talking about. He said he aims for 40 dli. And yeah the sun gets up to 2300 ppfd but there’s unlimited co2 outdoors and it’s not that high except at noon. Wish he went into more detail about that. Some good info though for sure to be learned.
@ keep in mind far red is 730 nanometer so it is in fact outside the spectrum. So when that is at 100% it by self is 140 watts. Add that to the 600 watts of the In spectrum lighting that will push it over 1000 ppfd. This allows me to push the plants hard. Dli is mostly from the white spectrum. The sun at2pm is 2300 ppfd by the way. Study done by dr Bruce bugby. I keep the distance far enough away that no bleaching or burning occurs. I don’t care about wasted dli because the benefits of adding the fat red in far out weighs the waste of white light when 100%.
Never thought I'd ever be growing so many Autos, but I am gonna be running mostly Autos all winter. Some old ILGM GDP Autos to start, then its Royal Seed/Tyson 2.0 GOAT'lato, Corkscrew, and also some Nothern Lights Autos and either Chocolate Haze or Orion F1 Autos. I recently set up a small indoor grow in a new place and instead of fighting the temp/humidity all summer, I'm just gonna Veg up Photo Mothers in the summers, then run and flower the Clones and Autos all winter while the humidity is a lot more controllable.
Thanks to Dave Baker for coming onto the podcast today!

This is the information I want.Thank you.
I am surprized he said not to top. I see MANY videos with excellent results.
Topping is definitely not smart as it inevitably removes bud mass from the final harvest result
Anything you do to slow down or stunt the growth of an auto causes you to have a smaller plants with less yield.

Good information very similar to my style I cant remember if he use C02 it can increase density of bud mine are like a rock wen dry
When he talked about adjusting the feed to the ppm/EC he wanted, do you just up the amount of base nutrients for that or up everything?

I just happened to be paying attention at 47:16, and I am quite sure this guest meant to say “auto” rather than “photo”.
I've had an organic grow going but I'm starting to understand you can't have 'big' autos if you're not pumping them full of nutes.

The plant will only take 40 dli but the high ppfd allows the buds to harden well also keeping the far red all the way up helps photosynthesis.
@ so with the far red all the way up you need to run high ppfd with full spectrum light to achieve 40dli?
@ keep in mind far red is 730 nanometer so it is in fact outside the spectrum. So when that is at 100% it by self is 140 watts. Two pounds in a 4x4 tent, this is not possible, I been growing for almost 30 years, it must be weighed wet
Even in a 3x3, you can get close to 2 pounds.
