Except one side is living in the middle age, while the other one just sucks. In any civilised country other than the US, the politics of conservatives would literally be seen as a 400 throwbacks. Against abortion, against LGBTQ rights, in favor of tax cuts for the rich, against tax cuts for the working class, deny climate change, deny covid, against healthcare, against weed legalization, supported a coup against their own government... In Germany, France or Sweden, liberals from the US are considered right wingers, and conservatives are literally considered far right extremists and fascists...
@@AiguilleVoodoo Your list is a little wrong, maybe you didn't hear enough conservative opinions, only a few extremists. I'm not a conservative, but if I think about the majority of what they believe.. All my answers below are about their general consensus imo
- against abortion? yes, they are mostly against
- against LGBT rights? no, they support it. Everyone already has the same rights legally, it depends what kind of ''rights'' you meant...
- tax cuts for the rich? not really, it's not particularly tax cuts focusing just them.. they support tax cuts in general.
- against tax cuts for the working class? wrong, they support tax cuts in general. They use their famous expression ''taxation is theft''
-deny climate change? Wrong, most accept it, they just don't want to be hysteric about it, as if it's an urgent matter or else it's the end of the world in a few years. They will say that climate naturally has changed over history, they're questionning the importance of the human part, not that we don't affect it at all or that the change doesn't exist.
-deny covid? false, most acccept it does exist, they just don't think it's that big of a deal for the healthy population and are against lockdowns, mandates, masks,etc.
- against healthcare? I think you meant free public healthcare? maybe, I think most want affordable private healthcare.
-against weed legalization? that may be true, I think most are against.
- supported a coup against their own government? wrong, most would condemn that violence

@@AiguilleVoodoo Modernity has nothing to do with age: people hundreds of years ago are probably more ethical, educated, and civilized than you. And what they defended still holds true today, you're just blowing things out of proportion there since half what you said is wrong. though considering lgbt and abortion, i agree, and in fact, i am personally inclined towards the conservative view. Remember, we have to go with the option that is simple.

I wish high school kids were told that. I'm excited to see my generation become teachers, I think their influence on the younger generations will result in a paradigm shift in higher education.
kids and students were forced to memorize things and if they would fail or come short, they would get beat up really bad by their teachers and nobody would help them. That was the life of someone living 40-90 years ago in communism . Today, u go to school and have fun

@@shreyasmahendra6809 exactly. It's about forming connections. A degree is just a piece of paper, and education is only the path to receive it. Intelligence shines elsewhere. So the most important thing, is the Who; the people you interact with, and in doing so will create an atmosphere for yourself that you may enjoy more so than going to college for the wrong reasons of feeling or looking smart because you have received a piece of a paper. In the long run, that piece of paper feels like nothing compared to the friends you make along the way, really. Connections can also take you farther, if your mind is concerned about that. Good grades are just the surface requirement for the real juice to drink up. Enjoy college, and enjoy life.
@@shreyasmahendra6809 You should still focus on learning, especially if you're studying for a STEM degree. You NEED that knowledge. But, if you have great relationships with professors and other staff, as well as get involved with organizations, you'll probably have greater access to job resources, recommendation letters, and internships, which will increase your likelihood of graduating with a job already lined up. You can literally meet your next employer at a college game or at a career networking event. If you're a straight-A student but never networked, you'll probably still have a good chance of getting a job, you'll just have to seek it out on your own once you graduate as opposed to being presented with opportunities through the network that you built. True story, my husband is an engineer and he got his job before he graduated because he met the VP of a company while drunkenly watching a football game. They got to talking, the VP ended up offering him an internship the summer before he graduated. He took the internship, which turned into a full-blown position upon graduation, which paid him over 80k just to start. All because he was drunk at a college football game. Of course, he had the grades and knowledge to back him up, but he was offered the job before ever being interviewed.
Huh, perhaps I hated college because I largely failed to network with peers.
I went to a local school that’s largely known for being a balance of affordability and quality. It was weird as fk being the entrepreneurship major surrounded by people that wanted to manage other peoples’ grocery stores or middle-manage a cubicle farm.
…And the “social media influencer” classmates that thought getting a business degree and shaking their ass online would make them rich.

Love the vibes I got from them; not presumptuous because of their enrollment at a top school but rather just doing their thing and are keenly open to discussion ("I'm just like you, let's converse"). There's no priority in being right or proving such, just open to new ideas and just dialogue in general.
the students that truly deserve to be there know they're on earth for something bigger than a name of where they went to school. they're here to learn, to inquire, to lead, all the stuff that gen mentions you need to succeed.

These days, most of the actual content you’d learn from a prestigious college like Harvard you could learn at 90% of the other colleges out there. The real value comes from the “who you know” aspect of meeting other people who had the chops to get accepted into the university.
Also, it's nice to have Harvard on your resume...
The guy that said merit and representation are a false dichotomy was right. Choosing to seek more representation/diversity does not mean that there will be less people worthy of merit.

@@victortorres3187 i don't see how that's even remotely close to being true, if you're seeking for diversity then by definition you're looking for a quantity variable, as in "you seek more of X person just because he is X type of person".
Representation for the sole reason of represention defies what merit is about, you should earn the position you're given based on qualities needed for that position.
If you're seeking for more representation then you should seek merit within what you're trying to represent, but this is still merely looking for merit.

Sounds like your college professors knew what they were doing - as a teacher, I aim for students to learn through a process of collaborative investigation which is exactly what you do when you engage in conversations with teachers and peers. Our job is to give space to facilitate and guide that. Lecturing is one of the least efficient ways to learn knowledge so you're not supposed to walk out from a lecture with a whole heap of more knowledge, but with some ideas that you can then go and engage with others - that's when the real learning begins.

The issue with merit vs. representation is what your baseline is for representation. We assume it means race and gender. But the increasing problem is a lack of diversity of thought.
Two people: Student A black, Student B white, who grew up in New Hampshire with liberal parents, attended the same school and came from the same income demographic will have much more in common with one another than another black student who grew up in Nicaragua with a poor family, and single mom.
Yet we're being taught that those two black students will somehow have more in common just based off of their race. Which is silly. Of course, there is some shared identity in race, particularly one with a universally historical struggle, but pitting it as a key identifier is flawed. And also doesn't truly create a diverse representation of thought, just of external characteristics.
why do we ''need'' to have representation? if they have the merit, they will represent...
by wanting to help people with positive discrimination, necessarily, it will be negative discrimination for other people.
Because negative discrimination has existed and does exist in our country already for many minorities, affirmative action helps close the gaps that already exists.
@@ClemintineCake you are putting everyone in the same group. innocent white people would be discriminated against... is this what you want, to fight discrimination with discrimination?

But is the goal to have universities boast margins, or is the goal to help rise up and empower those who have been historically oppressed? I don't think it's the best idea we could come up with. I think it's a bandaid to cover up a deeper, harder-to-fix issue. But nonetheless, one that needs to be repaired.
IMO: merit will always out shine representation. Just because 10 apples are bad doesn’t mean one can’t be good. The representation will always mostly be bad but to someone who can see past the superficial bias merit to me will win. I think perception will always affect which one is more important. Also affirmative action is misrepresentation

Regarding the merit/representation question I believe it is very important to address the fact of how is it that we measure success/merit and also who tends to have better opportunities to achieve such accomplishments; that’s where representation and diversity play a huge role. yea exactly all of the other videos are just prying into insecurities with the stats/how'd you get in type questions that really aren't beneficial to anyone and they take advantage of the harvard name to get tons of views. this vid actually made me think and i learned a lot from listening to him and the discussions

Subscribed. I really enjoyed this. My wife and I both have post-graduate degrees and my wife taught at the college level.... we frequently talk about the erosion of higher ed. I don't know enough to quantify the change but across multiple universities, my wife was told specifically not to grade on critical thinking, basic writing skills or the ability to formulate a simple logical argument..... instead told to grade based on a dumbed down syllabus created by the university. Even in higher level courses!
Anyway, I'd love to see a video highlighting this issue in higher ed outside of the Ivy League system (the bulk of higher ed).

Great questions, some great students you've picked. The girl with the grey/ black eyeshadow. I loved her answers the most. And I'd love to have conversations about the universe and humanity when drunk...I am really sick of people talking only about relationships when they're drunk. Like there's nothing else.

Personally always felt like if someone made it to an Ivy League university to study then I think what separates them from the “average” college student is their hard work, and their consistency. This was a great video to watch! 👏
These kids are clearly very well-rounded and mature thinkers but you’re absolutely right; it’s all effort. I know plenty of students that could make the upper universities-I myself and one-but the workload to get into an Oxford or Cambridge just isn’t worth it. Apparently campus life is ass too
Intelligence also plays a very big part in these students… far from just “hard work”… a dopey emotional mouth breather could work hard too but they will not be in Harvard. This isn’t blue collar construction work. Hard work is not AT ALL the reason that separates these students from average college students…. The best interview I have ever seen was both highly intelligent and entertaining. Even though there were some points I disagreed with, the speakers presented their ideas in a way that invited dialogue, unlike other universities where students often come across as knowing everything. It was truly amazing.
This was a really nice format, not just a bunch of interview clips thrown together. I like how this played out as a story!
Alright. Not a Harvard student (yet, gonna apply next year), but the question about objective truth intrigues me.
The philosopher Immanuel Kant had this idea that whatever we observe in the world, we observe through 'tinted glasses'. We observe reality through our sense organs, which we KNOW can easily be fooled (just think of optical and auditory illusions). So that means we can only observe something as well as our eyes and ears and mind can enable us to. To put this into perspective, even something as fundamental as COLOR doesn't actually exist in reality, only in our minds.
So the question 'does objective truth exist' is redundant, because if we assume that the universe is infinite, then objective truth definitely exists. But there is no reality in which we can ever hope to observe it in its true sense. We will always be hindered by our own minds. We always have to make assumptions in order to reach an answer.
What's even more interesting, though, is that even simple logical truths (eg- 2+2=4), which most people would, without thought, classify as objective reality, are also based on a very huge assumption that OUR logic is UNIVERSAL logic, something for which we have no proof.
TL;DR, Objective truth exists, but there's no possible way for us to ever observe it. Assumptions are always necessary to reach any conclusion.
Take dmt, lsd or mushrooms at enough of a dose to kill your ego and your mind. You will experience first hand the true essence of objective truth.

6:30 The guy literally accepted a logical falacy presentated to him like it was nothing. ''The truth always lies in the middle'' is an argument to moderation, a logical fallacy.
''Argument to moderation (Latin: argumentum ad temperantiam)-also known as false compromise, argument from middle ground, and the golden mean fallacy[1]-is the fallacy that the truth is supposedly always a compromise between two opposing positions.''
All of these people hold opinions that are nuanced, which helps to get closer to the truth in the sense that it is harder to give an answer that could be wrong, but if you acknowledge that all aspects matter, are you even answering the question at all? There is a fine line between nuance and vagueness. Being specific is important too.

Love the questions! My take on the true intelligence question is: I think it is an ability, intelligence comes from our mind. It's our ability to understand patterns, to break them down and use the patterns. I think intelligence sits in contrast to wisdom, as wisdom is intuitive and tied to emotions, while intelligence is tied to cognitive ability. You can be a very intelligent person, yet do stupid things. True intelligence is someone that has a great cognitive ability, but that's also in touch with their heart. They have wisdom and morality. Hope to see more videos like this! I love to play along...

Great video! Loved the questions you asked and the format. It's sad to see that even our most brilliant students are afraid to acknowledge the most simple reality. If you see a man stab another man, and then everybody else in the room claims they didn't see it happen or don't "feel like it happened", it doesn't matter... There is an objective truth in that you SAW the person do it, no matter what anybody else says that is the truth and it is 100% objective. Truth is defined by something determinate and unitary. Reality cannot exist without objective truths, yet every student assumed the question was directed as a metaphorical question about existentialism, religion, or some other esoteric measurement. I think that proves how these kids are being taught to think politically and in partisan ways, as if they're afraid to speak up. Walking on eggshells must get tiring, I can only imagine the pressure from professors and staff.

You're right about truth but you miss the point that we cannot perceive it. If you saw someone stab a person, and everyone else is disagreeing with you, you're probably hallucinating. Everything we perceive as humans is just the brain painting a picture, it isn't objective reality. Everyone opinion you have is subjective, it is impossible to separate personal ideas from physical and mental bias. Reality has objective truths, but humans will only ever be able to get tiny glimpses of that.

Dude, it's not about partisanship. The only universal truth is that there is no universal truth. There are as many truths about the world as there are people. Facts are something else. If you see a stone and it's 5kg then that's a fact. But truth is a philosophical word, it's not about facts

Being intelligent is when you know what you don't know and have the humility and open-mindedness to seek the accurate answers. As for objective truth, it is an unbiased reality, just remember the truth is not always beautiful nor beautiful words the truth.

come to Columbia! There's a whole school called school of general studies that is for "non-traditional" students which is people that have a past other than just coming off of highschool. For example there are actors, in my class theres a special forces veteran and there was also some girl that escaped North Korea. I think that this people are the ones that foster real diversity of thought and is nice to see that unveil in the classroom
Yale has a similar thing, the Eli Whitney Students Program admits students that have been away from school for at least 5 years. I’m at Yale and have a close friend in the Columbia GS program.
These students are so lucky to be able to get in with SAT scores being optional.

Unless you have the same ground rules you can’t have both merit and representation. Specifically, it is not possible to have all kind of students in Harvard, because the educational and economic systems in many countries won’t get people there, despite their capacities; so, even it seems to be merit get into Harvard, it ends up being a circumstantial filter. I’m not saying such a failure in inclusion is caused by the university, or that students there do not deserve to get in, but that there are many variables that influence being admitted. Personally, I consider merit is the main parameter that should allow anyone to belong to a group, and because it is not possible yet to stablish equal conditions and ground rules in all places, there is not going to be representation.
